Dream Team: Siasia wants Uyo as home ground

The coach of the Nigeria U23 team, Samson Siasia has proposed that the new Akwa Ibom Stadium be the home ground of the team as they seek qualification fro the All Africa Games and the 2016 Olympics.

- I think Uyo will be a good place for the team to concentrate and win both tickets for the Games because the environment is friendly, Siasia said.

Impressed

- I was in Uyo when the Super Eagles played their games and I was impressed with what I saw.

- The Uyo fans also came out to cheer the Super Eagles even when things were not going their way. The total support from the fans is what I need to motivate my team against any opposition. So, I have settled for Uyo, he further added.

Arrivals

According to the media officer of the national U-23 team, Timi Ebikagboro, the team would go on break December 21, and return to camp January 4, 2015.

Meanwhile, four more Europe-based players joined the team on Wednesday. The new arrivals are Iroha Chinazom from AD Oliveirense (Portugal), Ovoke Benard from KAA Gent (Belgium), Gomo Onduku from Iasi (Romania) and Adedapo Adeniyi from the USA.

Maybe after qualifying for the Olympics they should start playing European and South American oppoaition.
What the U23 lads need now especially those ajebo foreign based is thé mental and physical strenght to compete against African oppositions.
Most of them have never played under a hostile environment and on bumpy pitches.
Jst imagine taking those Nigerian boys that play for Arsenal ånd Chelsea to play a game in Lubumbashi at 2pm kick-off time in d sunny afternoon and on a bumpy pitch. Na die b dat.
Even if the pitches are rough, they are ways around those things. If not, Egypt would never dominate African football because they play in better conditions than other African sides.

There was a CAF champions league game that was to be played in Nigeria. The I think Raja Casablanca side camped and trained in Spain, while our 3SC side coached by Fani Amun (Kanu and Oruma's U17 coach) trained in Nigeria. We were beating 3-2 by the Raja side. I believe technical play always trumps power play.

C, when it comes to age grade competitions Nigeria and Ghana are ranked along side Brazil and Argentina. What has Belgium or Italy that u mentioned won be it U17, U20, or U23?I even rate more highly youth teams from CIV, Guinea, Mali, Cameroun than most of those European teams.
I have been following youths football for abt 30yrs.
What we need for the U23 now are friendlies with Mostly West African rivals. Benin or even Togo can serve d purpose.

Dream Team get Egyptian challenge

The national U-23 team are scheduled to face their counterparts from Egypt in fa series of friendly matches in January 2015 ahead of their All-Africa Games qualifier against Gabon on February 7, the Nigeria Football Federation has said.

The first two games will be played in Nigeria on January 15 and 17, while the other two ties will be played in Egypt on January 20 and 22.

Crucial

Nigeria coach, Samson Siasia commended the NFF for arranging the matches, saying the games would put his team in the right frame of mind before their crucial engagement.

Siasia said his team would depart for Turkey, after the Egypt friendlies, for another round of intensive training.

The former Super Eagles forward wants the team to embark on a training tour of Turkey, Dubai and Malta before facing Gabon.
Fantastic development. Early preparation is critical to success. I hope this will be the end of pur fire brigade approach. The Egyptian side will be a good test.

Siasia Pleads For Time

Dream Team Coach Samson Siasia has admitted that producing another Olympic team for Nigeria is a big challenge and has pleaded for time to make things happen.

The former Super Eagles coach has been tasked with the responsibility of moulding another team to represent Nigeria at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, after winning a silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, and Siasia reckons that it is another huge challenge for him and his coaching staff.

“It’s a big challenge and it’s always a challenge for us and hopefully we will surmount the challenge and build a good team,” Siasia told sl10.ng.

The 47-year-old has enjoyed the support of the Nigerian football fans since his appointment and remains arguably the most loved football coach in the country.

He says he is aware of the support and adds that he hopes to build a very good team for the country.

“I know they support me and I appreciate them and hopefully we will build a very good team for the country,” said Siasia.

