abiodunalasa: @ OP you said the Yorubas are from OYO, but what about IFE ??

Well, am a political economist, not an historian. However, I deal wif history a lot. And as it were, have never come across a source in what ever means, pointing OYO as the FUNDAMENTAL city of the Yorubas.

But, be it as it may, if you fink u are right, pls post a link to ur source.
yes, yorubas didnt originate frm oyo but ife instead as u v said, anoda point u need to just know is dat ife itself is an entity of d OYO kingdom.d whole states in SW combined together then were known as a singly as d OYO empire, kingdom etc.
although to say yorubas are frm oyo may sound incorrect to d ears,an indirect reference can also prove correct as ife itself was part of d oyo empire(not oyo city pls)...but to say yorubas are frm oyo town in todays oyo state,HELL NO..
GET D DRIFT?..

I also do not think it is a coincidence that the staff of oranmiyan is also present in egypt and ethiopia in the form of obelisks. Read up on dierk lange "Yorubas and the 12 tribes of israel", this german writer proposes that during the fall of judah and northern israel, yorubas migrated first to egypt, then to sudan and finally southwest nigeria.

yorubas of where, are you referring to?

you have to be specific, since yoruba is a recent term.

what part didn't you understand? there is an obelisk in lagos city, which is meant to signify the staff of oranmiyan. By referring to egypt and ethiopia, I meant to draw parallels between the existence of the statue in those locations, and the possibility of a near-east origin for the yorubas.. sorry

Well both of my parents are from oyo state, so i guess I'm 100% yoruba.. Samuel Johnson is my source.. he also wrote about lamurudu. sultan bello of the sokoto caliphate wrote about yorubas descending from an arabian king. I am also aware of the similarities in religion and tribal marks between the sudanese, the kanuris and yorubas. There is a book in ife which odduduwa brought with him from the near east, it is still impossible to translate the language. Also yorubas in ancient time designed a method of written language with knots and strings, which is very similar to the ancient hieroglyphs of the egyptians. The religious systems of ancient egypt and yoruba are also similar

Crassus: Katsumoto i have a question..What do u know about the akoko people.. they seem a little bit different from the other yorubas

There are parts of Akoko (Ikare) that are pure Yoruboid (from Ife). There are parts (Dada, Akunnu) that are mixed Yoruba, Edo, and Nupe. The third part (Isua, etc) have ancestry that migrated from Benin. The mixture of the groups probably arose as Oba Ozolua journeyed through Akoko to wage war against the Nupes or Igallas (maybe both of them; I have to check).

Yoruba can never accept the falsification of her history however quack historians write up.Oduduwa was the son of lamurudu who was killed in mecca during islamic jihad. He had no choice than to live th e city and wondered through egypt, gulf of aden and passed through sudan, chad, northern borno. He reached Bussa in niger and crossed the river niger until he finally get to an unhabited forest where he later called ile-ife (home of dwelling). Many followed him on the way and he had many wives and seven children who later established their own fortresses in various kingdoms such as alake of egba, alaketu of ketu, onisabe of sabe, onipopo of popo, owa obokun of ijesha, oranmiyan of oyo, ooni of ife and olowu of owu.Any other first class oba in yorubaland that is not mentioned was established by the oyo empire.Oranmiyan being the last born left ife and went to benin where he became the first oba but left in annoyance later due to some pronounced differences where he called ile ibinu(land of anger in yoruba).Thereafter, the name benin emerged after various mixing by itsekiris, urhobo and portuguese. He returned to ile-ife but decided leaving sooner to avenge his grandfather killing and revive yoruba ifa religion in mecca but he failed due to unclear ways to the destination and stopped at borgu where he meet some elders presented him a calabash and snake. The elders instructed him to hang the snake round his neck and followed the directions the snake points to and wherever it disappeared is the destination to carry out the revenge according to their beliefs.Oranmiyan did not hesitate to follow the instructions due to his focus on avenge mission but unfortunately, the snake disappeared at a place in woodland savannah where their is no evidence of islamic activities and finally gave up on his mission. He named the place oyo and automatically. become the first alaafin of oyo.Due to old age,he left oyo and went back to ile-ife after installing his first son ajaka as the second alaafin. In ife,the benin elders paid him a visit and pleaded for his return to become their king after the demise of his rival but he declined and told them to install his son owomika(eweka) as their next oba because he remembered he impregnated a benin woman erhimwinde on his way back to ile ife in anger and that is how benin became yoruba ally.

gbaky_floor:

What is silly about my question?

Before this post, I had carried out my own research and I noticed the pictures of the yoruba women during the colonial era had something unique. The females all had their head hairs cut. This triggered my curiosity.

Pls notice the pictures of yoruba women posted in this thread without head gears. Are you not a tiny bit curious why they shave their head hair like men?

I thrive on knowledge. I love to know about everything. I want to know the story behind the ancient yoruba women shaving their head hairs like men. I want to know why such is no longer obtainable today.

Please if you know someone that knows someone that knows why it was that way back then, help me get the story and post it here.

It is unfortunate I don't speak Yoruba, I would have gone myself to query old Yoruba women and we all know the average Yoruba person responds perfectly only to queries that are communicated in Yoruba language.

Perhaps if my Yoruba grand mother was still alive, I would have asked her.

Please help put my curious mind to rest and I will be very grateful. Thank you.

Hey gbaky wassup,

I made a decision not to get in the discussions; I just wanted to post the images. I will make an exception and share my thoughts on your question of why Yoruba women sport low hair cut. I do not know with certainty why this is done but I have plausible reasons to believe that this unique hair styling has both practical and vanity reasons to it. Other people may come up with other reasons but here is mine.....

1. Climate and Weather
2. Social Class and Status
3. Menopausal changes

1. The biological function of hair on the body is to insulate against harsh environmental elements. Because we are located in the hot humid equatorial forest our body hair growth is in such low density and length so as to aid in dissipating heat and cooling off the body.

Shaving off the hair or keepit it low makes cooling off easier.

2a. Ilari influence. The popularity of fade hair cut with Female Ilaris may have made this style trendy with women beyond palace walls.

2b. Head cover as a social status. Young unweded Yoruba women traditionally wear light cover on their head in public. Wedded women in child bearing range and unweded mothers wear a light cover on head and an additional layer of light veil. This is required in a formal setting but expected in public outing. Women past child bearing age wera a light head cover and a thicker cover draped over the head and shoulders.

The layers trap in heat, therefore keeping short hair under the layers seem to be a compromise for cooling off.

3. With menopause comes a full bloom of grey tufts that top the dark undergrowth. Keeping that hair very short leaves the dark strands in view and makes the person appear younger than their actual age; they will therefore be assessed favorably for mating than would be the case otherwise.

Hope my answers helped somewhat.

And so you believe these myths because you were alive at this period of history? Oral Yoruba history is plagued with a number of historical inconsistencies, some of which you put up there. That's why we have topics like this on Nairaland to separate truths from fictions.
