You have to give room for those who feel otherwise though.I actually believe abagworo's definition.

SO very true! Nice analogy.

If it look like an Igbo, talks like an Igbo, then it is probably an Igbo. .

Why should we? They are only playing politics.

If the British didn't come to Alaigbo, there would have eventually been one Igbo clan who took over the region. Most likely from Nnewi or Arochukwu.

Our Igbo identity must be fostered. I hear our language may go extinct. We need to get rid of all these lects like the Chinese did with their language and unite our people under one sovereign culture and language.

United we stand, divided we fall.

We Aro were making inroads into Ngwaland and Ibibioland. Even the Ibibio may have been assimilated into a hybrid Aro-Ibibio culture like what is found Arochukwu.

Where is the consistency in declaring "United we stand, divided we fall" et. al. in some posts, and then turning around and posting a divisive message in the other?

Utter ignorance on this thread from the likes of Eze Uche should be promptly corrected by elders such as RichyBlack, Ezeagu, Eziachi etc.

How can one claim that Opobo is a mix of Igbo and Annang/Ibibio? Since when do Opobo people eat Edikaikong?

It is these kind of uninformed folktales that cause all kind of trouble, for example erroneous claims that Bonny, Okrika and Opobo are Igbo clans who deny their heritage. Since when do Igbo clans divide themselves into war canoe houses?

All the unfounded allegations are as laughable as claims that Ikwerre lands extend to the Atlantic, when not a single Ikwerre man has been caught fishing there.

Lets be judicious in our research, not all this dem say dem say that only causes trouble between us.

Let us humor mischief makers like ibine by replying their post:

1.Opobo was founded by an igbo man from amaigbo, imo state.his name was jubo juboha. You may know him as jaja the first.

2. The first recognized Igbo dialect was Bonny Igbo. This was the language spoken by the Igbos of Bonny. Please google it right now.

3. The Koniju, the ruling part of Okirika are Igbos as opposed to the other part which is Ijaw.the last King of Okirika,what was his name Ogan, an Imo name.

I know you know these facts and are propelled by jealousy of the Igbo.

This is an Opobo Indigene.

here are the facts,

We do not speak Ijaw, our Language is Ibani, although we are classed as Ijaw. Our Original language sounds like Kalabari.

We are not igbos and our Language is not igbo. We speak igbo due to centuries of slave trade,  as our waters were used for shipping of slaves and export trade such as palm oil. Jaja was actively involved in this trade,

Our first King (Jaja) was igbo and was a slave in bonny before he departed with some of original Ibani cheifs and they formed Opobo. My great- grand-father was one of these chiefs,

The flooding of igbo slaves on our land had caused the gradual receeding of our original language, Ibani. Bonny is our ancestral route.

our brothers in Finima speak prestine Ibani.

Efforts have begun to re-introduce the Ibani Language,

That is from an old thread on NL. Only one house in Opobo is Igbo due to Jaja. It is wrong to insist all of Opobo is Igbo because the founder is Igbo. Did he only take ex-Igbo slaves from Bonny to Opobo? It is too easy to say ah if the King is Igbo, then the entire village is Igbo even though the said King had taken up 'Bonny  citizenship'. Since Bonny people are Igbos just like Nigerians are Brits because they speak English can you please tell us the meaning of the following Bonny Igbo names

Idamiebi , Sokonte, Erewari, Tumini . . . .

I know you will probably ridicule this because the creeks of RV state has been seen by Igbo nationalists as a prized possession and useful in the eventuality of an Igbo country. This post is to help the passive readers of this thread learn the truth.

Re: The True Extent Of Alaigbo (Igboland) by Abagworo(m): 9:44am On Aug 21, 2010
Bonny was founded by an ngwa man known as alagbanye before he was joined by ijaws from brass who trace their root to bini.okrika was founded by a mix of igbo and ijaw.evidences exist till this day.ubani remains an ngwa word and bonny people actually call themselves umu-ubani.there is however no doubt of ijaw mix and presence.okrika was founded as a trading post by igbos and ijaws.igbos have never asked okrika ijaws to join the igbo nation because they are now ijaw with igbo blood.there are some igbos with ijaw blood too.there are also igbos from bini and igala.boundary of igbo speakers stops at eleme,amadiama,old gra,mile one in eastern rivers.on the otherside it stops at buguma,engenni and orasi river.the places around iwofe,ogbogoro and emohua all terminate at the river bounding them with kalabari ijaws.