But despite the support he has enjoyed, Siasia admits that he will need some more time, and called for patience, adding that he hopes to make Nigeria proud in the end.

“Well I know they expect a lot from me, we’ve just started and gradually we’ll get there. They have to be very patient because we are working very hard to produce a team that will make the country very proud,” he added.

The team will have their last training sessions on Friday, and embark on a break before resuming after the Christmas celebrations.

Troost-Ekong Hoping To Train With Nigeria Under 23s In Turkey

Nigeria's Under 23 coach, Samson Siasia, has started laying the groundwork for ex Holland youth international William Troost-Ekong to attend the Dream Team's training camp in Turkey next month.

The 21-year-old's dream of turning out for Nigeria instead of Holland was realized after Samson Siasia invited him for a training camp this month, but club commitments with FC Dordrecht meant he could not make the trip to Abuja.

Now, William Troost-Ekong is hoping to show off his defensive skills to Samson Siasia in January, but the eggheads at his Dutch club will have to dictate whether or not he links up with the Nigeria squad for the first time.

"I spoke to coach Siasia after my recent invitation to the camp in Nigeria, and I told him I couldn't make it because of my game with FC Dordrecht against PSV," William Troost-Ekong told SL10.ng.

"We discussed the possibility of me joining the camp in Turkey in January and my progression so far at FC Dordrecht.

"I will have to await the official invitation at the club so that we can work out if I can attend!

"I would love to join up with the team and coach so we can get a better understanding of each other."

William Troost-Ekong has admitted he is relishing the clash on Saturday in the Eredivisie against Groningen, who own his economic rights.

"This weekend is a special game for me as we play against FC Groningen, the team who have loaned me out.

"I think we can get a result and it will be very important to finish our last game of 2014 on a high.

"I will be eligible to play and looking forward to the weekend," he concluded.

In his 12 outings for FC Dordrecht in the league this term, William Troost-Ekong has been cautioned only once.

Siasia: European Tour Will Benefit Us

Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia believes the friendlies against Egypt and the overseas training camps will benefit his team, as they prepare for the 2015 All Africa Games qualifiers.

The Dream Team VI have already been booked to play a four-legged international friendly with the Egyptian U23’s, and then a playing tour of Turkey and possibly Malta and the United Arab Emirates before their first Africa Games qualifier against Gabon on February 20, and Siasia believes having such preparations can only be beneficial to the players and make them improve.

“It’s a good thing that we are going for the overseas training camp and also playing the friendly matches against Egypt, it is what we asked for and I think it is good preparation for the boys. They have been training locally here and it is time to test against international opposition and see if they can stand the test,” Siasia told SL10.ng.

The 47-year old has also not been lucky to have the bulk of the overseas based players he invited and has been working with a handful of overseas based players that showed up and majorly the home based players.

But he says he still do not expect to have the full complement of the invited overseas based players for the tour, but says he hopes he can get a few more of them.

“It will not be a FIFA free period so we understand we may still not get all the overseas based guys but we hope some of them can join us there, since it will be easier for them,” Siasia reckoned.

Amadu Warns Siasia Over Overseas Based Players

General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation Musa Amadu has warned Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia on the invitation of overseas based players, insisting that it will be very difficult to get the players released for their programs.

Amadu, who had earlier told SL10.ng that European clubs are not obliged to release their players to the Dream Team for competitions outside the FIFA free window, also wants the Beijing 2008 Silver winning coach to focus more on the home based players and take a cue from his predecessor, Austin Eguavoen.

“Like I have told you before, the European clubs are not obliged to release their players for any competition outside the FIFA window and I’m sure the coach (Siasia) understands that too. We at the NFF will work hard to ensure we get as many of them as possible, but he must also learn from the mistakes of Austin Eguavoen the last time.

“He depended too much on the overseas based players and when they didn’t show up, it became a problem because the competition didn’t fall into any of the FIFA free windows. But I’m happy he has started working with the home based lads and we will do everything possible to provide all the support he needs,” Amadu added.

