1. Lol, I love it when I'm able to nudge a person into typing out the point themselves.
That is what I mean by 'an agreement'.

2. Please focus, no where have I stated she's to be blamed alone. This conversation began with you advising men to zip up when the person obviously suffering here is a lady, get it?

When it comes to sex, two people are responsible for the act, but one person is responsible for the stress of being pregnant – hard to digest, but it's what it is whether y'all like to admit it or not.

My elder sister is right now in UPTH for same reason after spending more than 150k and she's left with nothing in her account and the hospital management has detained her for up to a month now after delivery via CS.

To treat her is a choice the hospital made! If they cant, they can stabilise her and refer her to a Govt Hospital but once they made the decision to treat her, then they have taken on responsibility and must be accountable.
How does all the above that you wrote, JUSTIFY KIDNAPPING someone and her baby for 7months?
When did Hospitals become Prisons?

You either dont do or you do properly. undecided

In such emergency situation, the hospital most likely would have been assured of full payment after the surgery.
They also played their role by carrying out the surgery to ensure the mother and baby were hale and hearty, probably without receiving initial payment.

Still a sad situation for the lady and her baby though. Except there are psycho-social reasons the lady is being kept in the hospital, I would suggest the hospital lets her go and count their losses (though such losses which undeniably would be recurrent in such a society like this would affect proper running of the facility and quality of care)

I am trying to see all sides of the story.

I think the hospital should have let her go after a week or thereabout if she wasn't able to come up with the balance. It is Penny wise pound foolish to hold a nursing mother for six months because she did not pay N90k balance.

No family, no father of the baby, no relatives to look for her. Did she fall from heaven? How did she gather N160k considering she obviously wasn't planning for CS?

Or did she beg one of the hospital workers to let her camp there and they twisted the story?

How was she feeling all these months? Having her bath? Caring for the baby? What clothes was she putting on? Her neighbors knew she went to give birth somewhere and did not bother after not seeing her for six months?

We are talking about a mother and child: one of the treasures we value in our society.

There is more to this story.
I also doubted the '7months incaceration'.I know hospitals detain patients who fail to settle their bills but I think in this case there is more to it.

Stop this false generalization about Nigerian men offering fake promises. That's not so. The girl needs great assistance, that should be the number one priority.

saphiere:

1. Are you not in Nigeria? Which hospital will let you go without paying your bills even if you are oil company worker? The article says she is a hairdresser.

2. What if the man responsible had deceived her with fake promises like MOST Nigerian men do? And the poor girl scum to his pressure and fell for his tricks?

There should be an account number for her, things are hard I knw but if u and I can donate 1k each for her just 100 people out of millions of Nigeria's she would be able to go home to take care of her self and her baby and a little something to start over again.i dont understand the essence of bringing this story here when there is no way we could help her

I understand where you are coming from but the truth is they never come back to pay the bills, its the way of getting their money, the fundamental problem is our insincerity as citizens. This happened at a private hospital close to our house recently, they were finally discharged during the lockdown since December last year.

I have even seen this happen at general hospitals in Lagos at the maternal child centers I had my babies but it doesn't even take this long.

After 7 days of discharge ( I doubt its up to 7days anymore) of both mum and baby and you do not settle the bills, the mother is on a sit out ' meaning - a new mother will sit on a chair and carry her baby no bed for both of you and you will be watched by them very closely to prevent you from running away. I thought it was harsh and then I heard cases of mothers running and leaving their babies at the hospital.

They will say bed space is not even enough for patients and someone that is discharged wants to take a bed, you will be given a chair to sit.The mother is always extremely uncomfortable carrying baby overnight but then won't new mothers that have delivered and new babies rest on a bed too? Then after sometime I think social welfare department does come and maybe they waive.

Its always a messy situation, I have seen mothers with CS on sitouts very terrible something to behold, during antenatal the head matron always shout, have money ready don't go and buy naming cloth, have cash at hand you may need end up needing an emergency CS, things can go wrong during a normal delivery , we will tell you to drop anything you have the CS will be done , we will ensure you are treated but you will pay all the bills BEFORE you are go home,

The bitter truth is some people do not even have relatives that can help. Nigeria is hard for a lot of people .

Woo the mata tire me joor.

I don't even know who to blame. May God help us all.

She lives in Egbeda, even if she get rushed into government hospital near Egbeda, the matter for no be like this.
There is nothing special about private hospitals, the best hospitals in Lagos are still the public hospitals.
Igando general hospital, orile Agege general hospital, Isolo general hospital, Ayike house in Ikeja and island maternity are all there and people still allowed private hospitals do nonsense to them.
For those who care to know, Fashola did a good job on those hospitals before he left.

Irrespective of what all of you here are saying, No Hospital has the right to abridge a Patients Right to Freedom, without a valid Court Order!
It is called KIDNAPPING!
I am really fuming right now that a Hospital would do this, even after she has paid #160,000.00!
Look at the gilr that was able to produce that amount of money, does she look like a rich person?
And to think that the matter was reported to the Police and they didnothing? What manner of stupid Policement are those?

IGNORANCE is at play here! Our Hospital owners are taking too much law into their hands of recent and this must be curbed.
The worst the Hospital could do is to come to a written, repayment arrangement with her, which is enforceable at law but to hold her against her will will land that MD in Prison, if he doesnot release her immediately
.
If you hold anyone against their will, it is Kidnapping, at Law, so iffs, no butts.
Even the Police are only allowed "limited time" to hold somebody without charging them to court, usually for simple cases, itis 24hrs otherwise you MUST release them on Bail.
For Capital offences like Murder, you have to charge them to court and the Court will most liley refuse bail and thus remand the accuse in prison pending trial date.

I will be petitioning the Human Rights office at Alausa, Ikeja over this nonsense but how come the NAME of the Hospital is missing in this Report or is it a fake story? shocked angry

The name of the hospital is Mojo in Egbeda.
Probably Moji or the story is as fake as Kim Kardashian's butt.

The medical doctor should not be blamed for any reason whatsoever for detaining the mother and the baby after delivery. If anyone should be blamed, it should be the government.
Atleast he helped deliver the baby successfully through CS operation using the private hospital's resources.

Don’t mind those condemning the hospital and doctor

At least they helped her to deliver it

Heath insurance should be made mandatory. That's all. This will encourage hospitals to take risks on admissions and pressure the citizens to take sensible health related decisions. Subsequently no hospital will admit without insurance.
