From 1972 until his death Moshood Abiola had been conferred with 197 traditional titles by 68 different communities in Nigeria, in response to the fact that his financial assistance resulted in the construction of 63 secondary schools, 121 mosques and churches, 41 libraries, 21 water projects in 24 states of Nigeria, and was grand patron to 149 societies or associations in Nigeria. In this way Abiola reached out and won admiration across the multifarious ethnic and religious divides in Nigeria. In addition to his work in Nigeria, Moshood Abiola was a dedicated supporter of the Southern African Liberation movements from the 1970s and he sponsored the campaign to win reparations for slavery and colonialism in Africa and the diaspora. Chief Abiola, personally rallied every African head of state, and every head of state in the black diaspora to ensure that Africans would speak with one voice on the issues.

I have personally met a man who championed the sinking of those Bibles on the sponsorship of Abiola/IBB. He was a one time Jihadist in the name of their allah. A prominent grand-son of Late Uthman Dan Fodio. He is now a borne-again Christian and goes by the name Blessed Usman. He confessed to the crime at a congregation and gave a graphic account of what happened and how he was arrested by the Lord when on a mission to kill the late Idahosa in Kano.

So it is true that Abiola paid for the destruction of Holy Bibles on the high sea.

Poverty and tribalism by brother. It seems liek these Igbo people are born with bigotry both ethnic and religious.

How can a man that sunk Bibles be voted for by Christians and Muslims alike. I am a Muslim and if Abiola did that I would never had supported him, not to talk of Christians.

On the surface the story looks unbelievable since MKO was not a naval officer. However, he could have ordered the bibles with a plan to destroy them in a dramtic fashion and win the hearts and minds of fellow muslim religious fanatics. The story is more about the intolerance of Islam, not just the action of MKO.
While christians preach peace, turning the other cheeck as often as possible, not minding if their church, holy book and even lives are destroyed, the muslims are on a rampage. While Iran and other fanatic islamic groups officially destroy, ban, and violate the bible, christians really don't care. But start any false rumor about someone disrespecting koran tomorrow, you'll have a riot of islamic religious hooligans, that's Islam vs Christianity for you.

Man is held accountable for his actions and inactions through the immutable laws of nature, whether he wills it or not. And so, if a man wakes up and gives to his dog the names of all the gods at once, why should the worshippers at the shrine of those gods lose sleep on the development? At a time in history, the late M.K.O. Abiola ordered the sinking of three million copies of the Bible in the high sea. The container load of the holy book was bound for Nigeria when he used his influence to seize and destroy them. The Christian world did not bat an eyelid. When on August 22, 2011 the Iranian authorities intercepted six thousand five hundred copies of the New Testament Bible and burnt three hundred of them “in order not to deviate [their] youth”, the Papacy did not raise eyebrows and the Christian community did not flare up.

Much of the money he supposedly donated to many UNVERIFIED churches and mosques to date, was money that was meant to go to the building of the future of Nigerians to begin with.

The many ABRACADABRA-ed a $20 million dollar fund(by today's money that is about $500 million dollars) that was meant to be used to build world standard IT and communication infrastructure for Nigeria and Africa.

the journalists claims in the article don't really prove that it's true. I doub't he will have had the authority to sink ships since someone will have been shipping those bibles (at a very high cost) to make some sort of profit. We should at least know where the reported ships are or have heard the owner of the ships complain?

naptu2: An entirely false story. Chief MKO Abiola worked hard to promote religious tolerance in Nigeria. He was proud of the fact that he was educated at a missionary school (Baptist Boys High School) and would often quote from the Bible, the Quoran and proverbs in his speeches. He donated a lot of money to churches and mosques. While in detention in Abuja, he requested for and was given a Bible, a Quoran and sheets of paper to write on.

People should remember that Chief Abiola was involved in partisan politics in the early 1980s and early 1990s. When you get involved in partisan politics in Nigeria, your opponents would spread rumours/negative stories about you in order to discredit you (the Babangida and Abacha regimes actively spread propaganda against him).

Thank you, my brother. I am aware of Abiola's request for a bible when he was in prison. Mustapher said so himself.

In propoganda, they believe that the bigger the lie, the more the public will buy it. Abacha spread this stories when he imprisoned Abiola so as to divide Nigerian's support for him. The lie has been repeated so often that apparently even a businessday reporter believed it. That publication had better quietly remove that story before Abiola's family sees it and sues for billions.

He never did that. In fact he did the opposite, the took away the futures of millions of Nigerians. Abiola is the reason why in the 21st century, Nigeria's IT infrastructure is still struggling to catch up with countries like india, Egypt etc.

Abiola was vice president of ITT Africa and EMEA and CEO/Chairman of ITT Nigeria between 1972 and 1988. ITT was an American conglomerate that had a global presence.

How can the provision telephone exchanges and lines in the 1970s be the main reason for the failure of IT infrastructure in Nigeria?
ITT did provide much of the backbone of NITEL; the issue with ITT wasn’t what it delivered but the cost at which it was delivered.

The technology that was available in the 70s and early 80s does not, in anyway, form the backbone of what is required for today’s IT infrastructure. For instance, all nations have the Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) which was used for early connectivity to the Internet. Since then, many nations have spent considerable sums to provide broadband and fibre optics which are considered essential in today’s IT infrastructure. So the questions are:

Did Nigeria contract ITT to provide Broadband and Fibre optics in the 70s (we know they were not available then)?

Why has Nigeria not expended the necessary costs to provide MODERN IT infrastructure? It is moronic to blame this on ITT considering that most Nigerians who use computer modems use the POTS cables that were laid by ITT in the 70s.

