following the Second World War, League of Nation mandates were replaced by UN mandates. Dr. E. M. L. Endeley became President of the Cameroon National Federation in 1949. At that time southern Cameroons (including Bakassi peninsula) was administered with Nigeria. Following a dispute within the Eastern House of Assembly in Enugu in May 1953, nine out of thirteen delegates from the Southern Cameroons, who had originally been elected on the platform of the National Council for Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), opted for ‘neutrality’, claiming that they were not Nigerian. Mr. S. T. Muna, the only Southern Cameroonian in the Eastern Executive Council at that time was actually dismissed. This crisis led to the name change from “National Council for Nigeria and the Cameroons”, as the NCNC was then known, to “National Council of Nigerian Citizens.“

During the July 1953 London Constitutional Conference, Endeley, citing fear of “Nigerian domination”, requested the unconditional withdrawal of the Southern Cameroons from the Eastern Region of Nigeria, and its transformation into a separate region of its own in line with its trusteeship status. Britain agreed and implemented separation in 1954, making the Southern Cameroons (including Bakassi peninsula) a semi-autonomous quasi-region of the Nigeria Federation with its own House of Assembly and Executive Council located at Buea. Endeley was called the Leader of Government Business, not Premier, primarily because Southern Cameroons was not yet a full region. Importantly, the Bakassi peninsula which was part of Kamerun/Cameroon since 1913, as inherited in the league of Nations mandate after World War 1, was also excised from co-administration with the eastern region along with the rest of the southern Cameroons at that time. There is no evidence that anyone made an issue of the matter then

In 1955 there was a split in Endeley’s party which was then allied with the Action Group (AG) and John Ngu Foncha emerged as his rival on the platform of the new Kamerun National Democratic Party (KNDP). This party’s goal was complete secession of southern Cameroons from Nigeria and eventual reunification with Francophone Cameroun. Endeley was accused of abandoning his former stance of pro-unification in favor of integration with Nigeria. At about the same time the Union des Populations Camerounaises (UPC), a Bamileke based radical leftist party in Francophone Cameroun led by Felix Moumie was being banned by the French Governor. As they fought a bitter and violent guerrilla war against ruthless French troops, they would often cross over to Bamileke sections of British Cameroons (i.e. “Nigeria”) for sanctuary.

Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by tpia5: 4:16am On Jul 03, 2011
It was against this background that most southern Cameroonians favored self-determination – independent of BOTH Nigeria and Francophone Cameroun. However, conflicting interests on the international scene subverted their political will. The pan-Africanist movement, led by Nkrumah, for example, was opposed to the emergence of small African states. Britain was initially afraid that an allegedly economically unviable “Southern Cameroons” would be an albatross around its taxpayers and thus preferred that it join with large Nigeria next door. Although southern Cameroonian leaders preferred that the plebiscite provide a simple choice between "integration with Nigeria" or "secession and independence", the UN imposed different questions on the electorate. In October 1959, General Assembly Resolution 1352 XIV, composed the choices as follows:

(I) Do you wish to achieve independence by joining the independent Federation of Nigeria?

or

(II) Do you wish to achieve independence by joining the independent Republic of Cameroun?

However, popular opposition to these choices compelled both Foncha and Endeley to request that southern Cameroons simply be granted independence. Initial momentum in this direction and talks in London in November 1960, however, collapsed in acrimony and the UN had its way. In the countdown to the plebiscite, reunification with Francophone Cameroun was marketed by well-funded Francophone groups as a loose union in which the Southern Cameroons would maintain self-rule. The most prominent among these pro-unification forces were elements of the Bamileke tribe who was split by the post-World War 1 partition into British and French territories.

Ahidjo and key elements in the francophone Cameroun bureaucracy were afraid of the effect - on southern Cameroons - of a precedent for secession by supporting Biafra. It was not a secret that southern Cameroons had always preferred self-determination. They were also in possession of french intelligence reports that Biafra would someday annex the former Southern Cameroon along with Fernando Po in a swath of territorial acquisitions in the area of the "Bight of Biafra".

i believe i've mentioned before somewhere, that it's interesting how both nigeria's southeastern region and cameroon's southwestern region had independence movements at the same time.

obviously, they'd have joined together at some point, imo.

