“Hello dad, I’m here,” Richard greeted as he walked into room 1206. “Oh Richard,” the old man replied with a cheer. He was propped up on his pillows. He looked much better today. Richard studied the chart attached to his bed as well as the bedside monitors. “So how do you feel today?” he asked. “Hmm, same old me,” he responded, “all thanks to Nurse Avery who has been really taking good care of me.” Richard turned to Avery whom he had noticed when he first came in. She had been trying to keep herself busy doing other things while he talked to the old man. “Which reminds me,” the old man said, “she told me she would not be able to take care of me anymore…something about being transferred to another unit?” “Yeah…” “I feel more at ease when she’s taking care of me. Can you raise it up with the head nurse or someone?” “Uh, that will be a bit tough…” he noticed Avery walking out of the room with her tray of equipment. “I’ll try and see what I can do.” Richard replied. “Thank you.” He hurried after the retreating figure and saw her at the end of the hallway. “Nurse Avery, can you wait a moment?” he called out. He walked up to where she had stopped and was staring down at her toes. “What’s wrong Avery?” he asked, “you don’t reply my messages, don’t pick my calls…” “Dr. Richard,” she started, “I’ve already told you that I will not respond to you until you’ve taken care of the issue with your wife first.” Richard suddenly felt angry. “I’ve told you…y’know what, forget it. Let’s meet up after work. I’ll be waiting for you at the pediatrics entrance.” “What? I…” but he had already started walking away. “I’ll see you then. Don’t keep me waiting.” “Dr. Richard…” but she could only watch his retreating back. Something in the tone of his voice made her decide it was not going to be a great idea to disappoint him. They sat at a counter in a high-end sushi restaurant. The itamae expertly sliced the several exotic pieces of fish into bite-size pieces before carefully placing them on fine pieces of china. The gold plates contained the exquisite pieces, very delicate to the palate. Others contained not so fine fish, but still quite good. He placed each plate on the conveyor belts which brought the food to the customers. “I decided to find another place we could chat peacefully,” Richard said to Avery, who was busy studying the dishes moving on the table. “I just want to eat something good,” Avery responded as she studied the dishes, “I don’t even know what to choose from.” She reached for one of the golden plates and picked her chopsticks. “I’ve already decided that we should just act like nothing happened between us until you settle your current situation with your wife.” She dipped a piece of nigiri into some tangy soy sauce and brought it to her mouth, “wait…I think it is just better we forget about everything that happened entirely.” She chewed slowly. “I’ve really thought about this for a long time…I believe you were just forcing yourself to go out with me just because you can’t have sex with your wife anymore…” “Why are you saying all this…” “Our relationship – if we can call it a relationship – has been quite strange from the beginning.” She reached for another golden plate, “I know if we weren’t working in the same hospital, we would have just had a one-night stand…so right now I believe you’re just in this difficult drum because you’re not sure whether to break up with me or continue…” “What are you saying Avery? Do you want to break up with me?” She turned her bespectacled face to him. “Remember I told you how I felt when your wife appeared on the TV in the middle of what we were doing? I was so upset, my body just started moving on its own…I actually felt pity for myself, having sex with a married man while his wife was right there on TV.” She stared at the food passing by. “I guess our relationship is like this conveyor belt,” she continued, “some of these fine pieces of sushi could have been missed because it was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but as long as it keeps waiting, it’ll come back around.” She reached for yet another golden plate. “As long as I don’t get taken by others, there is always the chance we will get back together, right?” Richard stared at her. “Your analogy does not make the least bit of sense Avery.” She chuckled. “I believe it sums it all up perfectly. In any case, I’m going to make a big dent in your wallet tonight.” “Why?” “For treating me like a intimacy gadget. I'm going to make sure you know you lost someone who loved you so much.” She reached out for another golden plate, only to feel Richard’s hand over hers. “Avery, I’ve been really selfish to you.” He said. “Really?” “Living together with someone I already divorced…I realize I must be very crazy for you to demand you believe everything.” “I’ve always tried to act like a good guy, but I always end up hurting the ones I love and care about,” he continued. Avery just stared back at him. “What I did was really selfish, and you do not deserve it.” He took both of her hands in his, and stared into her bright eyes. “I’m so sorry for making you so depressed…I will move out of the place and get an apartment of my own.” He reached for his phone. “Infact, I’ll call her right now to let her know.” Avery jumped. “Dr. Richard, you don’t have to do that right away…” “No, I have to,” he replied as he dialed Athena, “I want to show you how serious I am. I really mean it.” He waited for a while. “She’s not picking up. Maybe she’s at the news-station.” He dialed her number again and waited while it rang. ----------------------------------------------- Several miles away, the therapist dipped his hand into her bag. “Who could be calling her right at this moment.” He grumbled and pulled out the phone. The callerID “Richard” flashed on the screen. The therapist smirked. “Unfortunately, we are still in the middle of a session,” he grinned evilly. He switched the phone off and returned it back to her bag. Turning to the supine figure, he knelt down beside her and began to grope her exposed breasts. It’s only when the time, place, and my mood are in sync and in the perfect state that I think about