Importers of all this product of which all this factory springing up in Nigeria will never be happy. Because the more we manufacture their IMPORTED products locally the more unhappy they become. But on the long run is better for Nigeria. Importers better look inward especially for product that can be manufactured locally.
ahah U r very funny, what prevents them from becoming exporters and major distributors? if doe anything the benefit more. They are getting their product without applying 4 visas!

Let's try to be patriotic. This is a welcome development. I am pretty sure many people will be employed directly and indirectly via this factory.

God bless Ayade , at least for starting and completing this project no matter how small it seems to be. It is better than those that are bragging about Enyimba Economic City thinking that Abians have forgotten Obuaku city project .

Why Are You So Critical In Your Mind That You Never See Anything Good In What Others Do? A Project The FG Promised But Could Not Deliver Has Just Been Commisioned By A Single State. Moreso, There Are Countries Making Good Money From Its Exportation. I Just Pray You Will Believe In It To Share From The Multiplier Effects. This Is How The Good Of The Land Will Start...

There are ways to protect our industries. We can't keep importing to grow other economies while our people remain unemployed and poor. That's how our textile industry which used to be vibrant was killed. Some other nations deliberately make policies to favor the masses, not just a few rich businessmen whose added value only resonates in their pockets with little or no impact on the community.
Trailers and containers everywhere, yet, our people are wallowing in poverty.

that small thing called toothpick requires almost 10 machines to produce one stick, it's not a business that makes profit easy hence people shy away from it.U need xtreem low overhead to make it work.
Really? Do you have experience in toothpick manufacturing? Because I have been dreaming of opening a toothpick plant.

Importing has never been the problem cos anyhow you look at it,you got to import, China import 100 times the total volume of what we as Nigerians import. You made mentions of ways to protect the Nigerian Industries well care to name one? I know how the Uk protect its industries, I bet you any money the Nigerian FG would never do that.

My brother, i think its a positive move. I observed my youth service in that state 2015/2016 and i can tell you that state have what it takes to be a driving force when it comes to productivity. I had the privilege of witnessing the creative process of making organic chewing stick ,and if they could do that with less hassle, why can't they venture into chewing stick supply ? We all know that product is on our import list.

Raw materials for toothpick
Is it made of gold? We have all the materials needed here in Nigeria
Guy think before you post, and stop showing how unlearned you are!

You may have a point, but ikorodureporta also has a valid point. Raw materials usually need to be prepped. You may find that the bamboo (or timber) needs to be a certain type or treated with a certain chemical in order to be workable in the machines. With Nigerian factor, it might even be cheaper to import the raw material than to source it locally. I hope that's not the case, but there you are.

Interesting. I have been seeing some cheap, small made in China machines. That couldn't cost more than a few millions. I thought those would work. Perhaps the quality of the toothpicks peosuced may not be so high.

One step forward, two steps backward. undecided

Instead of de-forestation to provide raw materials, they should have gone into making plastic toothpicks using our abundant petrochemicals.

You are very STUPID for asking that question.

So you prefer that we continue IMPORTING toothpicks for millions of dollars per annum rather than actually producing them here in Nigeria?

Re: Ben Ayade Commissions Toothpick Factory In Cross River State by Rossikki: 2:09am On Mar 05, 2019
By right the govt should not even be involved in setting up a toothpick factory, if not for LAZY, IMPORT-ORIENTED NIGERIANS, too full of inferiority complex to manufacture anything on their own at home.

Go to China. Most of what we import from there are made in mom-and-pop 'factories' in residential backyards of ordinary people. Handbags, shoes, toys, and yes, toothpicks.

In Nigeria, nobody wants to manufacture anything unless they have millions of dollars to start a huge factory. That's why govt has to stoop low to get involved in low-intensity manufacturing involving toothpicks.