Nayah:

Romeo have you read mine? really? if yes you would know this prove nothing, and you talking about 2008, you should inform you more cause since 2010 many things have changed (universities, memebers of governements, roads) I think instead of convicing yourself Cameroon is a desorganised country and insinuating I'am liar ( and I don't really understand your bitterness anyway) you should analyse more and especially better

Anyway Face and pres elect have said all and have answered my question which was geographic and not a excuse for "stability competition" or whatever, now if you wanna talk about this then right if not better talk to someone else I don't like disrespect and bitterness we suppose to be mature , hope I made that clear

Emofine don't worry sister these kind of arguments are not only not relevent but it's childish, I'm cameroonian by origins and might be better placed to talk about our realities than some people who think they know things more than the others. Cameroon is a peaceful country and thank God everyday it shows it, we have our problems, challenges like every other country but come on Cameroon is far from inter tribes troubles that unfortunately a lot of African countries are experiencing

I can see you are getting worked up over this, You said Biya is cool because your country has peace. I qouted a Cameroonian website with news that is all over the web about possible tensions mounting regarding Your darling Biya and his evil intentions for Cameroon and a reference they made about a riot that left over 40 dead merely 4 years ago, I was surprised because i didn't know about people dying in Cameroon in such numbers 4 years ago.

You are a Cameroonian by origin and not by birth, Visiting Cameroon 10 times a year is not the same as living in cameroon, you are just a tourist so quit claiming knowledge over others about happenings in Cameroon. Is your daddy or Brother working for Biya?

I am sure if you are from southern Cameroon you'll have a different opinion of Cameroon, Take that your Cameroon back because i am not buying it.

Don't even respond because that will look childish like you wrote before.

@topic
According to the United Nations, Central Africa does not exist. Instead they have "Middle Africa". You people should check that please

Romeo sorry it's you who are working up over this, just want to make you realize that some points are completely wrong about a country I repeat I do know better than you, no offense.

In fact I'm not going to Cameroon just for visits so again I know what I'm talking about, I'm regularly there for personal reasons so socio economical situation is what I know more
Anyway as I told you before the topic was about the geographic position of Cameroon and you're turning this on whatever, because I stated ( and I fiercely insist on) Cameroon is one of the most peaceful country, this is my last message about this statement thanks.
Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by Nayah(f): 12:07pm On Jul 04, 2011
Upengo my sister thanks for your contribution and yes we have more than 250 ethnies out there that's why Cameroon is called Africa in Miniature cause you meet the majority of all ethnic groups in Cameroon! ( Arabs, Bantu, Fulanis, Semi Bantous, tikar( Sudan descendants, )

Odumuchi you know Cameroon was indeed a former German colony until this country lost the first World War and then Cameroon past from German to French AND english protectorates ( quite different from colonies it's was about administrations and not colonisation) that's why Cameroon History is quite different from the other French African colonies, cause Cameroon now can freely trade more with Chinese ( who has a bigger part in terms of partnership than France now) or others without being molesting by France I mean Ivory Coast and Cameroon for example will have different relation with France and because of our temper( quite german to some extent combativeness ) France has never really liked Cameroon.

But nowadays you can see a huge Cameroonian community in Germany, they're the first African community coupled with Togolese who were also German and Namibian then, Cameroonians have kept some links and agreements with Germany ( easy visa among others)

Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by kembrat(m): 12:16am On Jul 19, 2011
Hello everybody, i'm a cameroonian who was born and raised in Douala.
As Nayah, i was suprised to read from some sites that Cameroon is a west african country. I've probably always read this in non-cameroonian english web site; particulary in english, american and english-speaking african countries web sites. I don't specially care if people consider us to be in central, western, eastern, northern or southern Africa, but the matter of fact is that we are a part of central african countries community. And seriously, we are much closer to the center of Africa than to the west. And another good reason for us to be where we are, is that we are the only country within the community which share a border with each member of the community (namely Chad, CAR, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea), and you know wich advantages this might bring.

