I know Rauf aregbesola hospital very well, it is a primary health centre. They don't handle any case more than normal uncomplicated delivery. I wonder how this educated man registered his wife in only a primary health centre. He should have at least registered her in another private hospital. You don't even present early..she got there after she must have been in labour overnight. Forget the labour started by 5 am story. Moreso, the nurses were persistent early enough in informing him they couldnt handle it but he should go to igando but rather he kept making trouble wasting precious time. There are several good private hospital at egbeda but he kept telling them a hospital couldn't be that big without a doctor. The nurses under pressure were forced to do what they could not do thereby wasting more time. By the time he agreed to go he was asking for referral note in emergency. That there was no doctor on duty was administrative....a health centre is primarily run by CHEWS under the supervision of a doctor who may not be available 24 hrs except corpers. so he went to health centre blaming the nurses who rightly told him it was beyond them. I am not saying our health system is not rotten but some people make trouble at the wrong time. You will save your wife first then come back to make trouble. RIP and my condolences

The woman had post-partum haemorrhage.

In that case...you first put her on some IV meds....and if they do not work....you pack the womb with gauze...and if that does not work....you do an emergency hysterectomy (remove the womb).

And that requires an obstetric doctor...something which i suspect my colleague the doctor there is not......

If you can't do it....refer.

According to the story, the referral note didn't come until the husband made a scene. Took our dear doctor that long. Why? Yet the Nurses are to be sacrificed on account of the doctor's ineptitude and snail pace response. Typical!

. DEMON, WHAT HAS BUHARI GOT TO WITH THIS? You demonic false accuser of the brethren. You are as demonic as the nurses that caused the preventable death of this poor mother and her child. All the demonic people in Nigerian hospitals don't fear God. And our churches can take care of situations like this emergency by opening a maternity in every church. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) can have a maternity in every parish. Churches must rise up to the challenge of protecting and saving lives, because cultists are now working in both public and private clinics and hospitals. And many political administrators are also evil cultists, but using many popular churches as camouflage. It is time to investigate the character of the new Governor of Lagos State to find out his true nature in view of what is now going on in Lagos. The immediate past Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola is a God fearing man. But the new Governor is attracting demonic characters manifesting now since May 29.

Damn! This was almost my case but I thank God. Took my wife to Good Specialist hospital in Enugu. The hospital has two separate buildings. One for emergency cases and the other for maternity. The doctor and nurses wia in the emergency building and they abandoned my wife and I at the reception in the maternity building. Funny enough, it was a female doctor that was on duty.
A mid wife came and checked my wife and said she was 6cm dilated. Next thing, she said she has closed for the day and that another nurse would be coming to join us. I waited and waited for the nurse to come, my wife was wriggling and screaming in pains. At a point, I had to go to the next building to fetch the Dr. After much persuasion, the female dr joined me to go check on my wife. When we got there, my wife told her that the baby was coming out, the Dr instead of attending to her, started arguing with her that there was nothing coming out and that she was still 6cm as per what the midwife told her. This was like 45mins after oh. While they wia arguing, her pot broke and my wife slumped at the reception. The Dr got confused and started running around not knowing what to do. I got a wheelchair, carried my wife from the floor and wheeled her into the labor ward. Still carried her and placed her on labor bed. I calmed her down, held her legs apart and encouraged her to push while the Dr was still busy running around.
If I was not there, I wonder what would have happened. Initially, I didn't want to come back cos I Thot I had everything arranged for her. God should help our hospitals, doctors and nurses.

Na wao! What happened to basic rubbing up contractions, and doing a basic VE to look for any possible lacerations and suturing b4 all these your packing and hysterectomy.
Classical "hyperphalooting" stuff when the basics have not been done.
Empathy from those on duty and doing the basics their training required cud have gone a long way.
They also appeared to have neglected the newborn while trying to now attend to the woman and the baby who most likely died from hypoxia too cud have been saved by basic suctioning and resuscitation.
Why not passing definitive judgement, its obvious that a lot that was supposed to have been done wasn't done, no matter what d final outcome wud have been.

It has been a while since i did obsteric care....memory slip....

But....anyways...I think it had gone beyond mere rubbing up contractions AND ve.

Something tells me the case was far more serious.....and that we have not heard the whole tale.

I am interested in knowing what happened before 5 am.

And on newborn resuscitation.....most small health centres do not have the basic equipment.

I understood your comment. I only wanted you to be less vague so the individual who I initially quoted would realize that the nurses are not to be entirely blamed. Coming from a doctor's point of view, maybe said individual will go easy on the nurses.

Indeed it's now a subject of discuss as to whether d lady wud have lived, but with the sheer negligence and ineptitude showed by personnel in d 2hospitals she was rushed to, the husband has a good case to make that they were responsible for the deaths.
These are 2 lives gone for God's sake and d minimum is a thorough medical investigation be done.
By d way,u incorrectly said she didn't attend anc while driving husband said it was specifically for the reason of her having been regular with her anc in one of d hospitals that he took her there, neglecting closer hospitals.

For someone who has walked in the shoes of the unfortunate husband i can relate to his ordeal. Majority of Nigerians, whatever their profession, nurse, police, bus conductor, Senator, kalu, ebi, tunde, audu; rich, poor, notherner, westerner, easterner, southerner, have no regard for human life beyond theirs and maybe their immediate family. My thoughts and sympathies go to the husband who has lost a wife, the child who has lost a mother, not forgetting the family who have lost a dear member. Perhaps the gentleman is one of those who for incredible reasons believe in Nigeria. There is nothing wrong with that, however, life is hard where there are no alternatives. Nigeria today and maybe the next ten years offers little to no positive alternative. Some of us can blame the husband, blame the government, yet, realistically, what options did he have: public government hospitals are a waste, private hospitals perhaps have a nicer environment, they are more or less about the money. This blatant disregard for human life will continue to cripple that nation regardless of what ethnic group or party is in power. Until this value for life is consciously and actively promoted, Nigeria will only see brilliant projects take one step forward fifty steps backward.

Too sad, too bad and painful. . RIP to the dead. This is quite avoidable.

That said, the distance from Egbeda to Igando is like 10minutes especially around 5am, when the traffic is still less. Why not drive down to Igando general hospital immediately.... why taking chances...

Even waiting at home till the water break is enough risk already, As for the justice, no amount of justice will bring the dead back.

Exactly...just behind this hospital are two standard private hospitals and the husband should have left the wicked nurses.

May God console him.
