Arsenal's Alex Iwobi Hoping To Make Competitive Debut Against Zambia

The Nigeria Football Federation has started pressing the right buttons with respect to Arsenal under 21 skipper Alex Iwobi, donning the jersey of their Olympic National Team in the near future.

If we are to put the cart before the horse, the attacking midfielder could play his first game for the Dream Team against Zambia in a month's time in the return leg of the All Africa Games qualifiers.

Emma Okocha, a retired Nigeria international and representative of Alex Iwobi, has been in contact with his nephew, and he's optimistic that the paperwork necessary for his international switch to be official will be completed on or before the next three weeks.

''Alex Iwobi has not been able to get the clearance from Fifa yet. It should be ready in the next two or three weeks,'' Emma Okocha told SL10.ng.

''He has applied for a one time switch. The game against Gabon is out of it, but subsequent games he'll be able to play.''

It has been claimed that ex Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha influenced Iwobi's decision to play for Nigeria instead of England, but Emma Okocha has a different opinion.

''Nobody decided for him. He likes the atmosphere, he likes Nigeria. He was with them in Gabon.

''As soon as he gets the clearance from Fifa, he will come down for the next game,'' Emma Okocha stressed.

For now, Alex Iwobi is still on the books of the English Football Association, but the NFF have disclosed that he'll be invited for the friendly against Bolivia, and they are on the right path even if approval is not gotten from Fifa before March 26.

Since the match is unofficial, the youngster is permitted to turn out for the Super Eagles.

Fantastic news. Iwobi's potential is huge and having him as our player will be interesting.

When Is Emma Okocha going to coach a National side? I always thought he would make a great coach.

Oduduwa, Ajayi Fires Dream Team VI To Next Round

All Africa Games Qualifier

Result: Dream Team VI 2-0 Gabon (6-1 on aggregate)

Date: 07 March 2015

Nigeria took a step to qualifying for the 11th All African Games with a second leg 2-0 win over Gabon thanks to goals from Segun Oduduwa and Ajayi Junior.

In a tie that pitted two sides with some bright young talents, Dream Team VI completed a double over the Gabonese in front of their fans Abuja National Stadium.

The first leg tie in Libreville ended 4-1 in favour of Nigeria.

Samson Siasia’s wards could not find a way through the defence of the Gabon team in the first period.

The hosts took the lead on 68 minutes when Segun Oduduwa struck from 27 yards.

It was a moment that came to define a rather sloppy display from both sides, and Nigeria in particular will look back on a day that some of their key players failed to shine.

Indeed the crowd had to wait until late in the game to see another goal from their darling team.

Junior Ajayi added the second two minutes from time for Samson Siasia’s team.

The result means a 6-1 aggregate win for the Dream Team, and the first leg of the final qualifying round against Zambia will also take place at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday 21st March.

How they lined up:

Dream Team VI XI: Daniel, Obanor, Oduduwa, Amuzie, Sincere, Azubuike, Godwin, Tiongoli, Etebo, Ajayi, Onyekachi

Gabon XI: Boussogou, Angue, Biteghe, Meye, Aubyang, Edzang, Boutitou, Mbingui, Akame, Mbouogho, Lipingue

Charlton's Onaiwu Dubbed 'The Next Enyeama' To Train With Nigeria

Nigeria's Olympic National Team coach, Samson Siasia, has invited Charlton Athletic wonder kid Edward Ogbebor-Onaiwu to a training camp in Abuja ahead of the All Africa Games qualifiers against Zambia.

Still only 14, the glovesman is proud of receiving this call up from the Nigeria Football Federation, and has promised to win the confidence of the coach during the screening exercise.

''I feel great getting this invitation, most of all I feel proud of myself and I thank God most of all, and my parents. Without them, I will be nowhere,'' a delighted Ogbebor-Onaiwu said to SL10.ng.

''I will just keep working hard and who knows what can happen. I have not had any contact with the English FA yet.

''The invitation was sent by the Nigeria Football Federation on Monday. The email was sent to my mum and the chief scout at Charlton Athletic Football Club.''

Despite the late notice, the ex-Crystal Palace youth - teamer, whose playing style has drawn comparisons to Vincent Enyeama, has vowed to honor the invitation.

''The club has to decide when I'll leave. Nigeria wants me in camp by the 10th, which is today. If I'm permitted to go, I should be in camp by 15th, hopefully.

''Definitely, I am interested in coming, it is my home country. The qualities I am bringing to the team are that I am a great shot-stopper.

''I am very vocal. The Nigerian goalkeeper I look up to is Vincent Enyeama. He's very vocal and can keep you in the game,'' Ogbebor-Onaiwu added.

