Ireland to scrap judges' wigs to save money
Judges in the Irish Republic are to sit in court without wigs in an effort to save money.

The Irish Times has reported that the practice of wearing wigs has been in place in Ireland since the 17th century but will be discontinued after the justice minister signed a new law on Thursday night.

The horsehair headpieces are specially made in London and cost 2,200 euros each.

The minister, Alan Shatter, has also proposed ending any requirement by barristers to wear wigs and gowns.

Following Irish independence in 1921, the new state retained many of the features and traditions of the British legal system.

The Irish Republic has been implementing huge cuts across the public sector in an effort to comply with the requirements of an EU/IMF financial bailout.

djeezy: Last time i cross examined a medical doctor in a law court for administering overdose of anaesthetic to a man that unfortunately led to his demise. The doctor was fretting and finally was held liable for failure of exercising reasonable skill, duty and care. We cross examine engrs,doctors, bankers etc. That's what makes us learned. I read virtually everything. In my university days i even studied mathematics. So Mr Doctor, pray you don't end up in a law court, that day, your real enemity with lawyers will suffice thereafter.

ROSSIKE: The very laws we practice are English laws, so why won't we wear English wigs?

Oga lawyer I knew someone will eventually come with this kind of argument. It's quite different. Doctors wear their scrubs for a purpose... To avoid blood spills on their clothes and for protection. The clothes are usually white or blue because those colors encourage good health... How will u feel if the doc abt to carry out an operation on u is dressed in black or red. Pls what purpose does the wig serve minus boosting ur egos and reminding us that we once slaves to the whites. Anyway I know u be lawyer so u go still talk ur own. I dey wait.
