A 60-year-old man, Gabriel Ayeni, has prayed a Grade ‘A’ customary court sitting in Ojo, Lagos, to end his 40-year-old marriage because his wife is allegedly involved in diabolical practices. “She is responsible for my misfortune. I am fighting a spiritual battle; I am no longer growing financially and my wealth is depreciating, I suspect my wife to be responsible for them”, the man lamented before the court.

The latest attempt is the second time he would be seeking a divorce from his wife, Mrs Olatutu Ayeni.

Ayeni first came before the court seeking a divorce in 2005 and asking that his 35 year old son should leave his house over truancy. He accused his son of once arresting him after picking up a quarrel with him. He was however persuaded off the plan.

The judge later ruled that he should give his wife the sum of N50, 000 to start up a business and to rent a good accommodation. But the wife asked that the man should allow her stay in one of the houses located at Obadare area of Igando, Lagos.

However, when the two parties appeared before the customary court on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, the court asked Ayeni whether he had met with the N100, 000 condition given to him and he confirmed but the wife denied saying the money he gave her was for a different purpose.

The petitioner is praying the court to ask his son to leave his house and join his mother because according to him, he was giving him and his new wife a lot of problem. He said he was always fighting him. But Segun insisted that he would not leave his father’s house because the house belongs to him, except if the father paid him for the services he rendered while both houses were being constructed. He quantified his services to about N120,000.

However, the judges who were not pleased with Segun’s position told him that since he was above 18 years, staying with his father was no longer his right but a privilege. Consequently, he was advised to go and live with his mother since his father had given his mother the N100,000 as ordered by the court. He was also warned to leave his father’s house or be thrown out by the police.

As for the services he claimed to have rendered to his father during the house construction, the judges told him that he had no evidence and advised him to steer clear of any quarrel between his parents.
