I think the VC should be blamed for this. ever since this man took over the mantle of leadership, uniben has been in shambles. I hid my face in shame anytime I'm asked where I'm schooling. it's so pathetic that a big school like uniben cannot afford to pay NEPA bill up until when NEPA even disconnected the school light. shame on whoever is responsible for the current deterioration of the University's reputation.

It's so sad to see that the first University in Black Africa to start Optometry is the same University lacking the necessary facilities to train her students. For 46 years no progress. What a PITY.

For 4 years, I kept going there periodically. Even the glasses they gave me did not feel right. I was still seeing double and jagged lines. It was after I graduated and went to Lagos island to cut glasses because someone said it was cheap there that one guy took me to one mushroom place on broad Street for 300 naira and the mallam there diagnosed I had astigmatism, hence my recurrent headaches.

The guy prescribed the best ever glasses I had used in my life, headache japa immediately. Those uniben guys need to up their game or be scrapped abeg

Optometry Uniben has been in shambles for a very long time now.I stand boldly with the students....All this rubbish must stop.Everything they said is true,they even downplayed some issues.Something must be done.I'm appealing to the departmental and school leadership,NOA,ODORBN,NUC,the federal and state government,all other concerned individuals and parties to please take action towards alleviating the suffering of these students.#optometryUniben

Life became clearer. He now said madam, you have astigmatism in one eye, so your lenses will not be the same then wrote on paper and gave another mallam to take inside Lagos island for them to cut the lenses.

He charged me 300 naira back then .

Everything is possible. Mallams even extract cataract better than ophthalmologists in many cases.

This is not exactly true. Optometrist diagnose and manage refractive error. They are more like physicist than biologists

This is the biggest joke of the buhari era. As at 500l we are able to diagnose and prescribe for patients, be it refractive or pathology. And after seeing the patients, your supervisor (lecturer) must approve before giving the patient. I don't know who you met. Go and ask around about Uniben graduates in the country. Forget about the issue of accreditation, we are still the best in the country.

This is almost 7 years ago. I dunno if they still hang out around there. Abibu Oki street, off broad Street. They have guys that sell glasses and sunshades along the road. Just tell them you want to do recommended glasses. They will ask for your prescription, if you don't have or if it's an old one, over one or two years old they will direct you or take you to go and meet 'doctor' who will do the eye test and give you prescription. Na the mallam be doctor

I returned and he called the attention of the female HOD who checked eye pressure for glaucoma and repeated the tests. She said everything was fine and it's like I have high BP or migraines but it is not eye related. No one considered astigmatism

well, you just made my point, optometry had a more superior and academic origin, that was the only point i was trying to make there, and that origin isn't something to downplay rather something to celebrate, though not in my Nigeria of misinformation and miseducation, only in a backward country like ours would we rate a mostly professional discipline (medicine) over a mostly research discipline (physics)

they assigned a new building besides SLT not yet completed to optometry (well, at least that's what it says on the signboard but you never know what would happen eventually) and it is long overdue if you ask me, I believe there's a low key intercenine warfare amongst the lecturers in that dept stopping them from working with a single purpose and speaking with a single voice as they are busy looking over their respective shoulders wary of each other

Is that what a doctor should do? Is that standard practice? They could have at least told me to ease my pain, or worst look for the money. I would have paid anything for a solution.. It is all in the past. I forgive them
