Onitsha Anambra state Nigeria, was home to some of the best Ghananian musicians before the Ghana Must Go rampage in Lagos and environs. In this thread, I will list some of best Ghanaian musical groups who thrived and made hay in Onicha Ado city back in the day.

Dem full Aba and they produced one of the best highlife tracks in the east.

Their songs are still played at events and bars in Aba.

Dem don self remix their songs.

My brother it is true.
Let us go to Youtube and post some of their hits.
Even Orlando Owo used to live in Onitsha.

Our towns used to be most hospitable to even foreign nationals from all over west Africa before SAP.

I guess I need to explain that this thread would debunk some of the lies about Eastern Nigeria being hostile to foreigners.
Before the Ghana must go crisis in Lagos and environ, and SAP all over Nigeria, Onitsha and Aba were like Ghana because Ghanaians thrived there.
They releashed COUNTLESS music albums most of which were in Ghanaian languages, but all of which were HITS.
The funny aspect of the language in music is that Igbo listeners simply converted all the Ashanti, Fante and other Ghanaian sounds into the nearest Igbo words and sang away!

The Ghanaians were AT HOME in Onitsha and Aba.

I'm still trying to figure out how this new site works before posting more music from Youtube.

I grew up in Onitsha and I saw many Yoruba musicians then.
All that changed as Igboland came under more and more marginalization and life became too tough for foreigners and most of them left.
I don't know how things are now there. It used to be a haven of sorts to Ghanaians,Conglese, Cameroonians, and Yoruba musicians.

I left Onitsha just few years bro, I think the only foreigners there apart from easterners are
calabars,
few yorubas mostly cloth designers(tailors),
very small cameronians(infact I only met two, I went to same primary school with,
abokis( shoemakers)and some security men at night and hotels,
nigers and I know this lady from mali married to an onichan,

infact Onitsha is falling everyday even ppl now migrate to asaba than Onitsha.
unlike Onitsha of 80s and 70s my parent told me about where foreigners even far from congo, ghana come for school like DMGS,CKC
I remember my father have a congolese friends even whites self! but my eighteen yrs
inthat city I never seen a congolese talkmore of whites who lives in onitsha apart from chinese
that work on the road construction(tho I always take them same as whites then grin )
oh sorry the only white I saw was the principal of one juniorate school in nkpor around 2004, I think she is
european. probably she left now

To be frank onlytruth, that city is becoming old and congested, ppl now even live in asaba for their bussiness in onitsha. I heard asaba is now hosting nollywood which Onitsha use to host before, who dont know about upper iweka rd!
so sad!! the city i spent eighteen yrs on, I was born there.

Don't worry bros, Onitsha has a spirit that can never die.
We don't have a good Governor in Peter Obi, else the only thing Onitsha needs is tarring of roads. That's all.
Obi can't even do that. Shame on the dude.

Anyway I think that SE marginalization is part of the problem. But we should be happy that we have Asaba too. So, no shaking. cool

Peter Obi is cool but He's scared of borrowing.
I understand his policy, "use what you have to do the job".

I guess what Anambra needs now is Soludo no matter the party He belongs.

You think soludo can do the job? Im suspecting he will only make the state rich but
wont make Onitsha be what it suppose to be in africa. I may be wrong but thats how
I view him. To be frank Obi has fall my hands, I regret even arguing in favor of
him those time he was rigged out.

Come to think of it, imagine musicians like Celestine Ukwu, Goddy Ezike, Sir warrior and Peacocks, all basing in Kumasi Ghana and be playing Igbo highlife there in Igbo, with Ghanaians buying all their songs enthusiastically.
That is the equivalent of what happened in Onitsha! shocked shocked
And people say we, Igbo, are not accommodating? undecided undecided
That is a different level of accommodation.
All is welcome to our region.
The Nigerian system that denied us our right to an international airport, is the reason why Onitsha is dying. sad

We want our town back! Complete with an international airport! angry, else Asaba should start international operations.

Yes, Obi does not understand the ambient possibilities of Onitsha.
Secondly, he is too effeminate!
We need a MASCULINE governor in Anambra state; someone who would stare down any person inside Aso rock and tell him what we need.
All SE governors are too feminine for my liking. They only show muscles when they see fellow Igbo, but wimp out when they get to Abuja.
The idiots don't want to face our oppressors squarely.
God will punish all of them. angry angry

We don't have an international airport in Igboland.
It is killing our economic and wasting our towns! angry

My brother it is not a thing of international Airport or bad Governance as both are not peculiar to Onitsha or Southeast. The effects of the civil war was a systemic robbery of investments from the Southeast which lead to an early equilibrium between population and available resources. We did our best to survive till the 90s when conditions became unbearable and there was massive migration to Europe, Asia and the Americas. Those who could not afford it just left for anywhere with less competition both within Nigeria and other African countries.

Obi could have helped a lot because he was a business man but I don't know what makes him believe that borrowing to develop his State is wrong. What Imo and Enugu State did was basically to tarr roads in already planned cities. Onitsha or Aba are already disorganized and need large fund like that of Rivers and Akwa-Ibom to receive any meaningful face lift.

I don't know about Aba but I know that Onitsha is well planned. Fegge was even planned by the British.
The town needs just tarring of roads.

It seems its been long you were home. Onitsha has grown past Feggae which comprise the older part of town. Everywhere is congested with 3 to 5 storey buildings and little space. In Nigeria, you cannot just demolish peoples houses like that unless you are ready to pay even when they are illegally sited.

But that aside, tarring of roads will not still bring back people to the Southeast as we are still experiencing the impact of long term systemic deprivation of Government presence.

What I meant by Onitsha being planned is that at least 90% of the town is laid out in neighborhood designs/maps.
When you talk about it not being planned, you sounded as if you can just build a house anywhere in Onitsha, which is not true.
There is Fegge which used to be a low density layout before the war, which gradually started to become higher density.
Then there are Awada, Omagba phases 1 and 2, and Nkpor extension which were all high density layouts from the beginning. All of them have neighborhood plans laid out in grid and curvilinear patterns.
The only thing lacking in Onitsha are tarred roads, or rather, re-tarred and maintained roads.
If you tar all Onitsha roads today, the town will run like a well oiled engine.
IMHO Onitsha still needs more densification, around something like 10-20 storey highrise like obtains in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Make me the governor of Anambra state today and I would make that state compete with SEOUL SOUTH KOREA. cool