The Dream Team VI have gone on break for the Christmas celebrations, but are expected to resume back in the first week of January.

Aneke Secures Win For Zulte-Waregem

Zulte-Waregem moved up to 10th on the Jupiler League table in Belgium with a 1-0 win over Mouscron Peruwels courtesy of a goal from Anglo-Nigerian Chuks Aneke.

Aneke scored the game's tie breaker in the 39th minute to make it two goals in his last four games after scoring in the 2-1 Belgian Cup win over Lierse.

Overall that was his second goal in the League from 18 games since joining on a free transfer from English Premiership side Arsenal in the summer.

Despite being eligible for England, reports has it that he is among the recent crop of players who have switched allegiance to Nigeria in the past six months.

A graduate of Arsenal Hale End academy and nicknamed Arsenal's Yaya Toure during his budding days, Aneke found few opportunities at Arsenal, a club he joined at the age of seven despite five different loan spells.

Last season was his most productive stint on loan, as he scored 14 times for League one side, Crewe Alexandria, but Arsenal didn't offer him a new deal hence his move away after the expiration of his deal.

The 21-year-old is yet to be capped by England and Nigeria at any level.

Man City starlet Iheanacho injured again

Manchester City starlet Kelechi Iheanacho has been sidelined by an ankle injury raising concerns over his availability for both the Nigeria U20 and U23 teams.

AfricanFootball.com has specially learnt the FIFA U17 World Cup MVP is currently back in Manchester nursing the injury after a stint training with MLS side Colombus Crew.

In August, Iheanacho suffered a hamstring injury, which kept him out for several weeks.

The left-footed forward is now expected to be granted a work permit to ply his trade in the UK after Manchester City applied for it from the British Home office.

Iheanacho has been called up by both Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, and the country’s Olympic team for crucial qualifying matches in the New Year.

You are missing the point. The U23 Olympics football is close to top professional football. Coach Siasia has to get our players playing technically together. Most of the players on Africa can not walk into a top league without going through some changes. Most of the African sides do not play technical football.

A top European team play to positional weakness and team coordination. So our side might look formidable but against a technical side, they would crumble. So playing such teams will improve our technical side and make the team click faster.

Egyptian teams already play technically, so they do not need development in that area, compared to us. You can not compare the development technical play between Egyptian clubs and our clubs.

My Brother i get ur point. You are right in d sense dat our boys need quality European opposition.Bt nt at this stage.
u must understand dat there is a différence btw tehcnical ability and tactical ability.
West African teams are usually gifted technically bt playing as a team they lack certain tactical abilities.
The Egyptian team mayb better than d Nigerian team tactically bt nt technically.
However my point is a friendly against Ghana, CIV, Cameroun or even Egypt would prove more productive @ this African qualifying stage than a friendly against European teams. Our boys need to know how to over come d physicality and technicality of some of these African sides.
After we qualify for d Olympics oh bring on Belgium, bring on Spain, bring on Holland.

Iwobi Could Play For Nigeria

Arsenal striker Alex Iwobi is open to the idea of featuring for Nigeria's Olympic National Team, according to his uncle and retired Nigeria international Emmanuel Okocha.

The England youth international was called up to the Dream Team by coach Samson Siasia for a training camp earlier this month, but the 18-year-old did not turn up for the screening exercise.

This fuelled speculation that he would prefer to wear the colours of the Three Lions to that of his country of birth, Nigeria.

Speaking to SL10.ng, Emma Okocha has put those suggestions to bed, saying Alex Iwobi will honour future invitations, even though he will keep his options open.

“The boy is 18 and he is entitled to his own opinion. He is a young boy, but he has potential at the same time,” Emma Okocha said to SL10.ng.

“People with dual citizenship are torn between choosing the country they want to represent. He will honour Nigeria's call up in future and weigh his options.

“He grew up in England and playing for Nigeria is a different experience. In future, he will know where to lay his bed.”

