A prospective law or history student at best requires knowledge of basic statistics which they will eventually apply in the area of research data collection and data analysis, and not all those irrelevant topics like geometry, trig and other irrelavant topics that he or she will never make reference to.

No need debating with u since u cannot see any difference between statistics and mathematics. I thought u knew. And also everything is wrong with embedding statistics inside mathematics. Statistics is a distinct field from mathematics, and it is basic stats that most arts & social science courses require and and not general mathematics. It should stand on its own like it used to be in the past in WAEC just like mathematics.

This is such a poor excuse for the rot in the educational system. Haven't people written and passed Maths and English in the past, why is this a problem now. As someone pointed out, the standard of learning has dropped drastically. Its so bad that even University graduates cannot speak or write correctly. All this mediocrity needs to stop, if not Nigeria will never be a main contender in the international market in terms of knowledge base and practical applications that translate to the ability to provide much needed services.

For i can say hte main cause of mass fairur in Nigeria is the serious problem facing the Nigeria educational sector, in the sence that in some schools there will be no teaching facilities,unconducive environment ,lack of conduct, imagine a situetion where a student will be coming to school by 10am and will go unpunished. Then coming to the side of some students beheviour toward maths and english, for me i may suggest that most student dont want to read atall on their own so that when the is teaching in the class it will be a revision to them but the most fascinating point of it is that they dont understand

I didn't say there was no difference, I said there was no need at the secondary school level for statistics to be a separate course from mathematics when the concepts can be taught in mathematics. For some reason, you still don't seem to see that the secondary school level is more for general knowledge than for specialized knowledge. Especially in these modern times when there is a lot more to learn and many more courses in the school day.

It's only a suggestion for it to be re-introduced back so that those that want to go in for some arts and social science courses can go in with statistics in lieu of general maths. You can also suggest they make physics compulsory 4 arts students to also sharpen their thinking and reasoning abilities.

And I say there is no reason to separate them because all people need some basic knowledge of Mathematics. I also don't see basic Mathematics as being so rigorous that they should be limited to those in the sciences.

why would I? Physics is a different subject from Mathematics.

I recently found out that the nursery song we used to sing as sandalili sandalili is actually standard living standard living... This for me is just an attestation to the fact that our educational problems are very very foundational. They start not even from primary school but from nursery school. If you teach a child the wrong basics, he can only build on it. We need to go to the very basics of learning like i said before if things are going to change. It is not when students write WAEC that they don't suddenly know what they are doing, it started way before they got into secondary school.