Attempting to blame an INDIVIDUAL who worked for a private foreign conglomerate for the non-existence of services that were not only not contracted but also not available at the time it was contracted to provide other services is an effort in futility. This point is further buttressed by the fact that a majority of Nigerians actually rely on the services provided by ITT over 30 years ago to access the internet in their homes if using POTS.
If I am mistaken about your definition of IT infrastructure, please proceed to educate me.

Going by your constant negative posts about the man, it is obvious you have an issue with his legacy. That is fine but no need to spread lies or inaccuracies.

When on February 21, 2012 some copies of the Quran and other religious materials were removed from a detainee facility at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan for disposal, they were inadvertently burnt by United States soldiers.

The Qurans were included for disposal because they had “extremist inscriptions” on them, which aroused the fear that they were being used to fertilize extremist communications. John Allen, commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force, said that the decision to burn them was not because they were religious materials, nor because it had to do with the faith of Islam. He said it was done in error and when they discovered the documents, they immediately stopped and intervened. This singular action sparked off violence of immense magnitude in Afghanistan. President Obama had apologized to Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, promising to hold his subjects accountable – an apology that the rebels dismissed as “mere slogans” and some Americans saw as unnecessary.

In 1988 when the British novelist, Ahmed Salman Rushdie, published The Satanic Verses (a collection of some verses in the Quran alleged to allow intercessory prayers to be made to three Meccan goddesses), Muslims said it made a mockery of their religion which resulted in fatwa (Islamic death sentence) by the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini on February 14, 1989. Then, in July 1991, Hitoshi Igarashi was stabbed to death for translating the book into Japanese.

In 2004, Theo Van Gogh released his documentary film, “Submission”, which documented violence against women in the Muslim world. This cost him his life as Mohammed Bouyeri, an Islamic extremist, murdered him in broad daylight. And even as you read this, a Dutch member of parliament, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who worked with Van Gogh to produce the film, is under twenty-four-hour protection. Bouyeri, the murderer, was convicted to a life sentence without parole. In a courtroom during his trial, Mohammed Bouyeri told his mother that he felt no sympathy for her because she was an unbeliever.

In 2006, a Danish cartoonist, Kurt Westergaard, published a cartoon of Mohammed wearing a bomb. A Somalian fundamentalist broke into his house nearly four years after the publication with the intent to murder him but for the timely intervention of the police. The cartoon was the most controversial of the twelve Jyllands-Posten cartoons of the time.

In 2007 at Unity High School in Sudan, Gillian Gibbons, an English schoolteacher, was arrested, humiliated, prosecuted, convicted, imprisoned, and later deported. And what was her offence? “Blasphemy!” The children in her class named a teddy bear Mohammed. And so, Sara Khawad, an office assistant, filed the complaint and was a key witness in the prosecution. Not even the testimony of one of the school children named Mohammed that the teddy bear was named after him could save the situation.

The catalogue is endless. Everywhere and at all times, the Muslim world is inflamed. In Nigeria, the story is not different. The country had at various times experienced and still experiences carnage of enormous magnitude occasioned by the abuse of the sacred name of the Almighty. Whoever doubts that Prophet Mohammed is an envoy of God cannot be helped. Someday, he will have this truth forced upon him – and perhaps, with considerable pressure too.

But man has shaped, reshaped and twisted divine messages to suit his purpose and convenience, dimming the purity and distorting what meaning that ever was in the “word” to satisfy his ego. This warped view of religion is not only incompatible with the moral code but also contradicts the laws of evidence.

Much as we cannot reduce the import of burning a sacred book, we cannot also rationalize killings in the name of God. When was it ever heard that it is man’s duty to fight for God? When was it man’s place to accept or reject apologies for crimes committed against the Almighty? If we claim to be true servants of God, it must be through a demonstration of true humanity and not otherwise. But at these times, this particular attitude of mankind, of playing contrived roles of divinity, is the most astonishing thing in our time.

These many deaths and persecutions brought about in the name of Him who is life and peace, to say the least, robs man of his dignity. A rational thinking person would easily see through the falsehood and sham of self-centred truth and must recognize the only truth which is in God and which is God. Intolerance to religious practices is unjustifiable and pictures man’s image worse than he is. At the root of all authentic religious beliefs and practices, love is fundamental – the greatest of all virtues. It conquers all and holds the key to the salvation of man both in this life and in the hereafter. It is man’s duty to pursue peace at all costs and make the world a better place irrespective of creed.

I dont know age of most people on this thread but anyone above 30 yrs can 70% believe he sank a ship of bible, few get into country which was sold for 5 naira and I was able to buy it then (1992) and read it from A to Z. The bible is meant to be free if not sank, but little that get to country by those that were able to get it by their own way was sold, and you can clearly see it has been dried up and some has never been to water.

Anyone who believes that an individual sunk a ship should please provide the following

1. Name of vessel
2. Year it was sunk
3. In what waters it was sunk
4. What other cargoes was the said vessel carrying?
5. Was that the only vessel that was shipping Bibles?
6. How many other vessels carrying Bibles were sunk?

Did the sinking of Bibles in the open seas stop Bibles being sent or reprinted in Nigeria?
What other actions did Abiola take to stop Bibles being distributed in Nigeria?

Nigerians and illogical rumours. :-

What was a ship load of bibles meant for?
Did he sink the ship himself or ordered for it to be sunk?
Were all the crew and the captain ordered to disembark or was the ship sunk along with them?
Did this action reduce the number of people reading the bible now?
Are we running short of bibles ?

Please I need the name of the vessel, the date it left its port, the date it was sunk, the crew, and the vessel's leaving port and destination. Many a times Nigerians have been lied to, and most of us are so gullible to take the lies hook line and sinker. Our huge population is a problem. If 1% of every nation is gullible, then we have 15 million gullible Nigerians. About 30 of them are on this thread so far.