Emma Okocha has tipped his nephew to be successful in his professional career, but resisted the urge to compare the attacker to either himself or ex-Super Eagles skipper Jay Jay Okocha.

“No two players are the same. Alex is a great potential, he was picked for Arsenal since he was seven and a half years and has been growing with them,” he added.

“We always pray our younger ones are better than us. I see him being a great player but I don't want to compare him to Jay Jay or myself.”

Alex Iwobi penned a two-year professional contract with the Gunners in May.

Siasia: I See Future Super Eagles In My Team

The U23 handler has hailed the quality of players that attended the screening exercise he conclude recently where he has picked 39 players both home and abroad for final camping

Under-23 coach Samson Siasia has tipped the current crop of players in the Dream Team VI fold is being capable of restoring the country’s lost glory in football if given adequate time after he culled the list of the players that would resume camping with the side ahead of the final phase of build up for the all important All African Games’ qualifiers with Gabon in February next year.

Siasia disclosed that the team's training will now move into the more serious phase as he and his technical crew have been able to select the boys from the men, and that this is time to go into tactical.

He said: "I must commend all those who came for the exercise, that we did not select you does not mean you are not good enough, but the reality is that only 35 players must be selected, and that was the job we did.

"We have dropped you now, for you to go back to your clubs and work extra hard to make this team in future, the doors of this team are not shut on you, if you improve and we see you playing for your clubs we will invite you to come and fight for a shirt, so don't be discouraged at not being selected.

"For those of you selected, you are just lucky, but to keep your place in this team you must go back home and continue training so as not to fall by the way side when we begin the next phase of camping, I have been impressed with what you guys have shown me and I can safely say we have a future."

After grueling and tedious exercise, Siasia has picked 39 players ahead of his final phase of preparations for the team’s All African Games qualifiers against Gabon in February.

According to media officer Timi Ebikagboro, only four foreign-based players made the cut while Siasia also trimmed down on the list of the home-based players to only 35.

Samsunspor of Turkey wantaway striker, Aminu Umar topped the list of the overseas professional retained by Siasia along with Stanley Amuzie (Sassuolo, Italy), Atanda Sodiq (FK Apolonia, Albania) and Ebere Paul Onuachu (Midtjylland, Denmark).

There are 35 home -players and these are to resume at the Serob Hotel camp of the team in Abuja on January 4 with their international passports.

The U23 gaffer said he had to select only four foreign professionals, so as not to build a team foreign players alone, and that as the team progresses more of such players will be invited to camp to also be part of the fold.

Coach Samson Siasia impressed me with his fast paced work. His screening exercise looks promising and I hope the young lads make him proud.

The only set back was the sending of invitation letters to the foreign based players. I believe more would have joined the camp of the letters were sent earlier.

I hope the squad is made up of highly skillful players because that is lacking in the current Super Eagles squad. In the AFCON qualifiers against Congo, Sudan and South Africa. At is, the second leg, we saw the impact of a skillful Aluko did to the result of the team.

I hope the friendly games are televised. Especially, the European and Egyptian games. This will enable fans know the team and develop affinity and support for them.

Good Luck to the New Dream Team and Coach Samson Siasia and his crew.

U23: Siasia begs for media help

CHIEF coach of the national U-23 men’s football team, Dream Team VI, Samson Siasia, has called on the sporting press to avail him any information on the players selected, to help him present a scandal free team.

- This is our team, and there is no way my technical staff and I, will have all the information about the players we have selected from the screening exercise, so I am appealing to the sporting press to feel free in giving us information on any player they think is not fit to be in the team, Siasia said.

Credible

- Instead of going to the public with such stories, I am appealing to all stakeholders including club managers whom these players must have played under, to give us credible information.

- I can assure you that such information will be put to use, he added.

Disclosure

The former Super Eagles chief coach disclosed that just as he listened to some of them in the invitation of players to the team during the screening exercise, it is work in progress.

