Among the Yorubas his interest primarily was in Ibadan, Ife and Ilorin. I wonder how much he would have in collections if he had toured each of the cities of Yorubaland. More revealing is the fact that as a race Yoruba was far more technologically advanced in 1900 and earlier periods than the non-allied states of Europe and even far ahead than a half of continental USA.

However, they were unable to push back the Fulani who invaded them and pushed much of the Yoruba to the south.

Major towns and cities

Traditionally, the Yorubas organized themselves into networks of related villages, towns and kingdoms; with most of them headed by an Oba (King) or Baale (a nobleman or mayor). The main Yoruba cities and towns are Ile-Ife, Ibadan, Lagos, Ijebu Ode, Abeokuta, Akure, Ilorin, Ijebu-Igbo, Ogbomosho, Ondo, Badagri, Ado-Ekiti, Osogbo, Ilesa, Oyo, Owo, Kabba, Offa, Ilesa, Ilobu, Ede etc. There are other Yoruba cities and towns such as Ketu, Sabe, Dassa and others in Republic of Benin.

There are other towns and cities with historical affiliation with the Yoruba people because they share one or more similarities together. Some of these cities and towns are Benin city, Warri, Auchi, Okene etc.

You are correct.
I understand we were called Anagos until the fulanis coined the name Yorubawa to imply the cunning nature of the Oyo people in trading transactions. Yorubas in Cote d'Ivoire are still called Anango till today.
Oyo dialect dominated as it was the language of the rather large empire that covered almost the entire present day yoruba land.
Can anyone see some similarity in the agbada designs of yorubas and fulanis as well as with royal trumpets (kakaaki oba)
It seems the trading with the Portuguese was mainly by the coastal people such as Ijebus and Binis who had a strong presence in Eko that can still be seen today if you dig well enough.
I think the rather developed nature of the yoruba society was partly based on the city-states that existed very early on thus allowing division of labour, specialisation and civil authority organisation at different levels from the family to household to quarters, village and town/king.

Looks like another attempt to abscond RESPONSIBILITY for our failures!!!

Let us not forget that the yorubas had been trading with the fulanis at the northern fringes of the old Oyo empire and also with Portuguese from the coast since the 15th century. It is not unlikely that the technological items were the result of such interacton as opposed to complete development by the yorubas.

I find it very shameful that our rich cultural heritage is mostly DETAINED and EXPLOITED by our white masters.

Did you hear about the Nok culture? Nok is supposed to be based somewhere in the middle belt of Nugeria today and the archeological finds bear semblance to some of the works from Ife, believe to be the cradle of the yoruba nation.

Nice post. The oyinbo guys handwriting na die. Contrary to what you wrote about him being only interested in Ilorin, Ibadan and Oyo i see him documenting Egba, Idanre and something that looks like Ekiti/Ijebu tribal marks. Wonderful Architecture though. I will like to understand why they chose such a style and how these things fare in raining season. The insides of the homes look like they were made from cement or well polished somehow and very dry. .

Those looms are just genius. I know women used to pass down some wonderful wrappers. When my grandma died we got so many from her and her own mothers as inheritance. Sadly we didnt value them and threw most away. My own share alone was over 30. I feel bad now.
