funyin: Why not go and commit suicide ignoramus!! cultures should be dynamic and not static, meaning changes are allowed Why shouldn't i call my fathers mate by name? what's the name there for? just for his pay check or National passport? i hope your coming to Nairaland will go a long way in helping you to be a little bit modern |

funyin: I'll keep it simple. This is an ignorant post. you think the only way to show respect is by rolling in the dust? or putting aunty and brother in front of evrybody's name? come on now!!! You know better than that. |

If its not an Igbo custom to bow before elders as Yorubas do, so not bowing is not disrespectful in Igbo culture. Why do Yoruba people take it to be a lack of respect? If a British or American person does not bow to an elder, do you see them as being disrespectful, ofcourse not, its not their culture. Its not a specific Igbo culture to do so and its Igbos who will define what is acceptible or otherwise in their own culture thankyou very much. Why on earth you should think that your own cultural practices should dictate to another tribe is beyond me. How many other tribes in Nigeria bow as the Yorubas do? So does every tribe lack respect? It helps to think before you speak thats what equals ignorance, ignorance about other people's cultural norms. |

funyin:ok, let's forget about d olden days because what naija acts as their olden days are not always true anywayz, like d whole dressin' thingy. As for d second one about talkin' trash after bowin' down, ok, not every tribe does that, my friend. only reason i mentioned it is that u claim they have so much respect. At least when other tribes are talkin' trash about you, u know it's for real Cuz they'd also do it to ur face. what i mentioned was based on an experience actually but igbos do not bow down or whatever so i have never seen such a case. once again, that was an ignorant comment, idk how many times u want me to say it but ."they talk to elderly people d way they like and call their father's mate by name". ok, am confused on that one. If u mean ur father's age-mate without any ties, just ur father's age-mate, what do u expect them to be called, daddy?/wow!!! This is where i have to say that Americans got d upper hand. I noticed that y'all naija people are fond of usin' "aunty, uncle, daddy, etc" on people who are not in anyway related to u. my dear, that's BS!! so long as u're not related to me, u're not my aunty/uncle. A more polite way is to use "Mr/Ms.". simple!!! Infact, i don't see anythin' wrong in callin' ur mother-inlaw by her name, (yes1!) unless she asks u to call her "mummy",fine, other than that, her name is what she shld be called, jare. All this slickness won't lead y'all anywhere. ain't nobody gon whoop ur ass, so just call them their names, jare. |

I personally think it's so idiotic. Every Nigerian I know used to act so surprised at it as if it was the next Trade center incidence. When I eat they look at me wierd like the damn food is not going to get there anyway. I am telling you if not for the God fearing respect my parents instilled I wanted to tell those people how dumb the whole idea was. They would asct baffled when I eat. These same people are eating the food I cooked with my left hand. My parents were telling me how people used to confuse me when I was learning to write. Instead of morons foucsing on important things they would focus on trying to change my writing hand as if they is going to change what words were constructed. I have gotten that silly look from both Igbos and Yorubas alike. However I went to a predominantly Yoruba church when I got here and they would act as it they were stupified by someone using left hand. I always say you can comeout of bush but bush can;t vome out of you. |
