Are you saying American music declined because all top artistes at one time in America worked with Sean Paul who sings in pidgin?

yomalex: Limpopo.

I was like what is this guy saying the first time I heard it.

Lim po po as in Lim po po.

is it not supposed to be the name of a river ?

If you hear something over and over again, you become de-sensitised to it.

That is the key. Persuation through repetition. Its like hypnosis. The reason why radio stations and the intellectual property guys are at each others throats and the artistes themselves are betwix.

The first time I heard 'Skelewu' I was like, this is a huge risk, man this is bad, real poor but a few months down the line its some sort of fad.

I think longetivity is the key. 90 percent of tracks here barely last 12 months on the mind just like Nollywood flicks, just like cheapo chinco mass produced stuff. I remember the period before the Nigerian music scene when you could wait 3 or 4 years for a new album release.

We will get there when our artistes advance to more 'mental music' than the current dominance of 'dance music'. Style plus may be gone but in ten years I will be appreciative of their musics. Can't say the same for Oliver Twist et al. Right now our music is all Faith....hearing and hearing....and dancing alone.

i still always say it, wizkid is hype. Boy dnt wanna grow up with his lyric. And to add insult to injury, he went n recorded that CARO shit lyk we nursery pupil. Rhymin' is all we do here without strong lyric n most of they rhymes're too cheap. Another trend is recycled n repeatitive lines which almost all naija artiste are guilty of

blink182: do you think timaya has only one album? You are just too lazy to think and most of the songs on your list are there because those the only nigerian songs you know.

As for me, I really can't discriminate because Nigeria's music industry presently has stiff competition and gaining wide acceptance doesn't come by luck rather it means you have done a good song.

Oh please.Only Timaya's first, and half his second album made sense to me undecided. It's you who's too lazy to think, because if you think at all, you'd realise that most of his songs are utterly meaningless.
And how can such crap be the only naija songs I know?
I listen to mostly rap,R n B and some afro fusion from selected naija artistes cool, and of course foreign acts.

Nigerians love club bangers and shiit like that,so of course all these songs surely have 'wide acceptance'.Doesn't mean they're good songs undecided

Brings to mind what functional music is all about which is lacking in most local songs. Besides, I think the kind of songs you listen to depends on your level of intelligence. My take.
Re: Nigerian Songs You Can't Understand How They Became Hit Songs by tintingz(m): 10:19am On Nov 23, 2013
thegoodjoehunt: Please a hit is not all about deep lyrics and conscious statements. Creating fun out of words with rhythm is also part of a hit. Even if it doesn't make sense but people can jive to it.

If there are no melodious tones, all clubs will fold. Look at foreign tracks like,
Country grammar-Nelly
Thoinga Thiong -R. Kelly
Like Glue-Sean Paul
Love is wicked-Brick and Lace.

By the way, if Skelewu isn't a hit. How can a hot bid like this come out from it.

I think like most things Nigerian the music scene reflects the society we live in. If we want quality we must demand it and be prepared to sacrifice, to pay for it.

I believe if artistes get their dues through strong intellectual property protection institutions the quality of music will improve. More time will be devoted to research and development. If artistes will earn income long term they are more likely to produce fewer but better quality works. But if their primary paymasters are MTN, GLO, and the rest, they will produce music akin to adverts, short, shallow, made to catch attention, customised- product driven and no more.

Its up to us the public to sieze the initiative from big business and 'big men' by ensuring our beloved artistes get paid their dues. And it starts by paying for music.

What you may call trash song can make sense to someone else.

As far as im concerned, we dance to beats and if we talk about lyrics then i rate our songs zero or may be most songs.

To me, Asa and ecxetera still remains musicians to beat in terns of lyrics.
