ogugua88: I found my old notebook. Before my blackberry was stolen, *cries*, I was learning Igbo from my cousin via BBM who stays in Abuja. I scribbled a bunch of phrases down and practiced them. I'll go ahead and share some common ones (correct me/us if any are wrong):

Chelu m biko. A nu'm a bia. (Wait for me, please. I am coming [as in "I'll be back" and not what you dutty people have in mind lol])

E' na nu? (You understand?)

E' nu go? (You hear me?)

A nu gom. (I have heard.)

Ula o na tu gi? (Are you tired/is sleep catching you?)

Jisie ike na olu. (Keep up the good work/stay strong at work.)

A gwa gom gi. (I told you.)

A nom ya. (I'm alright.)

Bia ebe a. (Come here.) <--- my mother's favorite.

Gbanye oku. (Turn on the light.)

Gbanyuo oku. (Turn off the light.)

Biko, e weni iwe. (Please, don't be angry. Or, excuse me [begging pardon].)

Nye m aka! (Help!/Give me a hand!)

A ghotaghim. (I don't understand).
nice. Some corrections :

I na-anu ? = are you hearing. . .

I nu go?= have you heard ?

Ura/ula a na-atu gi= are you feeling sleepy?

A gwago m gi= I have told you.

A gwara m gi= I told you.

Biko, e wena/wela iwe=please don't be angry.

Nyelu/nyere m aka= help me.

When I have time, I'll give a lesson on the prepositions (na, ga, kwa, etc) and how to use them(with an apostrophe ' or a hypen - )

Dalu nu.

Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by odumchi: 2:34am On Nov 19, 2012
I thought this might be useful: here's a list of some basic structural words in Central Igbo.

And - yá nà
But - kámà (some say mánà)
Rather - kámà
Or - ma ọ bụ
Because - maka (some say níhì)
If - ọ bụrụ
As a result of - ya mee
What about - kwan

Here's an example of kwan meaning also: "di gi kwan" means: "what about your husband?"

Kwa is one of the strange words that fluctuates greatly in meaning. It can be used to express an idea in the form I a question and can also mean "even", "again" and "also".

Example of kwa meaning again:
Mechie kwá yá ọzọ - Close it again.

Example of kwa meaning also :
Nke ahụ kwa - That one also?

Example of kwa meaning even:
I hụ kwara ihe ahụ? - Did you even see that thing?

Thanks for the corrections Ify.

@Eze Promoe, lol. I'm trying. I understand and can write very basic Igbo. Speaking and reading? That's another thing lol. I called my friend onye oshi yesterday and he laughed to death over my oyibo accent undecided

@Odumchi, thank you very much. I'll write those down too.

Let me remind Eze Ndi Igbo of this thread. Our professors are doing marvelous jobs.

What is the meaning of 'osadebe' cos i have noticed that many bini names start with 'osa' e.g 'osadolor' does it mean that osadebe is a bini name?

Valon4ego: What is the meaning of 'osadebe' cos i have noticed that many bini names start with 'osa' e.g 'osadolor' does it mean that osadebe is a bini name?

'Osadebe' means "God keep [me]". Osa means 'God' in parts of Anambra and Delta. Debe means 'keep'.
Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by ifyalways(f): 5:52am On Nov 23, 2012
^ I think you meant "Olisa". Osa is the shorter version of Olisa which means "God".
Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by odumchi: 8:03pm On Nov 23, 2012
Here is a clear Igbo dictionary that I found. This dictionary is in Onicha dialect (the main dialect of Anambra), and even though it's not Central Igbo, most people will still understand you.

ifyalways: ^ I think you meant "Olisa". Osa is the shorter version of Olisa which means "God".

Ok then. No problem.

My sister, take time read and understand, you will get there. As for me, my parents started speaking Igbo to me at a young age. In fact, when we all gather together (family), we speak Igbo mostly.

I will o, patience is key when learning a language. You're lucky. The only reason I can hear Igbo adequately is because my grandmother taught me when I was a toddler. Once she went back home, my parents spoke only English lol.

I didn't know you spoke Igbo though. You've been promoted to Professor, joining the ranks of Ifyalways, Eze Promoe, Afam4eva and others. Daalu soo lol.

Same case for me! I never grew up in the village. But my parents spoke Igbo to me as a teenager while I reply her in English. But one certain time, my father was denied his visa back home to Nigeria, my mum had to take me to my grandmum, so within that one year i stayed in the village, i also schooled. That place was like another world. We did most of our works there in school in Igbo. We wrote essays, letters, dictation in Igbo. That was how I came to learn Igbo, verbal and written.
