When ever I come to nairaland I sometimes come to the religion forum. I like the debates and the topics, I try to contribute whenever I feel I have something significant to say. I try as best as possible not insult anybody because I believe it achieves nothing.

Unfortunately, I can not say the same for a lot of people, especially Muslims.

If I have ever come across a group of people who do not have good etiquette's when holding a debate, I would have to say it is the Muslims all over the world. I don't know wether, it stems from insecurity, or inferiority complex, I feel the only method they use to get there point across is to threaten others who dare to question their religion and polygamist prophet. Unfortunately this problem seems to be consistent with almost ALL groups of Muslims (no names are necessary, I am sure we all know the way they behave - see all the death threats against Salman Rushdie, the Danish Cartoon saga, the destruction in Nigeria that resulted in the cancellation of the Miss World pageant).

It leaves me to think, that there is still so much that Islam does not teach you. You always talk about your Mohammed, but I put it to you that if a great number of you look at his teachings and conclude that he advocated violence and intolerance, you need to jettison your religion and get a better one. At the very least,  I believe a lot of you need to go back to the drawing board.

Now, there is an almost identical thread vilifying christains that was posted on the religion childboard by a muslim almost two weeks ago [See https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=190941.msg3037948#msg3037948]. None of the moderators has seen it fit to delete the thread, lock it or ban the person who started the thread. Let us hope that this thread would be accorded the same respect.

Now, is polygamy something you are against? Where are you from in Africa? Sorry, Nigeria? Even Igbo people can't boast that there is no polygamy in their culture. The Yorubas, which I am from is not always polygamous. And finally, not all the Muslim men are polygamous.

Salman Rushdie even recounted his own statement. How unreal is that? he was like a skiddish guy, not even sure which way is up. If you really want to debate Islam with me or any other muslim, then you try to be humble and respectful as respect begets respect and when you do thatm you would surely be taught all about Islam.

Allah commands Muslims to stand up for themselves in a defensive battle to repel opression. If an enemy attacks,  Muslims are to fight against the enemy until the enemy stops its aggression.

Dayokanu, I learnt that most of you ignorantly lift verses out of context forgetting to read the verse preceding it but here are the verses for clarification.

"Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loves not transgressors. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith. But if they cease, God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevails justice and faith in God; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression" (2:190-193).

We can see from the above that its a defensive war being discussed here when Muslim is being attacked without reason, opressed and not allowing them to practice their faith. When these happen, Muslims are allowed to fight back but even despite their fighting back (Muslims), they are not allowed to trangress limit and should stop fighting once the enemies stop.

The above verse, just like the one you first gave was taken out of context. However, we would the clearer picture by reading the preceding verses:

9v4:If the idol worshipers sign a peace treaty with you, and do not violate it, nor band together with others against you, you shall fulfill your treaty with them until the expiration date. GOD loves the righteous.

9v5: Once the Sacred Months are past, (and they refuse to make peace) you may kill the idol worshipers when you encounter them, punish them, and resist every move they make. If they repent and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), you shall let them go. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

9v6: If one of the idol worshipers sought safe passage with you, you shall grant him safe passage, so that he can hear the word of GOD, then send him back to his place of security. That is because they are people who do not know.

This verse was revealed during a historical period when the small Muslim community had entered into treaties with neighboring tribes (Jewish, Christian, and pagan). Lots of the pagan tribes had violated the terms of their treaty and secretly aiding the enemy attack agaimst the Muslims.

The verse 4 which happens to be before verse 5 instructs the Muslims to continue to honor treaties with anyone who has not since betrayed them and the verse continues that anyone that violated the treaties has declared war and must be fought. Allah instructs that if they repent, establish regular praywers and charity, then open the way for them to go.

[9:123] O you who believe, you shall fight the disbelievers who attack you - let them find you stern - and know that GOD is with the righteous.

The above is just like the others as well. Note the enboldened words therein.

The below verse summarises all that seems uclear to you

What do you mean by christlike?