Now about Biya, and the peace thing - I have to say to thing :

1- For me, Biya is just the worst president that you will find out there, but understand that speaking like that; i might not be totally objective, since i know about my country and our president much more than i do about the others, and in the same way, i grief more for my country.

2- secondly, Peace today in our philosophical mind became a relative term,  What does peace mean really? - I have my own opinion, but about Cameroon, i would say that despite Biya, Our country experiences some social stability and peaceful acceptance among the over 200 tribes that we get. I can guaranty you right the way that we don't specially love each other, but we accept each other, i will not give that credit to Biya, but to the people who realize that they don't need to fight against each other. If any credit should be given to the government - it's the fact that they don't try to create divisions between people, what i believe a lot of politicians in Africa including Nigeria (according to a Nigerian very good friend of mine) do. As for Biya, i think he doesn't care much about the peace as he care about "smartly" not offending too much anyone to not fragilise his regime.

And as a leader, he doesn't do "unnecessary" violations as  those they usually call dictator do. And i think that is the reason why he has been for nearly 30 years in power. Now, don't think cameroonians live in fear or something because of the Biya's regime, No! if you do, you are wrong, and to verify it - you could ask to people living in the country, and I'm pretty sure most of people will honestly reply that they don't fear to say what they feel or do what they want to if possible. And there are a lot of people who every day criticize the regime and they walk freely in our streets, there is even a very popular young rap-singer (General Valsero) who are very engaged in his texts, and always sing how the president and his acolytes steal the money and don't care about the people, he even call them by some words like "brigands,  thiefs, sorcerers, thugs, pede (homosexuals in "cameroonian"wink etc, " and the guy is living freely in Yaounde. They even had to stop his concerts sometimes because as they said once "they threaten the republic". There is no in central Africa another country who has reach the same level of freedom of speech, except maybe Gabon (and i say "maybe"wink.
All that to say that cameroonians don't live in fear, you know when you see someone who has lived in fear, and most cameroonians you will meet will absolutely not match that type.

Now, to comeback to the topic, i will just add that Cameroon could have decided to join Ecowas, but for geographical and economical reasons, it's better for us to be where we are and being the predominant economy (nearly 40% of the regional GDP)  of the CEMAC - economy and monetary community of central africa, and being his grain basket than being the most eastern country of west Africa. And about the west african market, i think 150 millions of nigerians is just enough, if we cannot get to Nigeria, we could not use our ecowas link with far countries like Ghana, Ivory Coast or Senegal!

I love Nigeria.
Peace to all!

I'm bamileke from baham. Glad to meet you my bantou sister!
I saw you like history, and we know our forefathers (especially the bassas and the bamis) have struggled a lot to get a real independance, what didn't happen exactely as they wished; but which has left a certain heritage that i can see everytime i read you.
So , where were you born? In Cameroon or France?
Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by Nayah(f): 10:14am On Jul 19, 2011
Yes indeed I'm very proud to be Cameroonian first and Bassa'a because of our rich culture and warrior spirit towards westerners, my parents have done their possible to raise me as an proud African, Cameroonian and especially Bassa known for what they've done for our Independance

Actually I was born in France
Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by kembrat(m): 11:19am On Jul 19, 2011
Great! I've met some Cameroonians who have had children abroad and they always try to raise them "cameroonianly" - they teach them about stuffs like food, music and some culture. I went last week to a cameroonian couple in Moscow who has two little girls (9 and 5 years old) ; the 9 years old was all the time checking stuffs about Cameroon where she has never been yet, in Wikipedia ; she was all the time asking me questions about Yaounde & Douala to know which city is better lol