I have several Opobo indigenes as friends including members of the Jaja Royal Family. When asked why they speak Igbo and not Ibani, they normaly answer 'nnem ezim nnam ezim, meaning my mum didn't teach me ,neigther did my father.
How did Opobo start. Mazi Juboha (Jubaoha) a.k.a Jaja fought with his Igbo ark rival Oko Jumbo. Jumbo's camp defeated Jaja.jaja left bonny with his own followers,mainly igbos like him and some ijaw founded opobo. Will you deny that? I had several members of the jumbo family of bonny as clasmates and I can tell you this,there ancestor bu onye Igbo. Most people of bonny opobo(perhapse including you are igbo because the early kings graded their wealth based on how many Igbos worked for them. Am I lying? The only ijaw family I know of for now in bonny is the pepple family.

@Owl and Ibime, I do not know why Igbo scares life out of you guys.  Be rest assured that you are safe. Ndigbo do not claim other peoples territories. The map of Igboland which the original poster pasted did not include Okrika, Bonny and Opobo. What some nairalanders argue here is that there are traces of Igboness in Okrika, Bonny and Opobo. Ibime you at one time agreed to that fact, you even claimed that your forefathers bore the name ''Uwakwe''.
The Oha na eze Ndi Igbo guides us through whom we are. It has never at anytime invited Okrika people to join Ohanaeze. So why the panic. There are some communities in cross River state that speak Igbo from Abakiliki to Ogoja, yet we know they are not Igbo and have never been invited to join the Igbo cultural organisation.
The map by the original poster included some areas in Rivers state that are Igbo such as Omuma, Etche, Diobu, Ahoada east and west, Obigbo and ONELGA. This is an established fact.

We dont deny our heritage, but we do take offence when some ignorant young people claim Opubo, Wakirike and Ibani as some Igbo clan who deny themselves. For example, we never call Ndoki people Ijaw, although many of them migrated from Okrika and Opobo. Their culture is fully Igbo now, and that makes them Igbo.

Im referring to someone who erroneously claimed that Igboland stretches to Bonny Island, but that Bonny deny their Igboness. Its better to clarify these things for the dem say dem say brigade.

If you talk like an Igbo, walk like an Igbo, look like an Igbo, then you are an Igbo. Don't know why people would want a minority status? Fewer numbers do not equal power. Joining with the wider Igbo is beneficial. You can still have your clan in the wider Igbo. I am proof of that. As an Aro man with Ibibio roots, my people choose to be Igbo because this is our bloodline, but we know we have Ibibio roots.
Re: The True Extent Of Alaigbo (Igboland) by Dede1(m): 2:26pm On Aug 21, 2010
Let me thank all the Igbo chaps and Igbo/Ijo for their wide and intelligent contribution to the extent of Alaigbo. Igbo land stretches from Abeomega to Igwe Ocha (Port Harcourt) and Igwe Nga (Opobo). Also, from Igbineke and Agbor to Gakem and Ikom

@Onlytruth

Nnewi can not be compared to Aba Urban talk less Ngwa land. Even baring Ukwa, Ngwa land is comparable to anything from Onitsha to Ihiala.

@Abagworo

Ariaria Market is seated in the former Obioma Ngwa LGA and never bordered by Eberi. Eberi Omuma is bordered by Ogwe, Owaza, Ihie and Obegu.

I also do not totally agree with you about people who deny their ancestry. Nigeria is teetering toward the area of greater disorder and it is proper that folks identify themselves properly to avoid unnecessary waste of lives and energy. I remembered when people of Akiriaka, near Ohanku in Ndoki, wanted to join their kinsmen in the then Imo State, now Abia State which led to community riot between Akrirka and Annang. I know what led the people of Annang to sue for peace; it was not the strength of small Akirika people but the mobilaztion of youths from all Igbo land especially form Ukwa, Ngwa and others.

@Ibime

You must understand that word, Bonny, is neither Igbo nor Ijo but a bastardized English word for Ubani. Ubani was outpost for Ngwa people before arrival of Europeans with the “Boat People”.

The history of Opobo is a mixed basket. Opobo was found by Jaja of Opobo on a piece of land believed to have belonged to Igwe Nga and Ikot Abak (Abasi). However, I must say Ichie Obomanu has reiterated his being Igbo on several occasions and he is also a member of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo. Chief Emma Aguma is Igbo of Ikwerre and one of the founding fathers of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo. There are also Okirika people who claim Igbo and few claims Igbo/Ijo yet some claim Ijo.

@Andre Uweh

You are always on the spot with correct facts and there is no form of wavering from you.
