This sun is firing me,
One Ice cold water.

Yes o, plus "ice water tutu re" grin (ice is 'tutu' in Yoruba so that is tautology)!

If I borrow you my book when will you return it back to me? (using borrow in place of lend)

What's return back? tongue

I will 'sound' you now you will cry!

candy:

How about calling every woman who is older than you aunty and every male uncle even when they are not in any way related to your parents grin grin grin

Bifo nko? You want to call them by name? Abomination!!! Words like 'uncle, aunty, brother and sister' have been borrowed from English and have come to stay. Besides, can't you call your mum's friend or your friend's Mum 'Mummy'? Are you related biologically? A-beg, no-tosh-tradition o grin grin grin

We borrowed the words from oyinbo but must we bastardize them? Aunty/uncle means the sister/brother of someone's father or mother, or the wife of someone's uncle or husband of someone's aunt! What is worth borrowing at all is worth using well! Some people even call their sisters aunty instead of sister! The fact that a lot of people misuse these words doesn't make it right. . . it's just being Nigerian. And yes, I call all my mum's friends mummy, all my dad's friends daddy, every female older than me aunty, every male uncle . . . because i'm a Nigerian who doesn't want to trash borrowed tradition! grin grin

No matter what we say about the way Nigerians speak, we all know they make us laugh.
When I went to Nigeria two weeks ago I was laughing all through out my trip grin

I think the thing that my mom says that just irks me is when I really want to do/have something that she doesn't want me to do/have and
i insist upon it and she says:

"we shall see"

ARGHHHHHHHHH! i would pay money to have her not say that anymore! I think the worst part is that it looms over me before i'm going to get/do that thing and sometimes forces me to chicken out, LOL!!!
Re: Annoying Nigerian Sayings by mbola(f): 7:48pm On Jul 30, 2008
minerals (soft drink) embarassed embarassed embarassed
Re: Annoying Nigerian Sayings by ow11(m): 10:12pm On Jul 31, 2008
@ebonyj

The passport one annoys me to bits. I always ask if there is a local passport! Since a passport sized photograph is simply called passport, therefore a passport has to get a new name hence the 'international'

Another one is 'that man is a gay'.There's a thread with an opening remark like that.
Re: Annoying Nigerian Sayings by mi3(f): 3:36am On Oct 19, 2008
LOL @ this thread, there are plenty of them! let me try and recollect,

"leda" or "paperbag" (as one word!!) to mean a polyethene bag, or just plain wataproof cheesy

"It's a lie!", when someone tells you something shocking

"bic" for pen

Hummer Jeep, prado Jeep, Honda Jeep, it's only they that know when all these companies merged with Jeep

"his dress was/is fine", no comment

"if i KONK you ehn!", meaning knock on the head

"don't ax me anything!", is ASK so hard to pronounce?

"Silpas" for slippers

"Umblerra" for Umbrella

"oyi" for Oil

"where went you?", had a teacher that insisted this was proper, argh!

"are you on line?" said to me by some guy, apparently he was asking for my phone number,

hearing of smells, eg. i can hear the way the stew is scenting

"Handset" for mobile phone

and this one is an intonation thing, but let me try, maybe someone will understand,

when introducing themselves they go, mAI Nem is Emeka, with the "My" acquiring an ascending tone, it irritates me silly!

then "krokrosh" for cockroach

"tea" to represent every beverage under the sun

Butter abi it's "bottah" when they mean margarine

another one that comes up during introductions, "i am Andrew by name"
