The god of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction:

Jealous and proud of it
A petty, unjust unforgiving control freak
A vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser
A misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Those of us schooled from infancy in his ways can become desensitized to their horror. A naif blessed with the perspective of innocence has a clearer perception. Winston Churchill's son Randolph somehow contrive to remain ignorant of scriptures until Evelyn Waugh and a brother officer, in a vain attempt to keep Churchill quiet when they were posted together during the war, bet him he couldn't read the entire bible in a fortnight: "Unhappily it has not had the result we hoped. He has never read any of it before and is hideously excited; keeps reading quotations aloud " I say I bet you didn't know this came in the bible . . . " or merely slapping his side and chortling "God, isn't God a shit"' Thomas jefferson, better read, was of a similar opinion: "The Christian God is a being of terrific character - cruel, vindictive, capricious and unjust."

Can anyone make a case that these attributes of God as described above are unjustified?

Well, let me begin by saying that the creator, however he might be called is holy, faithful and true. He is just and all his ways are laced with mercy and compassion for his people (mark, his people). Okay, now most would want to say that the personalities as exhibited by him in the old testament was markedly different from the picture that one would derive from the rendition from the Greek scriptures. Well, this is very easy to understand if you would take into consideration the creation story and how man rebelled against his creator and thus enmity was put between man and God.

This was the handiwork of Satan if we rightly remember because he was seeking for the worship that man offered to the creator. This was a worship that satan had craved to the point of deceiving some of the hosts in heaven. Well, man made his choice, he chose satan and the almighty rightly turned his face from mankind allowing his ultimate remedy to unfold over the following eons of mans existence on earth.

Okay, now where were we, yes, we were talking about how God turned his face away from mankind, but for those that actually chose to follow his ways, he showed a great jealousy as his own integrity was at stake in the defence of those that chose to follow his ways, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Jacob and his descendants who became the nation Israel. Man has sinned, thus he deserves to die, but if he was faithful, death was not a threat to Jehovahs followers as he was willing to go great lengths to see that his people lived out their lives in full.

Remember now that all the other nations were worshipping satan (via the many idols), so when ever the paths of Gods people and the world occured, Gods people always prevailed. It was assumed that casualties of war on the side of the heathens were regarded as having met thier end as a result of the curse in Eden that "on the day thou shall eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shall surely cease to exist/die". Okay, they got suckered by a wrathful God, but a God showing love and care to his chosen people of the then world.

Check out the spectacular show against a world dominion like Syria, that must have been an awesome show of love on behalf of his people. Who cares if it was wickedness to the heathen Sennacherib representing one of the worldly powers that satan controlled but the almighty was showing unsurpassed love and care to his faithful followers in the face of a seemingly insurmountable opposition and an impossible situation?

Now, the Greek scriptures shows us the unfathomable depths of that love of the Hebrew scriptures which we saw being exhibited, now that his remedey had played itself out, the man Jesus came to reconcile the almighty to man and that love is freely given to each and every individual of the earth, even when we are undeserving of such abundant show of mercy. And that is a story of love that has never been seen before now and that would continue to be told for all eternity, whether we like it or not (ooops, sorry) grin

Now, don't go mixing up concepts, I would understand if you're casting aspersions at contemporary christianity as I believe that along with other world religions, they have totally misfired in their established doctrines and traditions to the extent that religion today is seen as an amusement that is increasingly becoming a nuisance than a facilitator of morality and welfare of humanity, politics and all other things that it had involved itself in over the last centuries of mankind.

Yeah, religion sucks, but now when we're talking the Great Daddy Jehovah and his Son-King Jesus, wow, it beats my mind how most folk can't grasp the the reality of this drama of mankind unfolding before our very eyes, smiley