The highly - rated goalie will be the youngest ever player to feature for Nigeria's Under 23 side if he makes his international debut against Zambia.

Siasia Says Players Are Responding To Corrections

Dream Team VI coach, Samson Siasia says his players are responding positively to the corrections being made after they struggled to a 2-0 win over Gabon last weekend in an All Africa Games qualifier.

The Nigerian U23’s struggled all through but scored two late goals to scale through 6-1 on aggregate, which forced Siasia to admit that they needed to improve.

One week since that game, Siasia says the players are coming around to understanding what he and Nigerians expects of them.

“I said we were going to improve after that game against Gabon and I’m happy that the boys have shown signs that they can play for this country.

“They probably didn’t understand what it means to represent Nigeria, but we have been making corrections and they have been responding.

“It will definitely be a better team when next we play, we just need more support of the fans and patience as well, and we will get there.”

The Dream Team will play the Zambian U23 team in the final round of qualifiers for the All Africa Games which is to be hosted by Congo, and Siasia reckons they must improve before the games against the Zambians.

Nigeria will go through if they prevail over two legs against Zambia.

I have heard and read so much of this young wonder kid goal shot stopper. What I heard was not far from the truth..
If the lad isn't good, he would not have gotten an invitation..
Siasia should give him a cap against Zambia even if it's just for 5 minutes..
Come to think of it, he could actually make the AAG team and Olympics..

Hmmmmmm, I can't vouch for Amuneke transparency in managing the u17..
There were calls from the NFF board members that his squad should be disbanded..
He has refused to learn from his predecessor, Manu Garba.

Joseph1013 reported that Coach Amunike is scouting players to add to the select few he trust. I think we should not write him off until his new side play some friendly games.

Although I suggest we play a tough opposition like Spain soon, so we can quickly assess how strong his new side is.

Siasia confident as Dream Team awaits Zambia

Samson Siasia says his U-23 boys will be ready to do the business when they confront Zambia’s U-23 side in an 11th All-Africa Games qualifier in Abuja on Sunday.

The Dream Team pole-axed Gabon’s U-23 team 6-1 on aggregate in the first round and will host the Zambians, who sailed through without kicking a ball following the withdrawal of Madagascar, for a place at the Men’s Football Tournament of the Games coming up in Congo-Brazzaville in July.

“My boys are ready for the Zambians. Our focus is on doing the job here in Abuja on Sunday so that we can then put our feet down in the return leg.

“Our match against Lobi Stars on Saturday helped a lot. We have been able to notice a few places that we need to continue to work on.”

The former Super Eagles’ handler is keen to get his boys into the All-Africa Games as well as the Men’s Football Tournament of the 2016 Olympic Games.

“Of course, we are ambitious. Our first target is the All-Africa Games, and then we start the qualification series for the CAF U-23 Championship where the qualifiers for the Olympic Games would emerge. We have a measure of what we must do to reach these targets.”

Wasteful Dream Team Held By Zambia

A stubborn Zambia U23 side held their Nigerian counterparts to a 0-0 draw in an All-African Games Qualifier first leg clash at the Abuja National Stadium on Sunday.

It was a match that pundits had tipped the Dream Team VI to win, but they rued their complacency in front of goal.

Heading to the final round of the qualifiers, Samson Siasia led team dispatched Gabon 6-1 on aggregate in the first round.

The hosts were let down by their wayward finishing, with Junior Ajayi and Oghenekaro Etebo the major culprits.

Siasia's men saw plenty of possession but they had nothing to show after 90 minutes in Abuja as they wasted excellent chances.

Despite the introduction of Peter Onyekachi there was nothing stopping the visitors from picking a positive result.

Nigeria pushed forward in the opening stages and it was Etebo looking to have an immediate impact, with his overhead kick hitting the woodwork.

Ajayi, who was later hauled off was looking the most likely for the homers and he should have done better, but he scuffed his shot.

After the break the Zambians stuck to their pattern of soaking the pressure and slowly took the game to the hosts.

Nigeria might have sensed an opportunity to claim a win but it was a frustrating game for them.

It was a difficult day for the hosts as the away team held on to deny Nigeria and take a 0-0 draw into next month’s second leg.

England In The Driving Seat To Cap Nigeria Under 23 Invitee Moses Odubajo

Brentford winger Moses Odubajo has been rewarded for an outstanding season with the England under 20s coach, Aidy Boothroyd, handing him a maiden call - up for games against Mexico and the United States.

Born in Greenwich, London, the 21 year old was one of the 47 foreign - based professionals summoned by Nigeria under 23 coach, Samson Siasia, for a training camp in Abuja last December.

