Ninilowo:
I wonder o.

brownlord:

i don tire my broder, which kind thread be this again

Abbey2sam: Why da Bleep will dis make the front page...who are the fucking moderators dat put dis shit on da front page when there are important topics to discuss...if you like hid my post....if he tink dat d corn is too expensive,he should try farming or beta still go and hawk corn...let me see if he sell it ten naira

ifeware: why is this a front page discussion.u guys are lossing it by the day. Rubbish!instead of posting stories of great importance u post trash.

How is this trash? State the reasons why you think this enquiry or observation by the poster should not be made known to as many people as possible.

Why not move on if you have nothing to learn from the thread instead of disparaging it? It is becoming customary for people, who don't have alternatives, to condemn some topics that appear on whatever page.

There are many things we should be asking why 4 eg
why should a cup of garri = #30
why should a cup of rice = 350
why should a pot of soup(just for 2) = #2000
why should a litter of fuel cost = a times #110
why should a 2 bedroom flat = 15k a month
why should an average worker's earnings = #70000

My dear if we keep asking our why, for sure we will keep getting the same answer "error in the countries processing system please format hard disk"

trooperz: @Alpha2k Sir,
To answer your question correctly, the following ingredients must be present.
1. An Economist with the understanding of 20th century agrarian economic policies and the evolution of agriculture after the industrial revolution.
2.Agro- Commodity trader: CBOT Corn, Wheat, Lean Hogs, Cows. Etc. Demand, supply, pricing, consumption
3. Global energy analyst: To analyse the effect of Ethanol production on Human corn consumption.

Let's take the US for example:
Corn is the most widely produced feed grain in the United States, accounting for more than 90 percent of total production. Around 80 million acres of land are planted with corn. The majority of the crop is used as livestock feed; the remainder is processed into a multitude of food and industrial products including starch, sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, corn
oil, and ethanol for use as a fuel. As corn prices rise, agricultural companies stand to benefit as their corn or corn seeds command a higher price in the market. Companies who buy corn or derivative products such as high fructose corn syrup can be hit with much larger
costs when corn prices rise. Corn prices - which usually means the price of corn futures - are intimately tied to energy prices, because corn is used to make ethanol, an additive in gasoline. Corn prices peaked in June 2008 with the Iowa floods - at around $7.88 / bushel, then
fell in late 2008 and early 2009 as commodity prices - and in particular oil prices - declined, a result of a slowing economy brought on by the 2008 Financial Crisis.
Demand for ethanol may be destroyed by the development of a cheaper biofuel. One alternative recieving both attention and research dollars is cellulosic ethanol, made from plant-based materials like wood and grass. The close to one billion dollars of Obama’s stimulus bills spent on advanced biofuels research will make these alternatives more viable, but will also likely increase demand for ethanol as a whole.[1]
Demand for ethanol is also driven by government
regulations requiring a certain percentage of fuel
to be made of ethanol. Several large states, like
New York and California, have put that percentage at 10%. Demand for Corn-Based Ethanol Analysis from the International Food Policy Research estimates that rising demand for ethanol caused 40% of the rise in corn prices from to 2007, and analysis from the CBO estimates that rising demand for ethanol caused 35% of the rise in corn prices in 2008.[2] This is because rising
demand for ethanol directly translates into rising
demand for corn, at least until alternative biofuels
become more price competitive. Demand for ethanol is directly related to the ratio between oil and corn prices – how much ethanol can be sold for (essentially the price of oil) divided by the cost to acquire corn (corn prices). If this ratio is higher than 90%, manufacturers will earn enough money to cover the cost of building an ethanol plant and to use it. "However, governments across the world have implemented subsidies that make it profitable to produce ethanol even when that ratio is below 90%".

I actually do think the OP was asking a rhetorical question and he isn't really seeking for answers or reasons with regards to the question, this i think is one of the quaint business strategies/ideas on the part of the OP, as revealed by his subsequent posts where he is actually marketing himself to potential clients. After all the said and done i must really commend your post for its insightful analysis of the issues relating to the question posed by the OP. Your post has being by far the most meaningful and educative post on this thread. Keep it up...Cheers...!

Ibeg don't let GEJ see or here about this oo because he may inturn decide to remove subsidy from that side too and eventually put corn lovers and pop corn roasters into another round of trouble. Let us maintain our fifty naira like that. God Bless Nigeria.

Alpha2k: What i do is grow maize for marketers @ N6/standard size. We agree on quantity eg. 50,000 standard size. 50,000xN6 =N300,000. A deposit is made for land preparation, planting, weed control & fertilzer. Balance paid at havest time. Farm site is in ogun state. Transportation of harvest cost about N25,000 depending on quantity & distance expecialy lagos. You can reach me on 08062408926. Austin.
just create a thread to market your goods rather than deviating from the aim of this one,you are a wise man i must say.

Alpha2k: It is disturbing to see maize being sold for about N50 when the cost of producing a standard cob of fresh maize on the farm is N6.

My expectation is that having charged marketers N6 to grow a standard cob of maize, giving an investment period of below 4 months, a 100% profit on investment is ok. Making it available to consumers at N20 or worst N25.

In my own area,I buy my roasted corn for 100naira for 3corns.I don't know how much d boiled one cost but I know it's not gonna be up to 50naira.Where are you staying

Yes am a commercial farmer applying modern farming technics to bring down production cost. Hence, i can easily deliver a standard cob of fresh maize for N6. For example i deliver 100,000 fresh corn at N6 to you, you inturn sell to consumers at N20. You would have made not less than 150% profit on your investment which have a waiting period of 3 months.
An advance booking is required to be part of late planting starting in august 2012.
Many thanks to all for your input, phone calls & sms.
Warm Regards,

U started with corn but ended with maize. How and where did the transformation take place. My elementary understanding is that corn is different from maize. Maybe you should use a dictionary for a better understanding and knowledge.
