That pressing is the "chest pressure" symptom and simply part of sleep paralysis alongside being "awake, fear, immobility, awareness of surrounding, feeling presence of other, breathing diffculty, etc".

The most likely reason is that the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase of your sleep cycle is disturbed. REM is a deep phase of sleep in which your brain renders your muscles paralyzed. This is so because it is the phase in which you dream. If your muscles were not paralyzed you could act out the dream experience. Like getting up from bed and running and banging into the wall or run into a road with busy traffic!

If that REM phase is interrupted abruptly and your brain has not freed the muscles from paralysis, you get that experience of being "pressed".

My deduction from simple anatomy/physiology is that most likely your breathing muscles also undergo a slight paralysis but good enough to enable you breath while asleep. But a rapid need to breath faster in that state of fear causes that feeling of dread when you cannot breath as fast as you would like. I stand to be corrected.

Sorry I do not know if I responded to this before. I can only hazard a guess. Nightmare is just an unpleasant dream. If you were lazying in a sun lounger in the Caribbean with Nikki Minaj next to you, sipping cocktail, beautiful blue sea/sky as far as the eyes can see, it won't be a nightmare, would it?

In such a situation you won't wake up trying to fight or runaway. You will just gradually peacefully wake up or even if interrupted, you won't be in a fighting/aggressive mood.

Witches, if they exist, get a lot more credit than they are actualy capable of.

Therefore situations in which we wake up from a nightmare and cannot act out our fear due to being momentarily incapacitated ("pressed down" ) become a much more vivid experience. Whereas we often quickly forget sweet dreams.

OP, you didnt evaluate on what you mean by "pressing" at night, do you mean "sleep paralysis", if it is that, science have explained what sleep paralysis is. It's not a witch-craft, some africans still believe in Superstitions. What a pity.

All what you need when in sleep paralysis activity is distraction to fully wake up(there are many technique), if you call on Jesus Christ or Muhammad or Allah or Satan or Santa Claus, you will surely wake because you have distracted yourself from sleep paralysis. If you have sleep paralysis just call on santa claus, it will work!

There is nothing witch-craft about it, they were just Superstitions made up by ignorant troglodyte men in old days.

Easy to say all this when u hvnt experienced it.
