Pocca:
That's the consequence of nepotism and tribalism

Nope, let's check what the experts says

In 2013, Nigeria decided to privatise the sector. But 10 years after, the expected yields from the privatisation of the NESI have been hampered, in part, by the inability of the Distribution Companies (Discos) to charge cost-reflective tariffs.

As a result, all operators in the NESI value chain have been affected, effectively constraining investment in the downstream, comprising the Discos; midstream, where the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) holds sway and upstream segment, comprising the gas producers and Generation Companies (Gencos).

With such constraints, although total national installed generation capacity stands at 13,000MW, Nigeria barely manages to get a third of that to where power is needed. The rest is stranded.

Thus, what this means is that there’s a misalignment of the entire value chain from gas to consumers. Without cost-reflective tariffs, the federal government has been forced to subsidise the real cost of electricity

But wait, there's more...

Power supply remains a long term business. So, experts have argued that deploying short term loans will not work. What the sector needs are long term-loans at reasonably low interest rates by operators in the industry, which will assist them to scale up their business, roll out new network infrastructure, as well as upgrade and maintain existing infrastructure.

As it is, Gencos and Discos cannot meet their operating costs, much less meet their capital expenditure requirements. Without the latter, Discos in particular are unable to upgrade and expand their networks to supply electricity to underserved and unserved households, businesses and industries in their respective franchise.

Besides, the inability of Discos to charge cost-reflective tariffs, has rendered their businesses ‘unbankable’ and impossible for them to raise debt from banks and capital markets, or even from prospective investors

SAUCE

SO, basically, (or to put it bluntly) Discos need to charge a cost reflective tarrif to earn enough to give us good power

How much is it now. I'll leave the pricing guy to drop it here

He further explained that between January 2020 and January 2023, the electricity tariff increased from 55 per cent to 94 per cent adding that “the unification of FX and current inflationary pressures are pushing cost reflective tariff to N184/kwh.”

SAUCE DEUX

Nothing for tribalism, and every thing to do with paying a tarrif that enables the sector make enough of a profit to fix things.

And you cannot attract investment from big people, when 80% of the country is paying way below N184/KWH. Any investor would see no return on investment.

The irony depicting the state of power and energy under his reigns in Nigeria today. Useless incompetent buffon.

The problem with power supply is not who is in charge, otherwise, you are in essence saying GEJ , whom you admire was also an incompetent buffon since there was no power under his regime.

The problem with power there fore is , as the experts say..a cost reflective tarrif

'Implementing a cost reflective tarrif is vital for discos to cover costs and get return on investments

You are right, however, the problem with our power supply has nothing to do with tribe or 'who we elect'...it has everything to do with not letting the power sector control the price it sets for power

You can't do much if you cannot control your prices.

Cartels, saboteurs frustrating efforts to stabilise power supply."

Who are these cartels? are they spirits? untouchable? masquerade? or above the law? any democratic elected government that keeps mentioning the word cartel are useless and foolish, they should just quit asap, because they are the ones aiding the cartel, that is the drain pipe they use to finish the country.

There is need to privatise every segment of the power industry, from generation, transmission and distribution. Companies that are global players with good track records in the electricity sector should be allowed to bid.Nigerians keep hoping that government can provide electricity, the failure of Nitel,Nigerian Airways, Nnpc refineries etc have not taught us a lesson.

Generation and distribution have been privatised since 2013.

The problem is they are not allowed to set their prices, which means they run at a loss, which means no money to pay for gas, pay for repairs, pay for upgrades, and expansion

These power outages are political, deliberate and intentional .

People selling generators and solar power are likely bribing NEPA officials to continue to give us darkness. Especially now Tinubu is planning to use Solar plants to line his pockets and those of his cronies.

I was in Benin Republic for 2 days in late 2020, let me tell you that I never never witnessed light ever being taken the whole 2 days I was there.

Well it may interest you to learn that Nigeria sells electricity to them and that my 2 days is typical of the stable electricity they always enjoy.

Me I have resolved never to pay any electricity bills if NEPA fails to provide me steady power, I would rather be paying private electricians to reconnect me to the grid anytime NEPA disconnects me.

Stop writing nonsense; Kanji Dam can deliver only 700MW of Electricity, which can barely meet the requirement of Niger state. Nigeria requires a minimum of 60, 000 MW
