This man is very useless. Although kanji dam alone can serve the whole Nigeria light, but those big men involve in Generators and Solar business has refused the initiatives of us getting constant power supply.

Really? Are sure of what you're saying?

That's a flat lie bro, you don't understand power generation, distribution and consumption.

Even if the entire power stations work at optimum capacity that's not enough for 24 hours light in the whole country, that's even with efficient disco's.

Energy demand 32 tera watt hour.

Energy generated 36 gigawatt hour.

This is 2022 data. Do your fundings as well.

The global problems with power supply in Nigeria I can understand: expansive land mass, rural poverty, etc.
What of the local issues? In my locality they can switch the electricity off and on up to 30 times in an hour. Kilode?

NSNO:

Who told you that a single dam can power an entire nation of over 200 million people?

Believe it or not, it's an open secret. That dam has capacity for 8 gw. Out of the 8 turbine slots built in the dam, Nigeria is only using 4 turbines, with the other 4 slots lying fallow. Even the 4 installed only 2 turbines may be working at any given time 't'. Its nothing but a conspiracy just like the conspiracy that makes sure the refineries don't work.

The existing dams and gas turbines in Nigeria is enough to give the country up to 20 gw but they sabotage and make sure it doesn't work. They even go as far cutting gas pipes to the turbines and leave the stations shut down for months on end, when everyone knows it doesn't take more than a couple of days to repair pipeline leakages. Sabotage of power and fuel, that's all, just to sell imported generators, solar panels, and imported fuel. We are doomed.

But as the experts say

The dam's hydroelectric plant was designed to have a generating capacity of 960MW. Its eventual capacity was lower as only 8 of the planned 12 turbines were installed. The plant currently has a capacity of 760MW

In other words, it cannot reach 8 gw.

We do have an installed capacity of 13 gw according to Nairametrics...the Siemens project would enable the grid transmit 25 gw or 25000 mw when completed.

Be wary of that fake data, my man. It's not real. It's just like the fake nnpc fuel consumption/demand data during subsidy. After subsidy removal it was found to be only a fraction of what they have been putting out. If you want to get a good estimate of the power capacity of Nigeria, list all the dams and gas power stations and sum up their capacities. Its more than 10GW. The power situation in Nigeria is just the same as the fuel situation.

We got 13 gw , but the problem is transmission

Ultimately, the issue is one of the government not letting the power sector set its own prices, and many Nigerians not paying for power at all. Including your government agencies, and the presidency. All that means the sector cannot make a profit that would enable it fix things.

It's difficult to accept that the sector isn't making profits considering the humongous amounts they collect from paying customers every month with very little investment. After the paltry amounts the discos paid to acquire the distribution rights they didn't make any meaningful investment into the sector while they kept harvesting dividends. Where is all that money going?

Thanks for that correction on the actual capacity of kainji dam. But the issue is: what is stopping the utilization of the remaining 4 slots of the kainji dam since the 1970's? What could it be if not intentional sabotage?

Simple. We don't want to pay a cost reflective tarrif.

.
The fact that someone is able to collect billions of naira does not mean he or she does not have needs in trillions of naira.

TO recap, we need something like 6.9 trillion naira in annual investments over 20 years, to fix power. That's even the liberal estimate.

DIscos managed to make 1tr naira last year...highest ever since 2013. That means that they have 5tr in money to make, lol. They also owe something like 2 tr naira in debts to the gas man and woman, and we haven't mentioned the money government owes them.

Also, many discos have customers that do not pay. The latest records we have is from Eko, which had a 88% collection rate recently. That means 12% of their customers do not pay. And that is part of Lagos.

After the paltry amounts the discos paid to acquire the distribution rights they didn't make any meaningful investment into the sector while they kept harvesting dividends. Where is all that money going?

They invested a lot, and even got loans self...but the problem is, they needed more money.

Right now, for discos to make a profit, they need to charge 184 naira per kwh. (according to the NERC boss, who would know, as he is basically in charge of pricing). Until the recent increase for band A people (who make up just 20% of the subscribers nationwide)..we were paying N49-70 PER kwh. Meaning that discos were losing between N110-140 PER KWH sold. And the subsidy needed to make that up is around 3.7 trillion naira, which government has difficulty paying for many reasons.

IN 2019 discos were losing N30 per kwh.

It has been like this for years. That means doscos cannot make return on investment, cannot attract new money investment, cannot pay gencos and tcn, and gencos struggle to pay the gas people, (who have given up in anger and are refusing to sell gas until their debt is paid).

That is why we have bad light.