Anyway good to know a little about you. As for me, i'm actually studying in Russia, and plan to go back home next year. And also, i would love to visit other african countries including our dear neighbor Nigeria.
Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by Nayah(f): 11:24am On Jul 19, 2011
Kembrat fine! yes Cameroonians are very very proud of their rich culture, God gave us a treasure with beautiful landscapes, delicious food taht a lot of Nigerian and others African brother do really like

As for me I had this luck travelling throughout the Continent ( Senegal, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Morocco, ) and yes I've been inveited in Nigeria I wish I could go there , then I'd like visiting Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa
Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by kembrat(m): 11:44am On Jul 19, 2011
Wow, you have been all over Africa!!!  I envy  smiley
Yes, you are right - our country is very blessed, and it's called "Africa in miniature" for a reason. By the way, it seems patriotism is just something we are born with, because they don't teach us that in school. And what is interesting is that people abroad know about our strong and fighting spirit.
But just like Nigeria and many other african nations, we do have a lot of potentials unfortunately left out, and i hope that (bring our countries together and wisely use our God-given natural and human resources) would be the fight of our generation.
Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by Nayah(f): 12:15pm On Jul 19, 2011
Exactly Kembrat but I trust on brand new generation Cameroon is changing believe me and yes we're blessed don't worry you'll see we'll handle it my dear

this debate about if Cameroun is in West Africa and Central Africa goes on in Canada
Cameroonians are so confused
@ the Miss West African Paegant Canada last year. .Many Cameroun girls came for the audition. . We were like I thought you guys said your country is a central African country. .today is central, tomorrow is west
At the end of the day after the organizers argued for sometime. They were allowed to participate based on the numerous amounts of contestants that applied from Cameroun and the arguments that also support it being on the west
Re: Why Our English Speaking Brothers Think Cameroon Is A West African Country by Nayah(f): 2:54pm On Jul 19, 2011
Ijaw girls we're not confused at all if you've read all we've said, for beauty pageant if you go to the UK and the Miss West Africa UK web site whose the winner is Cameroonian because the contest has included Cameroon, she has herself mentionned this "West African" thing is on anglophone's head only, but as we told my brother and I we're in Central Africa region and every single Cameroonian knows it.

I think the reason why you may be confused is because english sites or documents talk about West African country or "Centre west african" like some people say which is wrong, culturally and geographically we're closer to Central Africa than West, like I said we only share ONE boundary with West Africa and it's Nigeria, the others boundaries are Central African lands, and there are 5.

But this is not really relevant cause we can also say Angola is in West ( South West actually) judging from its position but it is considered  as a Central African land too wink

Hope I made that clearer now for you

Because it was classed as West African!
We where told it was West African! It is on the west coast of the continent!
Mount Cameroon is the highest peak in West Africa! Not Central but West.
Culturally we are known as Africa in miniature so it really doesn't matter who we boarder.
Very few of us have travelled from the top of the country to the bottom to say who our culture is more like.
We are not poor but poorly governed and if the Republic was not formed Southern Cameroon would still be West Africans and a lot of Cameroonians in London Class themselves as such.

Cameroon can be compared to Russia that is in Europe and Asia. Though politically and culturally Russia is in Europe, some parts of Russia fall under Asia. Western Cameroun is west African in nature. I will not be surprised one day to see that Western Cameroon has joined ECOWAS just as Cameroun has joined the Commonwealth.
I will not be surprised if the West of Cameroon pushes for unification with their Igbo and Eastern Nigerian neighbours and kins.

My dear, Cameroon is not "Western Cameroon"', mean by that that a large part of the country shares culture and boudaries with Central African countries (Chad, Gabon, Eq Guinea, Republic of Congo and RCA) plus as I have already underlined, ask to a Cameroonian, because before being from West is Cameroonian, joining Nigeria he would reply" We are Cameroonians" not Nigerians, don't be confused by the fact they don't like the way Biya is ruling our country ( so am I) and secession, Cameroon is a nation and that's our main strengh, despite our governance issues
