“Where are we going?” Richard asked again as Eliza gunned the car expertly down the highway. “Just wait and see,” she responded. She fed the car more gas, and it responded smoothly to her touch. Richard watched the cars and scenery go by. After a while, she pulled off the highway and drove for a few more minutes until she pulled up at the entrance of an exquisite hotel. “Where are we?” he asked again. Eliza opened the door and handed the key over to the young valet who appeared out of nowhere. “Just follow me,” she smiled. Richard walked behind her as she led him through the beautiful lounge, up a flight of stairs, and into a large ballroom where a dozen other people were. The patrons here exuded opulence and class. There were a number of powerful faces he thought he recognized. Smartly dressed waiters walked around serving trays of champagne and hors d'oeuvres, while smooth jazz floated through the room. “Where is this Eliza?” Richard asked once again. Eliza smiled at him gently. “This is-” “Oh Eliza, is that you?” a baritone voice said. They both turned to see a tall and imposing guy in a smart dinner jacket walking over to them. “Ben…you’re here early,” Eliza replied. “Well, I didn’t have anything to do this evening,” he said as they exchanged polite kisses on the cheek. He turned to Richard. “So who is this?” he asked. “Oh, this is Richard. He was my friend in the university.” Ben reached out his hand for a handshake. “Pleased to meet you Richard. My name is Benjamin.” “Hello, I’m Richard.” “Oh, our widely regarded actress has arrived,” another male voice said. Eliza smiled, baring her beautiful white teeth. “Richard, let me introduce you to this fine gentleman. He’s a doctor like you.” “Hello, I’m Dr. James Dunn.” “Why is the owner of the biggest cosmetic surgery practice calling himself a mere doctor? You’re supposed to be called the boss.” Ben proffered. “C’mon Ben, I take the knife too once in a while.” “You look like you struck gold. I guess those wealthy housewives cannot have enough of their procedures, right?” “No matter how much I earn, it’s nothing compared what you make. Your company’s stock value skyrocketed recently.” “Hey, it’s not my company, it’s my dad’s.” “But you run it, don’t you? Don’t be so modest.” Ben turned to Richard. “You say you’re a doctor too right?” “Where do you practice?” asked Dr. Dunn. “I’m a thoracic surgeon at the general hospital.” “Ahh, right,” Dunn replied, clearly not impressed. He turned back to Ben. Eliza gently pulled Richard away from the two men and led him to the bar. “Eliza, you’ve not told me what sort of gathering this is,” he said. She reached for one of the glasses of champagne the bartender had placed before them. “This is a single’s gathering.” 2 Likes 1 Share |

“A single’s gathering?” “More so, it is a gathering for some of the most exclusive and successful people in the city, those who recently divorced or just want to have a great time by meeting new people. It is also a gathering to help people relieve their boredom.” “I don’t follow-” “Richard,” Eliza took a sip from her glass, “you’re a recently divorced and successful man, so you do belong here.” “Why should I? I don’t find these kind of environments comfortable…” “What are the two of you chatting about?” one of the earlier voices walked up to them. “Why? Are you jealous?” Eliza asked. Ben glared at Richard. “Have we met before? Your face looks quite familiar, now that I think about it.” “Yup, you both know each other,” Eliza smiled as she toyed with the rim of her champagne. Both men stared at her. “Richard used to help me carry my stuff around in school.” “Oh, that guy,” Ben exclaimed, finally recalling, “You’re the little guy who helped her lug her stuff to the car that day.” Richard also remembered. He was one of the guys who drove flashy cars and wore expensive attire that trooped around Eliza back then. He remembered this particular one “tipping” him with some loose change one particular day. “If anyone told me back then you would turn out to be a doctor, I wouldn’t have believed them. I thought you were going to be a school teacher or something,” Ben said. They both stared at each other for several dark moments. Eliza watched them both closely. “Come to think of it, Eliza here always preferred men who were smart, compared to pigs-for-brains like me.” “What do you mean?” she asked. Ben turned to her. “Did you not dump me, a bodybuilder and athlete, for that skinny weasel who had an MBA?” “I told you that it was an arranged marriage by my parents.” “Who’s talking about marriage in a gathering like this?” the other doctor appeared. Slightly behind him was another beautiful young lady. Ben’s eyes immediately latched onto her. “And who might you be?” he asked and took her hand. “My name is Kimberly. I’m a banker and I recently got divorced from my husband, and the kind doctor here invited me to this gathering,” she giggled under the charm Ben exuded. “Divorced eh?” he said and kissed the back of her hand, “we’ll surely do a good job making you forget about that loser.” “Oh stop it…” she giggled. Richard watched on in disgust as the two men swooned over the blushing newbie. He finally tore his gaze away and looked around the room at others in different stages of conversation. “So do you now understand the goal of these types of gatherings?” Eliza watched him closely. Richard turned to her. "Tell me again." “Successful people who just regained their freedom from their boring marriages take these sort of outings to mingle and meet each other,” she continued, “and if the cards align right, probably hook up. Most of them just do it for the fling, but a number of them take it more serious. You could say it is a win-win situation. It does not lead to any scandals due to their single status, and everyone is free to do whatever they want.” “I don’t feel I belong to this kind of gathering.” Eliza cocked her head. “Why do you think so?” “First of all, everyone here seems to be quite opulent, wealthy, the who’s who. I don’t belong to such a crowd. I don’t think I can join them.” “Why do you need to join them?” she asked, “and why would I offer my beloved to all these sex-starved ladies here? I’m not crazy.” “Beloved?” “You keep refusing to meet me, so I had to make use of a gathering like this to ask you out,” she replied. “What are you talking about?” She placed her drink on the counter and took his hands in hers. Her eyes did not waver an inch as she leaned forward and looked deep into his. “Richard,” she said affectionately, her eyes boring deep into his. Get a Google drive account or one drive or Dropbox. You can sync your file backups to these to avoid corruption and loss. 2 Likes |

xenten: Thanks man. For someone who has been in IT for more than 20 years, one would think I should know better than to NOT back up my files. I harp on everyone to do it all the time, yet I do not do it myself. The good thing is I was able to locate a tool which I'm currently using to recover the files from the corrupt drive.
