How many Nigerian soldiers were killed during the little confrontation they had in the 90s?

I don't know. I read where it was claimed that 50 were killed in multiple clashes, while the Cameroonian side didn't claim how many of their own were killed. But I doubt that Nigeria was the aggressor in any of these clashes - they would just be seen as a big bully if they sent out a real force to attack the Cameroonian soldiers.

You lot claim you're Nigerians, yet you don't even know about the damn country smh.

Northern Nigeria also has alot of potential oil reserves, in the basins across the North. Sokoto, Yobe, and Bornu definitely should be oil producing areas, I kid you not. Middle Belt as well!

The disagreement between the tribes isn't minor - they don't trust one another. Everyone aligns with their tribes before the country, and trust me, Nigeria will never be one. Boko Haram is just the new boogieman in town - before BH, they never trusted one another. Yoruba will always fight for Yoruba interest, Hausa'Fulani will always want to dominate, and Igbos will always think Yoruba owe them for what happened during the civil war.

The don't trust each other because of its history with one another since the war(which is slowly dying down), which is understandable; but if corruption was capped and progression was equal, these issues between the tribes wouldn't be even argued about in the first place. Why do you think Muslim and Christians don't get along in northern Nigeria but they do in Lagos?

Nigerian army back then was ill-equipped, and Cameroon would've smashed them and their alpha jets lol. I know they've got some new hardware, and maybe pull something off right now - but in 2002, there was no way they would've defeated Cameroon.

Don't turn this into a tribal debate - just know oil wealth didn't build Yorubaland.

Your oil money built Abuja and got your thieving politicians rich.

Northern Nigeria is different from Lagos - Lagos is Yorubaland, and Yoruba Muslims and Christians have been living together for e-ons. I'm half Muslim (Paternal side) and half-Christian(maternal side) - and I've a Muslim middle-name, but I'm 'Christian'. We celebrate both Muslim and Christian festivals in my family - that's how Yoruba people live their lives.

Forget it, the tribes in Nigeria will never get along.

Botswana's 'Stunning Achievement' Against AIDS
The southern African nation of Botswana has one of the highest rates of HIV in the world. Nearly 25 percent of all adults in the country are infected with the virus. Only the nearby kingdom of Swaziland has a higher rate.

But Botswana is also remarkable for its response to the epidemic. It has one of the most comprehensive and effective HIV treatment programs in Africa. Transmission of HIV from infected mothers to their fetuses and newborn babies has been brought down to just 4 percent.

A decade ago, Botswana was facing a national crisis as AIDS appeared on the verge of decimating the country's adult population. Now, Botswana provides free, life-saving AIDS drugs to almost all of its citizens who need them.

From Funerals Every Weekend

In the dusty village of Kachikau, near Botswana's northern border with Namibia, the chief of the village, Kgosi Mmualefhe, says the national government has gained control of what was a raging epidemic.

Mmualefhe says there used to be AIDS funerals almost every weekend.

"Nowadays, ever since the drugs were brought in here, the situation is getting better and better and better," he says.

The burden of AIDS in villages like this one wasn't just the deaths and the funerals, but the large number of people who were extremely sick.

"Most of the people who were very, very down, now they're starting to pick up and being able to assist themselves," Mmualefhe says. "Some who couldn't even walk, now they're even walking around the village."

And this is happening across the country.

Pioneering The Battle Against AIDS

Part of the reason Botswana's HIV treatment program has been effective is that the country moved relatively quickly to address the epidemic.

In 2002, Botswana became the first nation in Africa to launch a program to try to provide access to HIV drug treatment nationwide. Now, roughly 95 percent of Botswana citizens who need the medications are on them.

From the beginning of the epidemic, there's been tremendous leadership on the part of the government of Botswana to address the epidemic head on.

- Kathleen Toomey, head of the CDC's office in Botswana

Kathleen Toomey, the head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention office in Botswana, says this was a remarkable achievement.

"From the beginning of the epidemic, there's been tremendous leadership on the part of the government of Botswana to address the epidemic head on," she says.

That leadership started with Festus Mogae, who became president in 1998. Mogae made tackling HIV one of the top priorities of his administration. While in neighboring South Africa, President Thabo Mbeki was questioning whether HIV causes AIDS, Mogae allocated money and resources toward fighting the epidemic.

In the early days of Mogae's administration, roughly 40 percent of babies born to HIV-positive mothers also ended up infected with the virus.

Toomey, at the CDC, says the government set out to stop this.

"They aggressively addressed that through the treatment of mothers, treatment of babies, and brought the rates of mother-to-child transmission down to rates that we see in the industrialized world," she says. "Stunning achievement."

A Treatment Program That's Saving Lives

Botswana has had advantages in addressing HIV that many other countries haven't.

It's a small nation of only 2 million people. It's richer than most in Africa because of large diamond deposits.
A local organization is trying to curb HIV transmission rates among gay men in Kisumu, Kenya.

Francois St. Ker, 55, was on the brink of dying from AIDS in the spring of 2001. Today, he's a successful farmer and is in good health, thanks to treatment for his HIV.

Treating HIV: From Impossible To Halfway There

It also got help from international donors and research institutions. The U.S. government was involved through both the CDC and PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which was launched by President George W. Bush.

But over the course of the epidemic, Botswana has steadily increased its own spending on HIV. The Botswana government now spends more on health care per capita than any other country in Africa.

Farmer Johane Setlhare started taking the drugs in 2007.

"I would have been dead nowadays if I hadn't taken the treatment," Setlhare says.

Just two years after going on the drugs, Setlhare built a new house for himself with his own hands.

"I was surprised seeing myself going on top of the roof of the house and making some bricks for the house," he says.

Setlhare gets his anti-AIDS drugs every month from the public health clinic in the center of the village. He credits the Botswana government AIDS treatment program with giving him back his strength and his life.
if botswana did not have aids the HDI would most likely be in the 70's

Bakassi has always been part of Southern Cameroon, but Nigeria should've claim it because we're the bigger country - and the people there are Nigerians. We shouldn't have gone to ICJ in first place to fight for something that wasn't rightfully ours.

can Nigeria fight againt the french militaty remember our colonial master the dumb brits backed out!

cameroonian is ruled by some brutal dictator
if we were under the military like Abacha it wldnt had happen this way and we were just recovering from military rule and switching 2 some dumb OBJ government-not stable enough
paul biya-the old idio't took advantage of the this time and got alot support from the west

, its not all about using military strength that is the issue here, but wit. During the days when Gen Sani Abacha was a military head of state, the Nigerian military had a clash with the Cameroonian military over our common boundaries. It was the first time pple saw our military might. Abacha mobilized the army, air force and the navy. His idea was to invade Younde. Paul Biya, took up this issue at the African Union, begging Nigeria to stay action. As events ensued, our military had killed hundreds of gendarmes.

Well I didn't want to hear any "probably"s. I just wanted the figures and stats.

If this is about France, then I agree, Nigeria would not want to get into a conflict with France, but what I've read about the Cameroonian military makes me doubt that it was anything to write home about. I don't think it makes sense for the Nigerian government to have had an actual fear of Cameroon's military itself.

Anyway, what's all this about "stealing" oil from Sao Tome and Equatorial Guinea?

paul biya is some smart man
He saw Abacha as a brute and fearless. When Biya mobilized France, Abacha warned french company's and France that Nigeria was ready to take up France in the war. On the other hand, Obj, was seeking for 3rd term and at the same time the position of UN secretary, because, Africa was tipped for it. That was were our leaders sold out. Biya knew this was the right time to sway the west. He succeeded. Now, Obj never got 3rd term and lost out in the UN bid.
