The writer is contradicting himself. First he said the pastor is being an hypocrite for advising people to have a plan B while preaching faith.

At the same time, the writer said the idea of people “checking out” is not new, and mentioned a 80s advert, if the idea of leaving is not new, why criticize the pastor for saying something everyone else already knows?

The writer said, the pastor is having a privileged mentality, at the same time, he said even unprivileged people are either leaving or plan on leaving if u should check Twitter.

At the end of the day, let everybody do what works for them.

First of all, the writer is a SHE.............

..........Writing from the comfort of the U S A where she is an associate Professor.......

.....Married to an engineer (white man)........

....What did she say about plan B again

That they; the pastors have done successfully in Nigeria. That is why the country has not been burnt down because the church has worked on the minds of the people to be hopeful and put things in the hands of God instead of fighting for their rights.
Very interesting point of view. Where do we draw the line between striving for calm in a sinking ship and rallying the occupants of the ship to fight to save the ship. Do we as christians continue sitting tight, hoping things will get better or do we actually start being the agents of that change we are yearning for?
Pastor Adefarasins view point is interesting in that he is neither asking people to hope nor be the agents of change that Nigrria badly needs. He is instead asking people to have a plan B and run away.

The Kingdom Christians are called to is not of this world and so Christian arent to concern themselves with the worries and insecurities of this world and its government. Also, Christians are not called as "agents of change" in this world - that idea is not scriptural. undecided
So best you leave Christianity out of this talk. undecided

There's nothing contradictory there sir. You are the one who decide not to understand the point the writer is making.

It is hypocritical for a man who has been preaching and teaching about faith and God's omnipotent power to advise people to have 'plan b' of leaving their country for whatever reason. Those of us who have reached certain level of spiritual maturity know messages that come from the spirit of God and I can tell you categorically that the pastor's message didn't come from God's spirit!

The pastor's message betray the fact that he never really believed in all the faith teachings he has been teaching, neither does he has real faith in the power of God.

On your third paragraph, the writer believing that the pastor has a privileged mentality doesn't contradict the fact that unprivileged people have been leaving the country in search of greener pastures. You are the one confusing yourself as a result of your unwillingness to read with an open, unbiased mind.

Bro its a vicious cycle. The people who with their ingenuity and foreign education, are supossed ro fix the country, are the ones that are leaving enmass! Who then do we expect to fix the country? Angels? Of course its the thugs and miscreants that we're leaving behind. I'm not saying i wouldn't leave if i had the chance but I'm convinced that this cycle will break the moment the educated and enlightened people in the country say enough is enough and decide to be selfless and forgo life's pleasures and stay back and fix the country.
The reason we have a clueless person like Buhari in charge is because the more enlightened people have decided to step back, run away and enjoy life more. Evil thrives when the good people stand by and do nothing, in Nigeria's case its Evil thrives when the good and educated run to Canada and the UK. Nigeria will never be built by thugs and miscreants or clueless people like Buhari.
the problem is not that people don't want to fix the country, many people do. The problem is that the country won't even allow you fix her, try and experience frustration, setbacks and even death.

If you are wise enough you would understand what the pastor was talking about this country is so messed up to the point that staying here with the way things are going is almost suicidal. Let's forget about being a pastor or not it's just the plain truth take it or leave it praying and having a plan B are the best. Even the Bible said watch and pray, the word "WATCH" is the plan B

How can you fail to understand such a simple post from Chika?

Let me explain it to you. Below is a summary;

Adefarasin is so wealthy (privileged), he forgets (blind) that not everyone is rich enough to afford his Plan B.

Also, Christianity is all about giving hope to the hopeless. And pastors claim to be custodians of this belief. So, Adefarasin should (by his calling or vocation) be optimistic. Even if others are pessimistic, pastors should naturally be optimistic people.

Many underprivileged people have (and will still) explore Adefarasin's Plan B. But it is always a dangerous plan for underprivileged people because many who have tried to leave the country ended up dying in the Sahara.

The major highlight of Chika's article is that privileges can make one blind to the conditions of other people. Adefarasin spoke about Plan B as though it is a viable plan for many Nigerians.

For many Nigerians who cannot even feed twice a day, how can you tell them to have Plan B? Is it someone who cannot pay house rent of a one-room face-me-I-face-u apartment that will have money for flight tickets? Can such a person even afford bus tickets to Accra?

Many Nigerians who tried to have such a Plan B ended up as slaves in Libya.

Pastor Adefarasin is the founder and lead pastor of the House on the Rock Church, a thriving Pentecostal outfit that emphasizes financial prosperity almost as if it were a requisite for salvation. He is one of Nigeria’s most elegant men, famed for his bespoke Italian-cut suits, flashy automobiles, shiny head and his deep baritone enmeshed in a delightful American accent.

Pastor Adefarasin is “rich”, and he set out to prove his point to his church members at the 5-Star Eko Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos where he held this Sunday’s service.

“I am a billionaire and there is nothing anybody can do about it,” he boasted. “I have coached many billionaires and you know, the pastor of billionaires is a billionaire.”

The preacher of a billionaire can only be a billionaire because a monkey cannot give birth to a goat and a goat cannot follow a baboon.”

“I am a preacher. I am a motivational speaker. I am a TV personality. I am a life coach. You can criticize me or slander me in the pages of newspapers but the blessings are in me and there is nothing anyone can do about it,” he bragged. As a ‘billionaire’, he went ahead to give tips to his vast congregation who apparently are all dreaming of becoming billionaires.

“To become a billionaire, Christians must simply imagine it, ask and realize that money, blessing and favour are already in them. All they need is to ‘work out’ what ‘God has already worked in.’ ”

“Some of you do not see that you are already billionaires but there is a difference between to create and to unveil. God will simply unveil your billions to you as he did to me,” he said to his multi-thousand congregation.

There's a difference between speaking in faith that you're a billionaire and the time phase it takes for it to materialize, what he just did there is to speak it in faith...the pastor of billionaires can only be a billiionaire. Please show me his assets that add up to him being a billionaire then I would agree.

@me
I fully support the writer. If Pst Adefarasin belonged to another vocation other than pastor I will not have issues with his plan B advice. But he is a pastor. A man that people run to when they are hopeless.

As a notable pastor his words are weighty. A single word that comes out of his mouth can make someone you had planned suicide to drop it.

By the grace of God I'm a pastor in one of the large churches around. At the heat of the pandemic in 2020 we were warned that our messages should be focused on hope and salvation.

Recently the Holy Spirit has been directing me along the same line because of the despair in the land. I'm presently running a series on GOD KNOWS - when, how, why, don't quit.

This is what is expected of us. Of course what will you expect from a feel-good pastor.
