I have always find this difficult to understand how 1GB equal 1024MB especially when I buy data, but Google is showing 1000 MB.

Please help,

Is 1GB equal to 1024MB?

Base 2 (1024 bytes)

The kilobyte has traditionally been used to refer to 1024 bytes (2^10 B). The usage of the metric prefix kilo for binary multiples arose as a convenience, because 1024 is approximately 1000.

The binary interpretation of metric prefixes is still prominently used by the Microsoft Windows operating system. Metric prefixes are also used for random-access memory capacity, such as main memory and CPU cache size, due to the prevalent binary addressing of memory.

The binary meaning of the kilobyte for 1024 bytes typically uses the symbol KB, with an uppercase letter K. The B is often omitted in informal use. For example, a processor with 65,536 bytes of cache memory might be said to have "64 K" of cache. In this convention, one thousand and twenty-four kilobytes (1024 KB) is equal to one megabyte (1 MB).

Originally Kb means 1024mb
Soon after scientist realised that rounding it down is beta
Even more mathematically correct since kilo is to the power of3(1000), mega (6)( giga(9) and so on

Hence one 1kb is 1000mb
While 1024 mb and its multiples have been given a much difference name
Kibibyte (KiB)for 1024 rather than kilobyte(KB) and so on
Just that these names haven't caught on with d modern world

Data scientist/computer scientist will still stick to d old 1024 format tho

In terms of memory/storage(in computer sense) measurement

1 gb = 1024 mb

But in terms of internet data for browsing

1gb = 1000mb
Re: Is 1 GB Equal To 1024 MB Or 1000 MB? by Karlifate: 8:42pm On Dec 10, 2020
Well, it's because of the binary number system.

The binary number system has the base 2, and it comprises of zeros (0s) & ones (1s).

When it comes to data storage, transfer & management, the powers of two (2) are used.

Examples:
• 2^1 = 2
• 2^2 = 4
• 2^3 = 8
• 2^4 = 16
• 2^5 = 32
• 2^6 = 64
• 2^7 = 128
• 2^8 = 256
• 2^9 = 512
• 2^10 = 1024
etc.

Literally, 1GB = 1000MB, but the numbering system of 2 raised to power 10 gives 1024, which is closest to 1000MB.

Then, it is assumed as 1GB.
