They didn't know. They have to do the necessary cleansing rituals although one of the students MUST die that is if the traditional rites of forgiveness of ignorance are carried out. Worse if not carried out, It's also like this in my delta central. When it happened in my town, it was a big python patrolling the communities during festive season and after he finished, the python came to pay homage to the king only for workers to see it in the kings forest and ignorantly killed it, enclosed it in a sack and still foolishly brought it to show the king that they killed a snake that wanted to attack one of his fish ponds. The king was so disappointed because he was expecting the visitor as it usually is during festive season, the guys 3, 2 of them died that week and 1 was hospitalized I think he later died. If you find your self in a community ask about the dos and donts. Don't always be a stupid fanatic of foreign religion killing any animal you see.

Africa and some nonsense beliefs. They should gerrarahere joor. We need to get rid of some of these nonsense beliefs; it sounds moronic, especially in the 21st century.
It's mentally insulting. Try explaining some of these beliefs to educated and well exposed people, & watch how moronic you'll appear. U go be like fool_for their eye.

In as much as Pythons do not naturally attack humans, but not everyone is aware or would just let a python be moving around freely. Those students acted in self defense; the gods should understand. Look at the huge snake sef

I wonder why a chief priest is in a relationship with a python, when we have beautiful girls at Owerri.

*sigh*
Always using negative events to justify their juju. Issues at work site like this happen everyday. They happened before a python was killed; happened after the python was killed and it's still going to happen in future times.
We've also seen several white contractors that kicked away sacrifices dropped at sites, did anything happen to them??

Oga chief priest, the goats, fowl, fish, snail etc that you have been eating and drinking beer after, were they aggressive? Did they harm anybody? So, why did you now kill and even eat them?
If it's forbidden to kill snakes in such community, then you shouldn't let such snakes be wandering about. Get good animal protection program. Have snake catchers available. This is Nigeria, where MOST people are scared of snakes and don't even know which is venomous or not. Me any snake wey I see, I dey murder am straight.

What a load of rubbish!
Respect people's culture when you're there. It's their python, leave it alone..
Simple!

“The python was scary. We were afraid and thought it would attack us after it killed two goats. Those students who killed it acted in self-defence and we didn’t know that it was culturally forbidden to kill a python in Owerri.”

What's the school teaching them then? undecided

This is the first orientation they ought to get before matriculation.

As much as tradition is good but wait which day chief priest go curse the bandits and kidnappers make all die? Otherwise what is the use. Appease the gods warns the students and move on. They are no indigenes so may not have known. Gone are those days people don't leave far from traditional roots. Today is different.

I believe in living in harmony with nature. The python ate two goats. Are they your goats? The FACT is pythons and boa constrictors generally avoid humans and their wahala. If the students had killed a black mamba or spitting cobra nobody would be asking for restitution.
Alvan Ikoku students and management should be good neighbors to ndi Owerri and this involves observing local customs so long as they are not noxious or threaten your right to peaceful coexistence.

How many infrastructural development has the python brought to them and how many armed robbers and kidnapper has the python captured...oya let them take their case to Imo Government house ..since the python held both political and spiritual post.
