After Awole's rejection, Afonja, now master of Illorin, invited an itinerant Fulani scholar of Islam called Alim al-Salih into his ranks. By doing this, he hoped to secure the support of Yoruba Muslims (mainly slaves taking care of the Empire's horses) and volunteers from the Hausa-Fulani north in keeping Ilorin independent. Torn by internal struggle, Oyo could not defend itself against the Fulani. Oyo-Ile was razed by the Fulani Empire in 1835 and the Oyo Empire collapsed in 1836. To this day, the Illorin traditional ruler is an emir, whereas in the rest of Yoruba towns the kings are called oba or baale (Baale or Baba Onile meaning "father of the land" or "lord of the land"wink.

most of oyos miliary was in illorin!!!

Looool! The army of the sokoto caliphate consisted of both hausas and fulanis dumbo! Youre not shameless talking about how we forced you to resettle? You ran like you always do, like cowards!!! And if I had wanted to be identified as Fulani, son't you think I would have called myself that or something? Mor.on!

But you're yet to tell me an instance where your ancestors even attempted to set foot in Hausa land!

How does Usman Dan Fodio, a cleric, rise up against city states, seven city states to be sure, and sack the sitting Hausa kings one after the other until he has overan the length and breadth of your entire empire?

Wtf were your Hausa kings doing allowing a cleric to snatch seven thrones and its crowns from their grips?

If a cleric could do that much damage to your land just imagine what Yoruba ancestors would do if they stepped foot on your land. Beside, did you not read Muhammad Bello narrating the natural beauties and aesthetic values of Yorubaland? Why should my ancestors give that up to go into desert?
Get sense!

Dan Fodio was a mere cleric but his lieutenants were battle-tested soldiers. Dan Fodio fought against Gobir, Zamfara, Kebbi and Katsina while other Mallams fought against the other Hausa sarautar.
Particular circumstances at that time enabled the victory of the Fodiawa.

Hausa states were never united and were known to wage wars between each other. Some hausa states like kano actually preffered trade and relied on states like katsina for protection (besides the fact that katsina and kano were at a time competing for dominance in west africa with each other) . Katsina and Gobir, the power houses in terms of war were fighting each other (It was Gobir that broke katsinas status as the leading commercial hausa state, at a time katsina replaced timbuktu as center for islamic studies). And dont even get me with zazzau and how they were fighting everyone. When you say 7 hausa states, it really doesn't tell the whole story.

A cleric with the lower class hausa peasants behind him and significant number of trained fula warriors. He never advertised it as a fula vs hausa war, rather an islamic war, i dont think he would have succeeded otherwise. Besides, people tend to underestimate the number of fulas in and around hausa land, even today and fulas are extremely mobile and resilient. They never stood a chance.

Thats what an ideology can do.