- I still need the support of the media in getting out a good team that will be the pride of all Nigerians, he concluded.

The Nigeria U23 team, Dream Team VI, will now face Tunisia in a friendly to prepare for an All African Game qualifier against Gabon after another build-up match against Egypt was cancelled.

The Dream Team will battle Gabon at the end of February.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have now re-arranged another international friendly with the U23 team of Tunisia, with the first leg in Nigeria and the return leg in Tunis.

The coach Samson Siasia-led team will now resume on Wednesday, January 7, instead of the earlier date of Sunday, January 4.

The players are expected to arrive the Serob Hotel Abuja camp of the team on Wednesday, while training will commence the next day.

According to a release by the team's media officer, Timi Ebikagboro, the shift in date was due to the cancelation of the friendly against Egypt earlier billed to be played on the 15th and 17th in Nigeria, with the return legs in Cairo almost immediately.

Marino Dies the communications manager of Anorthosis confirmed to Gazzzeta.dr they have lodged a bid for the services of the 22-year-old who is not in Olympiakos's roster for the season.

However they face stern competition for his services from Greek side Egrotelis who are also interested in having the former Nigeria Under-20 player in their ranks this winter.

Olympiakos are willing to let him leave on loan to fully regain match fitness after his unfortunate slump last season during the derby game against Panathinaikos.

The Nigerian who scored 8 times in 16 games for Olympiakos before the slump was a doubt to play football again at the start of the season and Olympiakos didn't include him in their list of five foreigners allowed per team in Greece.

In what he called his second chance to live, Olaitan has recovered brilliantly and has been training with Olympiakos the past two months.

Arsenal's Iwobi Picks Nigeria Over England

Arsenal forward, Alex Iwobi has decided his international future as he has chosen to represent Nigeria over England, sl10.ng can confirm.

The 18-year old has been courted by both the England Football Association and the Nigeria Football Federation, but the Arsenal starlet appears to have chosen to represent the Africans.

Iwobi, who captains Arsenal’s U21 squad stormed the camp of Nigeria’s U23 men’s football team, The Dream Team, on Wednesday morning, and looks set to make the squad, as he is expected to train with the Nigerian side for a few days before returning to England.

It remains unclear however, if he will make Nigeria’s squad to Libreville for the February 20 All Africa Games qualifier against Gabon, as sl10.ng can confirm that the player will only be with the Dream Team for less than a week.

“He (Iwobi) is here with us at the moment, as he arrived this morning (Wednesday), but he will not stay for long now, he will only be with us for about three or four days before he returns back to England,” spokesperson of the Nigerian team, Timi Ebikagboro confirmed to sl10.ng.

The 18-year is a nephew to former Nigeria and Bolton Wanderers captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, and is highly revered at the Emirates by Arsene Wenger.

The player, who was born in Lagos, has already signed professional terms with Arsenal. He is still eligible for both England and Nigeria.

Arsenal's Iwobi: I Was Told To Play For England But I Chose Nigeria

Dream Team VI invitee, Alex Iwobi has revealed that his English club, Arsenal wanted him to choose England ahead of Nigeria, but has opted to don the Green and White colours of Nigeria.

The Arsenal U21 captain arrived the Nigeria U23 camp on Wednesday and has already expressed excitement at being with the team.

He however claims that he was told to feature for England, but says he has chosen to play for ‘the homeland’.

“They (Arsenal) want me to focus on England but they wanted me to try out Nigeria also and see what will come up this week.

“It’s my country and I have to work hard to take this chance and I have to show that I can represent the home land,” he told sl10.ng.

The 18-year old already has a professional contract with the Gunners and has been featured on the bench severally for the first team, but is yet to make his full debut for the former English champions.

And despite preferring to play for Nigeria over England, and despite training with the Nigerian U23 team at the moment, it is highly unlikely that he will be available for Nigeria’s 2015 All Africa Games qualifier against Gabon on February 20, as he’s expected back in London in the next few days.
