Yar'Adua goes on two-week vacation • Indian PM for heart surgery

FROM Monday, President Umaru Yar'Adua will be away from office for two weeks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale said yesterday.

The Nigerian leader, who is believed to be having kidney problems, has often affirmed his fitness for the office, noting that no human being is free from health challenges.

Incidentally, the Head of the Indian government, Prime Minister, Manhoman Singh, will today undergo a heart bypass that may keep him out of work for at least one month.

Yayale, who was silent on why President Yar'Adua was taking the two-week leave, disclosed that Vice President Goodluck Jonathan would attend to all state matters requiring the president’s attention during the period.

It was unclear last night if Yar’Adua would spend the vacation would be spent in Nigeria or abroad.

Last week, a South-African news medium, Businessday, reported that President Yar'Adua would shortly proceed on an eight-week medical vacation and that ministers were rushing to have important files approved by him before the trip.

However, Yar’Adua’s spokesman, Olusegun Adeniyi, in a text response to enquiries from the Saturday Compass described the South African medium as “irresponsible” and dared it to publish it.

Yar'Adua's trip to Saudi Arabia for the lesser hajj, Umrah, last year had generated controversy with several reports claiming that he underwent surgical operations. On his return, the president brushed all speculations aside and carried on with state duties without offering explanations to the citizens about his long stay in the Holy land.

Prime Minister Singh will undergo the surgery that is expected to side line him for up to one month following an angiography performed on him on Wednesday. This has forced the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to defer his maiden visit to India from January 28, in view of the present situation with the health of his host.

In the absence of Singh, the Indian External Affairs Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, who is the most senior member of the cabinet, is likely to officiate at Monday’s Republic Day parade and will deputise for him.

Angiography or arteriography is a medical imaging technique used to visualise the inside, or lumen, of blood vessels and organs of the body, with particular interest in the arteries, veins and the heart chambers.

Yesterday’s decision for the President to have the heart operation was taken by his team of doctors after he was readmitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi

This is no breaking news,we knew this since last year

i think we should just halt all this nagging because it's going to lead us to nowhere, and we must accept the fact that this man has done much for the country and still willing to do more so why can't we give him hands to make sure that things go smoothly, besides that we all know that this man is sick and that he could need a leave for a medical attention or just to have a rest so it doesn't mean we should start humiliating or saying bad words against him . that all i have for you.

This is one of the flaws of our constitution. Any candidate aspiring for the highest office in the land should be compelled to prove to the people that he is healthy enough for the post and then let the people make up their mind. If this had been the case, this guy would have had to withdraw his candidacy. But then knowing Nigeria, they would have gotten one wuruwuru doctor declare him fit only to tell us he developed this and that a day after election.

Stupid, myopic, ignorant people - is it a crime for the President of a nation to go on two weks annual leave? It happens everywhere, in America, Britain, France, etc - is it a crime for the President to go on leave, what is wrong with Nigerians?

i really dnt know why african leaders will not resign when they know they not fit to carry on. its very obvious this man isnt feeling too well and he cant discharge his responsibilities in his condition. i bet some bad advisers must be urging him on, like his wife.

the man that forced yar adua on us spent almost his first four years on air. he was ruling nigeria from different airspaces traveling from one country to another and nobody took that to be a breaking news.