The Leyton Orient product missed the Dream Team VI get together because it fell outside Fifa's international match calendar.

And the highly rated starlet has hinted that he would have loved to represent Nigeria ahead of England if they had approached him first.

''It was a real shock as I wasn't expecting it, but it's a real honor to represent your country,'' Odubajo told getwestlondon.co.uk.

'' I'm always delighted to get any kind of recognition. It shows you're doing something right.

''I qualify for both England and Nigeria, and to be honest I would have gone with whichever game me the first opportunity, and I didn't get along to the Nigerian training camp.

''I was really surprised, but now I want to prove I'm good enough to be there. There's no point turning up being nervous though, I have to show I'm comfortable in those surroundings.''

Moses Odubajo has been one of the most consistent players at Brentford this season, with 38 games under his belt in the Championship.

Siasia is not serious. He is totally unprofessional. The U20 world cup starts in 8 weeks time, those boys should be preparing for that not being distracted with U23. Manu Garba and the FA should not allow this. Siasia has been assembling this U23 team since late last year, they played friendlies, super 6, etc. still he cannot come up with a team. The time his friends at the NFF have given him, no other team handler has enjoyed the same. The best they ever gave Keshi was 4 weeks to prepare for the 2013 AFCON. Siasia and Amoo have had over 5 months and they still have NO team.

If I have my way, as soon as the U-20 World Cup is over, I'll hand over the Olympic team to Manu Garba.

Unfortunately, Amaju Pinnick rushed the appointment of the Olympics coach and appointed Siasia. He should have known the Olympics was a big stepping stone for our Flying Eagles team and given Manu Garba the job.

Either way, our current Flying Eagles team will make most of the Olympic squad despite what Siasia is doing. So if Siasia will coach the next Olympics, calling some of them to the Olympic team is not a big problem.

Some would argue though that Pinnick did what had to be done. The U-20 team alone is an enormous task, so asking Manu to manage the U-23 team simultaneously would be almost impossible. For instance, how do you expect him to have played the U-20 AYC finals and the U-23 qualifier against Zambia on the same day?

Right now, the boys should not be distracted. Manu Garba already said he needs an intensive 60-day camp before the World Cup. The tournament starts late May and we're a few days to April. How does Manu get what he demands?

Right now, we should give him all the support.

Siasia Still Hopeful Of AAG Qualification

Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia is still hopeful of making the All Africa Games in Congo, despite their lackluster 0-0 draw in the final qualifying round against Zambia last weekend in Abuja.

The Nigerian U23’s must win, or record a score draw in Lusaka to be certain of a place in Congo and Siasia says he is still very hopeful of his team’s chances.

“Of course I am still hopeful,” he told sl10.ng. “If I wasn’t hopeful, I still wouldn’t be here. It’s a game of football and these things happen and I am sure we will beat them there.

“I mean they came here and got a draw so why are people thinking we can’t get a result there?,” he asked rather rhetorically.

But with the return leg expected to be tougher with the Zambians seemingly holding the advantage, Siasia points to his team’s away form and says they shouldn’t be underrated.

“Since we started this team, we have played better away,” he said. “Against Tunisia, we beat the 3-0 and we beat Gabo 4-1 and these games were played away from home.

“So I don’t see why they should think we are out, because we aren’t,” he stated confidently.

Alampasu Set To Miss Dream Team Camp

Flying Eagles goalkeeper, Dele Alampasu, may not available for the U23’s after he was invited alongside four other of his U20 teammates for the All Africa Games qualifier against Zambia.

Bernard Bulbwa, Musa Mohammed, Taiwo Awoniyi, Mustapha Abdullahi and Alampasu were last week handed call-ups to the Dream Team after their impressive display at the Africa Youth Championship in Senegal where they emerged victorious.

But sl10.ng understands that goalkeeper Alampasu may be unavailable due to persistent hand injury.

“Dele (Alampasu) is worried about it because he thinks it’s a big opportunity for him, to play with the U23’s but he has a minor hand injury.

“It was one of the reasons he didn’t play at the AYC in Senegal even after the first choice goalkeeper was suspended.

“The U20 camp will open soon ahead of the World Cup and the U23 is already here. I just hope he recovers in time,” a top source close to the player told sl10.ng.

It is understood that the Estoril of Portugal new signing had a minor hand injury prior to the Africa Youth Championship in Senegal, but couldn’t shake it off to deputize for first choice Joshua Enaholo when he was red-carded in the 4-1 win over Congo, hence the introduction of Olorunleke Ojo.

The Dream Team are currently camped in Abuja, in preparation for the last round, second leg All Africa Games qualifier against Zambia.

The first leg ended 0-0 in Abuja last weekend.
