Rid yourself of subjective illusions. The English you just spat here is not effective communication.

What the poster is trying to do is just comparative analysis. He is trying to know why a practice is being continued when the originator seem to have discontinued it. And you musnt forget that many countries are discontinuing it.

If l may ask, if the British, THE ORIGINATOR, didnt start the practice of donning this blonde hair, wouldnt you have had any other jewel of wisdom, dignity and professional ethic?

The British who started it are withdrawing it, is that denying the profession of wisdom and competence?

Many other professions dont have a specific tin foil hat, does that make them lacking in wisdom?

Other professions are intimated of lawyers? Where did you pull that from? Ur arss?

The wig belongs †☺ us and we counsels appreciate its use. Maybe some time pass it was used by british gentlemen is not the issue. 12 inches!:

Mr 'learned'.... I might not be as 'learned' as u are but in my study of engineering, we had a course called engineering law and law of contracts thot by a lawyer like u so I don't see how ur studying law makes u more learned. Anyway, putting learnedness aside as card carrying member of the hoi polloi it is sacrosant (pun intended) to ask how wig makes u look more learned. The wig is an agent of colonialism. PERIOD. You look like all those 18th century british army. U're a lawyer yes agreed. I will need you in future to help with contract documents but u don't need a wig to do that. American lawyers don't wear wigs. Are they not learned also? So ur learnedness is in ur wig abi?

I am an Engineer also.
Respect urs and respect theirs.

Nothing changes the fact that these black people in the legal systems that wear wigs look dumb. There is no question about that.

Most likely in private whites around the world have to be saying...."Look at these dumb Africans and dumb blacks in the Caribbean. Look how silly the British have them looking long after they are no longer a colony.

The wig signifies grey hair (wisdom and experience with age) which the profession portrays.

We will always use white man's things get a grip.

How about their gowns to be changed to Agbada or whatever?

Because they've stopped wearing it now, so our lawyers too should stop? This follow-follow mentality tire me oh.

And you all have jeans', Polos, suits..use gold wedding rings, nice Italian shoes, prolly wanna ride a British Range Rover or own one...why not get a horse or trek?

Quit deceiving una selves...

How many people go to their work places in their native attires all day, everyday?

In between, if legal practitioners feel this is some kind of burden to them'cause of our climate or whatever reason, then it's their decision....but spare me this colonial mentality b.u.l.ls h!t 'cause of some attire?

The wig signifies on black people in Africa and in the Caribbean....
"the typical African ... is a happy, thriftless, excitable person, lacking in self control, discipline and foresight, naturally courageous, and naturally courteous and polite, full of personal vanity, with little sense of veracity ...in brief , the virtues and defects of this race-type are those of attractive children." -Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, Governor-General of Nigeria (1914–1919)

I humbly disagree that it makes us look like fools.

I am a lawyer, called to the Nigerian Bar 20 years ago, I remember the pride with which I set off to Chancery Lane in London to get fitted for my wig and gown at 20! My colleagues from the USA and other non ceremonial dress countries, while they initially laugh at the pomp of it all, also admit that they do so with a certain sense of envy. There is a certain prestige and identification associated with the wig and gown, when properly made and worn, that makes all the years of studying and abuse worthwhile! I agree that not everyone can afford a wig and gown from Ede & Ravenscroft, but the folks who make them in Nigeria cut corners and produce sub standard end products (as evidenced by the jacked up wig on 1st page).

I will admit, the heat makes it a bit uncomfortable, but I can deal with a bit of discomfort. Besides, if all things were equal in Nigeria, all court rooms and hallways really should be air conditioned, at this point in our post-independence history.

I LOVE my wig and gown, and I humbly submit that I look fabulous in it!

Now these are the words of a bonefide barrister-at-law, calmly stating his case without resorting to cute text-message abbreviations, or defensive responses to any of the scornful comments made here so far on this subject.

As a reminder to the internet's teeming arm-chair attorneys, amid whose ranks I number, tolerance for the sartorial preference of Nigerian law practitioners is a fundamental hallmark of democracy, that societal ideal to which all enlightend persons should aspire, so live and let live, ad-infinitum, if you will excuse my Latin.

Info-lpf, one day you will represent my interests in the court of law, if you have not already done so ha ha.

You're a thoughtless moro.n to keep quoting that racist garbage from a semi-literate drunkard like Lugard. It is your racial inferiority complex that makes you think his words mean anything but the ignorant garbage spewed by the sort of drunken, unschooled louts that we see everyday here on the streets of London.

Nobody expects lawyers like you, steeped in colonial buffoonery, to even gather your thoughts enough to question the nature of your subservience, in wearing wigs symbolizing white mens' hair.

We pray an African DICTATOR or a conscious African parliament, showing a sense of African independence and dignity, will arise one day to forcefully yank that colonialist rubbish off your thoughtless little heads and spare us further embarrassment.

