It’s based on the value not weight

Let me guess, your brother met the person that sent the iPhone online. More that person never accepts video calls right?

1. Ask for the unit responsible
2. As them how they arrived at the duty charged
3. Ask for the HS code
4. Download the West Africa tariff code to see if they are truthful
5 argue you case if they are wrong
6 copy all the DHL international office including the overall CEO, efcc, icpc, customs
7 sometimes there is a collaboration between logistics companies and Customs

8 https://trade.gov.ng/en

The HS code that applies to your device is
8471.30.90.00

YOU NEED TO KNOW THE LAW VERY Well If THIS IS THE HS CODE YOU NEED NOT PAY SHISHI

9. This item is for personal use not commercial

10 don't be in a rush to negotiate with anyone of them. Engage them on the point of facts what the law says concerning your parcel.

BEST WISHES

Can you track the phone first and foremost? If you can track the phone and it shows that custom withheld or something like that, then it is likely with the custom. The more time it stays with them, the less time of getting it because they can steal the package and re pack it to something else.

If not, likely a scam and nothing you can do.
Secondly, is the money paid at their main office with evidence? Or paid online to a certain account? Or someone told you to pay to a personal account there? If yes, it's a scam and they will keep leeching you until you give up and frustrated because you won't seethe first person you paid to again.
Lastly never use all those DHL, FedEx and all, for such transport again, never. They are not meant for such in Nigeria if you don't know your way or have a strong root there.
Even there are many genuine threads and agents here on NL that are very active and you won't even pay up to 100k.
And lastly, hope something is not fishy about the package cos those guys at the custom office knows everything you are hiding if it's a fishy package.

Really disappointing that you have to feel so helpless about your right. After paying for the gadgets, you are still asked to pay so much more just to hold it.

First i think the attempt and paying 800k is poor because bringing out that money back will cost you alot more time. We are always in a hurry to settle and move on as long as we can afford the bride.

Moving forward, just take it up legally. This wont cost you even anything compared to the 800k.. You will spend money but now for the right purposes. In Nigeria, even though you ask for your right you could be asked to shut up. Request for you HS CODE for the shipment and confirm your charges(you will be surprised you owe little).
Send emails attaching all your payment receipts and documents claiming ownership
Use social handles as well. They respond quickly this days to avoid dragging.
Let any officer you are speaking with in the custom know that his name will be listed by your legal team when filling this case. It is only in this process you will get the secret and all behind your country’s importation. Hence moving forward you will never experience this stress again.
Use your legal means immediately !

If you are not ready to handle your problem legally and professional you will always be bullied.
Most of us will rather just beg and pay our way out in everything.

You could have just allowed a custom licensed agent to clear the consignment for your bro with less than 300k. Them go move am directly from the tarmac. But on a serious note, once you declare the neccessary documents to show it not scam there's no need paying such amount to clear the consignment, how much is the said phone and watch worth that warrant such amount for clearance? Haba that's too much. As for "NDLEA HOLD" its normal because 95% of iphones nd watches coming through couriers are not legit hence the hold so them too go chop inside. Just tender the neccessary document including ur passport, pay the normal duty charge then u good to go.
but them go delay the consignment via investigation to ascertain if it scam or not.

Yes. normally we done present everything but my bro done go pay already. The woman wey buy am done even every doc including visa data page on her visit to NG. It's 100% clean

This county just dey systematically inaccurate. It's not something you can fight alone.
From the top to the lowest.

God bless Peter Obi and his intentions towards growth and self-survial.

It's obvious what I have to do. Take everyone out of Nigeria and watch it burn from afar because it's a fight you can't win, bro.

Nice day ahead

Don't comment ANYTHING if you have no progressive input to make.

So my bro's iphone 15 entered Ikeja Int'l Airport and it has been seized by 'Customs' and now 'NDLEA' according to them.

They are asking for N1.4meter as clearance fee.
And i'm confused as why? He even went ahead (before reporting the case to me) to contract another customs officer who doesn't work at the airport and has already paid the sum of 800k yet the phone isn't cleared and the contracted customs officer is asking him to pay #100k extra to top up the money.

I'm mad because I've told him b4 now to always use a 3rd party shipping company when importing device or give to friends who are returning from US or CA to bring in while coming back but him no dey too get patience.

>>> NOTE: He has already sent all documents DHL guys asked for including- purchase receipts and every other evidence to show it is legit purchase.

So here are my questions:

My first question is this: Is this an illegal operation because I am willing to take it up with the so called Customs & DHL guys by reporting this to the Lagos State Task Force office. If yes, how do i go about reporting this issue?

I already suggested he contacts the Human Right Activist, Harrison Gwanishnu on IG for help as it clearly feels like a ripoff!

2ndly, is there a procedure to reporting fraud in public offices that will ensure that you get justice?

3rdly, isn't import duties charged based on the weight of the item imported as against the value of the item?
4thly, what is the safest way of importing phones to avoid such issues as this is the 2nd time this is happening.

I suggested asking the shipping company to send it back to US but he'll have to pay like 600k according to the those crooks at the DHL office..

Omo! I just tire
get an influencer to trend the matter on Twitter DHL with proof.

Sorry bro. We all know your brother did not buy the phone.

The online friend that claims to send him the phone is the one that generated the DHL docs and are milking him dry.

Tell him to count his loss and move on.

It's an old scam but still works.

If the phone is from a ' Client" You must answer to EFCC. on a serious note, all imports must be documented and the appropriate duty paid, you can calculate this yourself. Gone are the days where postoffice and Courier services bypass the Customs, Nowadays you have to pay the relevant duties, so if you are wise go to Computer Village and buy your needs, if it is no gift from a Client.

I'm sorry to hear about the unfortunate situation your brother is facing with his iPhone at Ikeja Int'l Airport. It's understandable that you're frustrated and looking for solutions. Here are some insights and suggestions based on your questions:

Regarding the legality of the operation:
It's essential to determine whether the actions taken by Customs and DHL are legitimate. Reporting this issue to the Lagos State Task Force office is a proactive step. You can visit their office or contact them through official channels to lodge a complaint. Ensure you have all relevant documents and evidence to support your case, such as purchase receipts, correspondence with the shipping company, and any agreements made.

Seeking assistance from Human Rights Activists:
Contacting a Human Rights Activist like Harrison Gwanishnu on IG can be beneficial. They specialize in addressing issues related to rights violations, fraud, and unfair treatment. Provide them with detailed information about the incident and seek their guidance on how to proceed legally and effectively.

Procedure for reporting fraud in public offices:
To ensure you get justice, follow the appropriate procedures for reporting fraud in public offices. This typically involves filing a formal complaint with relevant authorities, providing evidence, and cooperating with investigations. Consider seeking legal advice from a qualified professional familiar with such cases to navigate the process smoothly.

Import duties and safest ways of importing phones:
Import duties are indeed charged based on various factors, including the item's value, type, and country of origin. It's crucial to research and understand the customs regulations and duties applicable to electronic devices like phones before importing them. Using reputable shipping companies with transparent policies and clear fee structures can help avoid issues like the one your brother encountered. Consider exploring alternative shipping methods or consulting experts in international trade for guidance on the safest import practices.

In summary, tackling this issue requires a strategic approach involving legal recourse, advocacy, and informed decision-making. Stay persistent, gather all necessary information and support, and leverage available resources to seek resolution and prevent future incidents.

Look, I’m speaking from experience, a lady came all the way from kaduna to Lagos int’l airport to pick up iPhone 6 then, she approached me and all she has been going through and I told her you have been scam.
