To my own perspective, That Avery is naturally arrogant and rude, if Richard settled down with her. He would've problem. The best is that he should go back to his wife. So from the recent replies on this story, I've come to observe there is a sort of, for lack of a better term, "popularity contest" among the fans of the three main female characters - Athena, Avery, and to a lesser extent, Eliza. Based on this, I want to put up a small poll. This is just to know how each character affects people. This is just a knowledge poll - it has nothing to do with how the story has been written. “Hmm, so you say your headaches and insomnia still persist,” the therapist said as he mused over the file on his desk. “Yes,” Athena responded. She was sitting in front of his desk again in his office, having booked another appointment. “And the medication? You Say it does not work?” “No, it does work…only that I get the headaches again after a short time. Can you prescribe something stronger?” “I wouldn’t recommend it,” he said, closing the file, “medication is only meant to slow your symptoms, not totally clear them.” He sat back in his chair. “A patient, in this case you, needs to personally understand and accept their current situation before the treatment can work.” “I understand current events in my life are very stressful, and that’s why I was recommended to you,” Athena said, “it’s a thing of the mind, and in order to pass through it all safely without resorting to harm…” “Perhaps that’s where the problem is,” the therapist quipped in. “What do you mean?” His eyes momentarily traveled down to the globes on her chest. “Well, you feel you’re very clear of your current…circumstances. Athena…can I call you that? No? Okay…Ms. Chambers, I’m beginning to feel that your lack of response to treatment is due to your overly strong personality.” “My…personality?” “You may think of it as a sort of defense mechanism…a “personality mask” if you will. Every human always wears such a “mask”.” Behind the desk out of sight, his hand slid to his crotch and he slowly unzipped his trousers. He slipped his hand inside and pulled his meat out. “I’ll give you an example,” he said as he slowly began to stroke, being careful not to alert her of his movements. She closed her eyes and waited for his instructions. “Now, I will be entering your inner mind…one…two…three…” He uttered a word, at the same time snapped his finger. Athena immediately went into a trance. Her eyes flew open, but she had a blank, far-away look in them. “Mrs. Chambers…can you hear my voice?” he leaned in closer until his face was mere inches from hers. “Yes…” she replied in a voice that was not hers. He lifted her hand and let go; it dropped and flopped back like a rag-doll. Her eyes remained blank and distant. He gently lay a hand on her breast and have it a soft squeeze. “Can you feel anything?” he asked. “No…” He smirked. It’s always the stubborn ones that were easily hypnotized. Richard left the operating room after the patient had been wheeled out. He did his post-scrub before changing back into his regular clothes and donning his hospital coat. He headed for his office and checked his phone again but still no reply. The messages had been read no doubt. He really wanted to discuss the events of that day, but she had made it a point to stay out of his way, and had hardly seen her. She had been avoiding him since that night. He spent the rest of the day going over his cases. By the time he closed the last file, it was already 6pm. He shut his desktop down and grabbed his bag. He said goodnight to the nurses and headed out the building towards the bus stop. It was a bit chilly; the forecast said it might rain a bit. He hoped to get home before anything major happened from the skies. He could still picture them in the room – Avery on her hands and knees, he behind her holding her arms with his shaft buried deep in her, both of them buck-naked as they stared back at Athena on the TV. That image could conjure the kind of reaction she portrayed and he did not really blame her. He had to find a way of talking to her. As if by some miracle, he looked up to see her standing under a street light in the walkway ahead; her back was to him and she did not see him approach. He walked up to her until he stood behind her. Just like on the bus, she stared down at her phone, the messages he had sent staring back at her. “Why are you staring so hard since you refused to reply?” he asked her gently. His words brought her out of her trance. “Dr. Richard…I’ve been thinking about our…relationship,” she said. They both started to walk. “I don’t think it’s right for us to go out when you’ve not drawn a clear line with your wife yet…” “Ex-wife…and I’ve-” “Wife, ex-wife, whatever…the point is, I feel like I’m doing something wrong by continuing to be with you.” “I told you about everything, right? The circumstances that led to this?” “Yes, but…” “So why are you still feeling bad?” Avery sighed in frustration. “That day, when your wife’s face appeared while we were having sex, I was really…shocked. I really did not know what to do. I felt like I was having sex with another woman’s husband which, if we look at it technically, I kinda am.” “Avery…I’m sorry about that. I did not expect for her image to appear while we were together. Besides, like I’ve told you, it’s just because of her dad who’s in the hospital. We don’t want anything to happen to him. We work in the same unit.” “H-hello, I’m Avery,” she said timidly. Eliza stared at her for a few moments. She turned her gaze back to Richard and disregarded her. Avery felt belittled. “I…I’ll not disturb you…” she said. “Thank you,” Eliza replied. “Avery…please, wait, we haven’t finished what we were talking about…” Richard said, but could only stand and look on as she started to walk away. He turned back to Eliza. “Did you really have to do that?” “What did I do?” “You could have at least been a bit kind to her. You shouldn't have disregarded her like she was nothing.” “Richard, I need you to come with me,” she said and dismissed his concerns, “there’s a place I need to take you to. Tonight.” “Where are we going to?” he asked with a hint of anger in his voice. Eliza gave him an equally dark stare. “You’ll know when we get there.” He wanted to say something else, but something about her tone made him falter.