Re: When Will Nigerian Lawyers Stop Wearing Wigs, Looking Like Fools To The World? by dayorx(m): 3:17pm On May 13, 2012
some people on this forum need to get enlightened, wearing of the wig and gown is reserved only for the courts and no place else. if u r in a laweyers' office he will be clad in his suit. thus u may never see a lawyer wear the attire because not all matters end in court.
and a wig is not made with human hair like some people have claimed it is made with horse hair and a genuine wig from ede&ravenscroft is fantastic and lasts a life time.
even if everyone all nigerians protest on the streets lawyers would not dump the attire..

The suit and tie are only clothes which anyone can wear or nor wear. But it borders on the utmost stupidity to wear the HAIR of white men to symbolize justice and law among Africans. Get that into your dummb, thick, thoughtless and stupi.d skull. And no, the dictator will only have to DECREE that you yank off your stupi.d white man hair, for it to become the law of the land, and when you break that African law by donning that crap, you go straight to JAIL. i always laugh at idiots who think lacing their comments with insults will give it more depth.. so miss me with that bullsh1t. i dont understant people like u, u want to keep the colonialist suit and tie, but dont want his gown and wig? what sense does that make? it seems ur problem is the color of the hair, so will it make u happy if it dyed black?

and correct me if im wrong, is it only so-called white people who have white/grey hair? as a black man, as u grow older, ur hair becomes grey and white-ish. and that grey hair signifies wisdom in african tradition. and from what i got from a lawyer who posted on the topic, that is also what the grey signifies.

how can u come here and insult an institution that u have to rely on for equity and justice with such cruel words and expect anybody to take u seriously?

btw rossik, idi0ts like u come here gloating with pictures of mall revolution in nigeria but inside that mall all products sold including the food are from the same colonialist u hate so much. can i go inside that mall and buy akara and akamu for breakfast? no. okay, what of a joint where they sell yam and owo for lunch? no. any nkwobi joint in the mall for evening relaxation? hell nah!! instead the mall would be littered with fast food joints with some crappy chinese restaurant and u are happy and think it is a thing of pride. but when a lawyer wear his wig straight from court into ur mall and u see him eating some weird azz chinese food with chop sticks, instead of you to worry about what he is eating and putting into his stomach, na the wig wey dey e head go be ur concern. grin set ur priority straight my dear. do.

If you come here glorifying colonialist rubbish then BE PREPARED for insults. We are Africans. We are not white people.

i dont understant people like u, u want to keep the colonialist suit and tie, but dont want his gown and hair?

You can't even see how ignorant and stu.pid you sound. The suit and tie are CLOTHES. You can wear ANY clothes you want from any part of the world. There is NOTHING wrong with that. The Chinese man, Japanese man, Indians all wear suit and tie, jeans and tshirt. But do you see them wearing white man's hair in their courts??

The institution of Justice is a very different thing, with white man's hair amounting to a uniform (in our pathetic case) symbolizing that institution. WE REJECT THAT. African lawmaking cannot have white man's hair as its uniform. ONE DAY THAT WILL BE WIPED OUT FROM OUR SOCIETIES. AND THE SOONER IT COMES, THE BETTER.

and correct me if im wrong, is it only so-called white people who have white/grey hair? as a black man, as u grow older, ur hair becomes grey and white-ish.

You must think you're talking to idio.ts. Even a goat knows that that rubbish you wear on your head has nothing to do with African hair or traditions, and EVERYTHING to do with the hair of white colonizers and their European legal traditions.

how can u come here and insult an institution that u have to rely on for equity and justice with such cruel words and expect anybody to take u seriously?

It is PRECISELY because we rely on that institution for our laws that we do not wish it defined or symbolized by white men's hair. If you have no dignity and sense of self-worth in you, WE DO.

gani is a man every nigerian no matter where they are from regard as great, but a nonentity like u described him as someone with a "thoughtless little head"? how have u contributed to the dignity of nigerians apart from ur egocentric posts in nairaland?

It makes no difference if you post MANDELA HIMSELF with a white man's hair wig. Gani and others are from the colonial generation who were raised to believe the white man was God.

WE are of the INDEPENDENCE generation. WE BELIEVE we have NO REASON to don white men's hair to symbolize our justice system. Africans invented the very concept of laws, thousands of years before white men existed. We will NOT live indefinitely as colonial subjects and objects of ridicule, shamelessly donning white mens' hair as a uniform for our legal system. THAT WILL SURELY COME TO AN END SOON, AND THE SOONER THE BETTER.

Actually in some malls you will find Mr Biggs and Tantalizers, who sell all sorts of Nigerian food, from moi moi and beans to eba and egusi. SO YOU ARE WRONG. The Japanese and Chinese have malls all over their countries. But you will never see them don a white man's hair in their courts of justice. Lesson: Modernity does not equate to stupidity and slave mentality.

If we must wear a legal uniform, why can we not invent or design some garb or even hairpiece made from our rich cultural heritage to symbolize our legal system??

I mean, it's incredible that we jettison our rich heritage to go looking for white man's hair to put on, here in Africa!

Absolutely ludicrous.

Our great grandchildren in a future mentally liberated Africa, will look back at these pictures with real embarrassment.
