ishmael: You're too fake. You don't even know what trig or geometry is. Ok tell us one area where the law or history student applies trig or geometry in law or in history; i'm waiting. A prospective law or history student at best requires knowledge of basic statistics which they will eventually apply in the area of research data collection and data analysis, and not all those irrelevant topics like geometry, trig and other irrelavant topics that he or she will never make reference to.

You must be missing some doses of your medication.
What part of having a basic knowledge didn't you understand? Anyway, you can take a look at this book. You can read it online for free or download it to help you understand that everyone to some extent needs some basic knowledge of these principles.
Then take a look at this article. It is more on geography but as we know, lawyers and historians can be involved in understanding geography.
Note that statistics hasn't been remove, it is still in the Mathematics curriculum.

No need debating with u since u cannot see any difference between statistics and mathematics. I thought u knew. And also everything is wrong with embedding statistics inside mathematics. Statistics is a distinct field from mathematics, and it is basic stats that most arts & social science courses require and and not general mathematics. It should stand on its own like it used to be in the past in WAEC just like mathematics.

God bless you. Very well stated

This is such a poor excuse for the rot in the educational system. Haven't people written and passed Maths and English in the past, why is this a problem now. As someone pointed out, the standard of learning has dropped drastically. Its so bad that even University graduates cannot speak or write correctly. We make such flimsy excuses as to why that is the case e.g. English is not my first language. Agreed. But if you spend your whole life speaking a particular language, receiving educational training in the said language, and after 21 years you cannot communicate properly or formally in that language, what does that say about the person? It is either the person was negligent of his/her studies, or the educational system failed that person.

I think that in Nigeria, it is a little bit of both. Students do not pay attention to their studies anymore, and the educational system is steadily declining. That is why an educator can come out in public and make such stupid statements. Educators need to sit up and think about how they can improve the system. All this mediocrity needs to stop, if not Nigeria will never be a main contender in the international market in terms of knowledge base and practical applications that translate to the ability to provide much needed services.

For i can say hte main cause of mass fairur in Nigeria is the serious problem facing the Nigeria educational sector, in the sence that in some schools there will be no teaching facilities, unconducive environment ,lack of conduct, imagine a situetion where a student will be coming to school by 10am and will go unpunished. Then coming to the side of some students beheviour toward maths and english, for me i may suggest that most student dont want to read atall on their own so that when the is teaching in the class it will be a revision to them but the most fascinating point of it is that they dont understand

I didn't say there was no difference, I said there was no need at the secondary school level for statistics to be a separate course from mathematics when the concepts can be taught in mathematics. For some reason, you still don't seem to see that the secondary school level is more for general knowledge than for specialized knowledge. Especially in these modern times when there is a lot more to learn and many more courses in the school day.

It was offered as a subject in the past. It's only a suggestion for it to be re-introduced back so that those that want to go in for some arts and social science courses can go in with statistics in lieu of general maths. I see no good reason why arts students should do the same rigorous maths as their science counterparts. I rest my case bro.

You can also suggest they make physics compulsory 4 arts students to also sharpen their thinking and reasoning abilities.

And I say there is no reason to separate them because all people need some basic knowledge of Mathematics. I also don't see basic Mathematics as being so rigorous that they should be limited to those in the sciences.

I recently found out that the nursery song we used to sing as sandalili sandalili is actually standard living standard living... This for me is just an attestation to the fact that our educational problems are very very foundational. They start not even from primary school but from nursery school. If you teach a child the wrong basics, he can only build on it. We need to go to the very basics of learning like i said before if things are going to change. It is not when students write WAEC that they don't suddenly know what they are doing, it started way before they got into secondary school.
