Katsumoto:
The technology that was available in the 70s and early 80s does not, in anyway, form the backbone of what is required for today’s IT infrastructure. For instance, all nations have the Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) which was used for early connectivity to the Internet. Since then, many nations have spent considerable sums to provide broadband and fibre optics which are considered essential in today’s IT infrastructure. So the questions are:
Correction, much of the technology used today, in much of the advanced world, was developed and fashioned in the 60's and 70s. Broadband technologies and fibre optics are built ON old technologies . . .the old did not have to be pulled out for the implementation of the new. Much of the fibre optic networks we work with today where installed in the 70s/80s, about the same period ITT was busy in Nigeria.
Katsumoto:
Did Nigeria contract ITT to provide Broadband and Fibre optics in the 70s (we know they were not available then)?

Why has Nigeria not expended the necessary costs to provide MODERN IT infrastructure? It is moronic to blame this on ITT considering that most Nigerians who use computer modems use the POTS cables that were laid by ITT in the 70s.
ITT did get a contract to provide fibre optics in West Africa back in the 70's/80's. The contract did not necessarily have to come from Nigeria for it to affect Nigerians.

What is moronic is to suggest that ITT executives should not be blamed for the failures that helped bring us where we are today.
Katsumoto:
Attempting to blame an INDIVIDUAL who worked for a private foreign conglomerate for the non-existence of services that were not only not contracted but also not available at the time it was contracted to provide other services is an effort in futility. This point is further buttressed by the fact that a majority of Nigerians actually rely on the services provided by ITT over 30 years ago to access the internet in their homes if using POTS.
If I am mistaken about your definition of IT infrastructure, please proceed to educate me.

Going by your constant negative posts about the man, it is obvious you have an issue with his legacy. That is fine but no need to spread lies or inaccuracies.

Correction : There was a contract, ITT failed to deliver on it. The individual in question was one of those in charge, and hence also responsible. This individual happened to have been an executive at the very company that helped rob millions of Nigerians of a chance at a better future. This individual happen to have amassed much of the wealth he ever claimed while he worked as an executive with ITT bilking millions out of the Nigerian people.

You bet I do have a problem with his legacy, and I am sure that is plain to see. Ofcourse I have an issue with his legacy. I have an issue with anyone who feels it is OK to rob the poor people so they can live better . . . I have an issue with people who pee down my back and tell me it is raining. I have an issue with all thieves, especially those who trample on the futures of millions of people just because they can.

You are no Robin hood stealing from the poor and then giving back crumbs to the same poor. You are no different from the IBB's, the Obasanjos, etc. Who steal in the open from the people and get away with it. I don't care who your mama or papa be. You be thief, you be theif!

Stop spreading lies and ignorance. Fibre optics was developed in the 70s and it only became a viable option in the late 80s, well after ITT was contracted to provide POTS. No nation was installing Fibre optics commercially in the 70s. Fibre optics became widely available in MOST DEVELOPED nations in the 2000s. In fact many providers are still laying fibre optics cables today.

Please tell us who contracted ITT to provide Fibre optics in the 70s or any other decade to West Africa? Was it ECOWAS or WAFU?

You are correct in that technology usually builds on previous technology but wrong in putting the blame on ITT. ITT provided POTS which it was contracted to do. The failure to improve on POTS by providing Broadband has nothing to do with ITT but a systemic decay in Nigeria.

Koboj, Please provide more information on this fibre optics contract in the 70s.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, telephone companies began to use fibers extensively to rebuild their communications infrastructure.

Sprint was founded on the first nationwide, 100 percent digital, fiber-optic network in the mid-1980s.

The erbium-doped fiber amplifier, which reduced the cost of long-distance fiber systems by eliminating the need for optical-electrical-optical repeaters, was invented in 1986 by David Payne of the University of Southampton and Emmanuel Desurvire at Bell Labratories. Based on Desurvire's optimized laser amplification technology, the first transatlantic telephone cable went into operation in 1988.

Who gave ITT the contract to provide Fibre optics in the 70s? shocked shocked shocked

Did you read what you posted??/

Sprint, an American company, built the first 100% fibre optic network in the mid-80s. But you were expecting ITT to have built a fibre optic network in the 70s in Africa, much earlier than it became commecially viable to build?

While the story may seem unbelievable, I don't think that is enough to deem it untrue. After all this is Nigeria, Land where most everything does not make sense at the end of the day.

Regardless of your personal opinion of whether Christians read or do not read the Bible in the country, the main is the story has nothing to do with that.

2Mekus: I have personally met a man who championed the sinking of those Bibles on the sponsorship of Abiola/IBB. He was a one time Jihadist in the name of their allah. A prominent grand-son of Late Uthman Dan Fodio. He is now a borne-again Christian and goes by the name Blessed Usman. He confessed to the crime at a congregation and gave a graphic account of what happened and how he was arrested by the Lord when on a mission to kill the late Idahosa in Kano.

So it is true that Abiola paid for the destruction of Holy Bibles on the high sea.

You met the Grandson of Uthman Dan Fodio abi?

Abeg, I just sent you a friend request, so please hurry and accept cus I'd like for us to be cool so I can get to use this Time Machine of yours. I've been meaning to meet King Arthur myself. . . . . .

