St_Black: OK. I'm more Concerned about history based on facts and not just throwing appellations around or extolling the tribe on the internet. You'd be surprised most of the posters throwing praises around have not been home before. Wan de 'le ri, wan mo ile baba wan. They just know they hail from so so town/state. I'm deeper than that. |

9jacrip: Thank you for the correction, I felt there was something wrong with that spelling, didn't bother to check. Now, look at it. The Fulani captured Ilorin. How did that affect a place like Ibadan, Ogbomosho or even Lagos Island to the point that the Yoruba population is split roughly 50-50 between Islam and Christianity? The descedants of Alimi who outmaneuvered Afonja to become what is now known as the Emir of Ilorin have never exercised effective political or military control over these places. |

Texas.Cowgirl: Christianity and Islam both upholds animal sacrifice. All religion does. One of the reasons I believe we serve one God. Except some serve God in an unacceptable way in mankind's eyes. |

Texas.Cowgirl: This post rigs of the average southern Nigerian ignorance. Actually Hausas are the ones assimilated into Fulani religion of Islam. Take your time and research on Fulanis. Most of the religious bigots are Fulanis. Do you also know that majority of Nigerian leaders from the North dead and alive are fulanis? Next time you see a person from northern Nigeria, take your time to ask relevant questions. Till then stop this ignorance. 1 Like |

funnyx: The Fulani did not over run any villages. The Fulani successfully held on to Ilorin but Oyo was sacked by Ilorin whose forces were made up of Solagberu's Yoruba Muslims from Oke Suna and Afonja's Yoruba armies mixed with Hausa slaves (Gobirawa). Ilorin could only sack oyo after Lanloke laid siege to oyo Ile. There were several powerful kings/chiefs who were no longer the influence of oyo and who were all suspicious of the others. Some of there were Adegun (Onikoyi), Atiba (who would be Alaafin after fall of oyo Ile), lanloke (Ogodo). Alaafin Amodo in wanting to increase his power sought an alliance with lanloke by giving his daughter to lanloke. Unfortunately, lanloke killed the Alaafin's daughter and fearing that he would be attacked decided to attack oyo ile first. He successfully laid seige to oyo ile and after oyo sucummbed to his siege, Ilorin walked in and destroyed oyo Ile. But you are correct in that Ibadan defeated the Fulani at Oshogbo in 1840. 3 Likes |

9jacrip: I personally don't have to argue with you. It is obvious you aren't enlightened enough to know who LAMURUDU was. There are a number of Yoruba scholars that have confirmed that LAMURUDU is one and the same as NIMROD. It is left for you to become enlightened in actual history of the Yoruba people. On this forum, I only discuss with knowledgeable people who have modern views on legendary Yoruba history like Negro-ntns, katsumoto, physicsQED and Amor4ce. If you could humble yourself, I have so much shocking stories to tell you about the origins of Yoruba people. I am talking about old myths on Yoruba origins that are being demystified day-by-day. One of them is LAMURUDU/NIMROD connection. I rest my case... |

anonimi: But you are overlooking more critical consequences of the internal strife 1. The Yoruba were not organized and couldn't reclaim Ilorin 2. The strife ensured that millions of Yoruba were sold into slavery 3. The British would never have taken over Yoruba land easily. 16 years of the Kiriji war meant the Yoruba were war weary when the British changed strategy from traders into colonialists. |

Tony Spike: There is no foundation in that Lamurudu tale. It was originally told by Sultan Bello. The story goes that Sargon (also known as Nimrod to some) and his followers were expelled from Akkadia. The tale goes further that Sargon was Okanbi in Yoruba, Najib in Hausa, Qanda in Songhay. How can one person be the same in three different places? All these places have Islam in common. But there are arabian records of any escape by any rulers into Africa. Sargon himself dies in his Kingdom and was succeeded by his son Rimush. Second, If Sargon/Nimrod escaped in 605 BC, how can be Oduduwa's son/father/etc. if Oduduwa existed in the 12th century? Did it take him 1800 years to reach Ife. It is time that folks start finding historically plausible evidence to support this Lamurudu tale. 2 Likes |

9jacrip: Partly correct. Islam was present in Yoruba land through traders from Songhay etc. Islam came to be accepted because of war. Islamic tutors in those days used to have charms for protection. When Afonja revolted against Alaafin Aole, he went to Sheikh Alimi for charms to reinforce himself. When the internecine wars started in the 19th century, many Yoruba sought these charms from Islamic tutors and that was how many of them converted to Islam. |