Abiola died in prison, during the Abacha years. Before it all went down, he was quite chummy with some of those same guys. There was hardly a month that Abiola was not on TV, or in the news, celebrating one thing or another with some of the elite, and some of those military buffoons, back in those days.

Can't you all see the despiration of all this PDP people.... NIGERIANS, MAKE WE CONTINUE TO THE SIT DOWN DEY WATCH ASIF WE BE FURNITURE. THIS PEOPLE ARE READY TO CRASH THIS COUNTRY AT ALL COURSE because OF GREED, THEY DONT CARE ABOUT US. THE UNITED STATE WILL CONTINUE TO BACK PDP FROM BEHIND (BECAUSE THEIR AIM IS THE REDUCE THE WORLD POPULATION TO 500 MILLION).

THE COLONIAL MASTERS ( BOTH THE EUROPEAN CHRISTIANS AND ARAB MUSLIMS ) USED THIS STRATEGY TO INVADE AFRICA LONG TIME AGO, THEY PRETENDED TO COME IN PEACE, WEREAS THEY WERE INSEARCH OF TREASURE, GETTING HERE, THEY REALIZED OUR CULTURE WAS A TREAT TO THEM, THEY WORSHIP THE SUN, MOON & STARS WHILE WE AFRICANS HAVE DIRECT INTELLECTUAL LINK WITH GOD... THEY CAME IN WITH WAR, DIVIDE THE PEOPLE OF THE LAND, MAKE THEM SEE EACH OTHER AS ENEMIES, MAKES THEM FIGHT EACH OTHER BY PROVIDING BOTH GROUPS WITH WEAPON, REMOVE THEIR CULTURE ( HERITAGE ) FROM THEM AND REPLACE IT WITH THEIR OWN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. AFTER FEW YEARS, THIS MAKES EVERY CITIZEN OF THE LAND MENTALLY ENSLAVED TO THEM.

HAVE YOU EVER ASKED YOURSELF ( HOW COME BEFORE THE ARABS AND EUROPEANS CAME TO AFRICA, THERE WAS NO WARS, FARMING, DISUNITY, ARGUMENT OF OUR BELIEVES IN GOD ) , THEY CLEANED UP OUR HISTORY, THEY BROUGHT IN THIS IDEA ANF GAVE US THIS NEW WORLD ORDER CULTURE.

DO YOU KNOW THAT ALL THE SAINTS IN THE BIBLE WERE BLACKS, DID YOU KNOW THAT THE REAL HEBREWS ARE WE BLACK. DO YOU KNOW THE MEANING OF AFRICA; HAVE YOU ASKED YOURSELF WHY OUR NAMES HAS DEVINE MEANING AND THE WHITE MAN'S NAME DON'T.... COMMON MEHN...... OPEN YOUR FUKIN EYES AND SEE.... THE BIBLE SAYS MY PEOPLE DIE OUT OF LACK OF KNOWLEDE.

THIS OUR POLITICIANS THINK THEY ARE IN CONTROL OF NIGERIA , WHEREAS THE ARABS AND EUROPEANS ARE PLAYING AFRICANS LIKE A CHESS GAME LOL......

AM LIFTING THIS FROM HIS WKI PAGE.....Philanthropy

Moshood Abiola sprang to national and international prominence as a result of his philanthropic activities. The Congressional Black Caucus of the United States of America issued the following tribute to Moshood Abiola:
Because of this man, there is both cause for hope and certainty that the agony and protests of those who suffer injustice shall give way to peace and human dignity. The children of the world shall know the great work of this extraordinary leadeand his fervenmission to right wrong, to do justice, and to serve mankind. The enemies which imperil the future of generations to come: poverty, ignorance, disease, hunger, and racism have each seen effects of the valiant work of Chief Abiola. Through him and others like him, never again will freedom rest in the domain of the few. We, the members of the Congressional Black Caucus salute him this day as a hero in the global pursuit to preserve the history and the legacy of the African diaspora.

From 1972 until his death Moshood Abiola had been conferred with 197 traditional titles by 68 different communities in Nigeria, in response to the fact that his financial assistance resulted in the construction of 63 secondary schools, 121 mosques and churches, 41 libraries, 21 water projects in 24 states of Nigeria, and was grand patron to 149 societies or associations in Nigeria. In this way Abiola reached out and won admiration across the multifarious ethnic and religious divides in Nigeria. In addition to his work in Nigeria, Moshood Abiola was a dedicated supporter of the Southern African Liberation movements from the 1970s and he sponsored the campaign to win reparations for slavery and colonialism in Africa and the diaspora. Chief Abiola, personally rallied every African head of state, and every head of state in the black diaspora to ensure that Africans would speak with one voice on the issues.[7]

godello: Chief M.K.O Abiola, some will say is a philantropist, a politician, a business mugul etc. Who is highly celebrated due to his past antecedents. BUT, i was told by different people that this man was in a verge of islamizing Nigeria, and to buttress this fact he sunk a ship load of BIBLES making its way to Nigeria. IS THIS REALLY TRUE ?
the story is the same as those stories about Buhari Islamising Nigeria. The Christian folks despite the claim of being super educated are the most vulnrable & susceptible to these baseless stories.