having sex.” “I see,” he said. She stared into the distance with a forlorn look. “My husband instead kept demanding for sex ad odd and inappropriate times, and I always hated it.” “I also enjoy having sex when everything is under my perfect control,” he continued, “but I’m sure those are not the only reasons behind your issue.” “What do you mean?” The man sat forward. “You did not mention anything about your late mother.” “H-huh?” He knew he had hit a nerve. “I could detect a mental block, and that could be the key factor to everything.” She stared at him for a very long, dark moment. “You know, I had wanted to discuss something with you,” she said. “Sure…please do share.” “I would like to discontinue with this consultation and treatment.” “W-what?!” “When I first started coming here, I was weighed down with so many issues, I was almost contemplating ending it all,” she continued, “but after going through the sessions, I believe I have now come to a clearer picture as to what is wrong with my mind.” He began to sweat. “I, ah…yes, that...” She stood up and picked her bag up. “I think I should be okay now…thank you for providing me with your medical expertise and service.” The therapist quickly wracked his brain. He couldn’t let her go just like that. “Madam Chambers, please wait a moment,” he said. Athena paused halfway to the door. “Yes?” “I think you should come back for just one more session…for one more evaluation.” “Why?” she asked suspiciously. “Well…err…y’know, a mind that has undergone hypnosis may end up showing side effects…a session would be enough to cure you of any lingering things that might arise from the…treatment.” “What?!” “I’m sorry I didn’t mention it at first…but I did not know you were going to end your treatment abruptly.” He hurriedly wrote something on his pad. “is this dosage too much?”, he thought, “ahh screw it…it’s going to be the last time…I must make sure everything goes well and she doesn't come out when she's not supposed to.” He ripped the paper out and proffered it to her. “Before the final consultation, please follow this prescription. It will help in the process.” Athena took the paper from his outstretched hand and glanced at it. She folded it and slipped it into her handbag. The therapist collapsed into his chair in relief after she shut the door behind her. That was a close one, he thought. he would make sure he did everything he wanted next time. ----------------- In the parking lot on the other side of the street, sitting at the wheel of an old, dilapidated hatchback among other vehicles, the shady figure, now dressed in his well-worn suit, watched as the object of is private investigation walked to a sleek Honda Accord and got in. His hands clutched the mobile tablet and he stared at the frozen screen. He could not believe what he had just witnessed the past hour. He could not help but have a feeling of disgust. “This dude, is he…insane?!” he thought as he watched the sleek car and it's gorgeous occupant drive out of the parking lot. Richard got off the train and headed down the platform towards the street below. The streetlights cast an illuminating path to guide him safely as he tried to process all that happened earlier tonight. He slowly walked the last several hundred yards towards their condominium building. He tried rehearsing what was in his mind for the hundredth time, what he was going to say to Athena, to tell her he was moving out. He did not need to feel guilty about it. They were divorced. He gazed up at the sky. It was a cloudless night, and the almost full moon cast a silver light on the environment. Now that he thought about it, it was quite silly of him to have even agreed to it in the first place. He had managed to convince Avery, and all he needed to do right now was make up on his promise. He walked into the lobby of the building and took the elevator to the tenth floor. He keyed in the door code and stepped into the dark hallway. Athena sat on the sofa in front of the TV. She must have just concluded her nightly yoga routine as she had on her usual tight body revealing sports bra and yoga pants. She had a half-filled glass of red wine in her hand, and she glanced at him as he walked into the sitting room. “I’m home,” he greeted her. “Welcome back,” she responded. “I tried calling you earlier today.” “Really? I didn’t know you called.” Something about her did not seem right. She had a dull, vacant, and rather lethargic look in her demeanor. Her voice lacked the usual energy. “Yes,” he replied, peering at her closely, “around six-thirtyish?” “Oh, I was at at the doctor’s at that time…” “You came to the hospital today?” “No, not YOUR hospital,” she said, staring at the contents of her glass, “…I went to another clinic.” Richard sat down beside her. “What’s wrong with you? Are you feeling ill?” “You don’t need to know.” “Hey, I’m a doctor remember? You could have asked me instead of going to pay for another doctor’s consultation.” “Why should I?” Athena asked, “why are suddenly acting like you care? Like we’re still married? You're no longer my husband, remember?” Richard studied her closely. Something was definitely not right about her. The normal Athena would have blown a gasket. She just seemed…off…low energy…lethargic. Was the stress of everything finally getting to her? “You seem to be quite different. Are you sure you’re alright?” “I’m fine…it could be the medication I took that’s making me feel dizzy and tired.” “Medication? What medication? Can I see them?” “What’s wrong with you? Stop invading in my privacy!” she barked. She took a sip from her glass. “So what did you call me for?” “What?” “You said you tried to reach me earlier today. What did you want?” “Oh, right…your dad’s condition has slowly been improving…” Her face brightened. “Really?” “Yes. I don’t think we will need to carry out surgery. A few rounds of chemotherapy should cure him.” “That’s a relief,” she sighed, “I was worried so much something would happen to him eventually.” She turned to face him. “Thanks for looking after him Richard,” she said softly. “You don’t need to thank me. I’m just doing my job…one more thing though.” “Yes?” He twiddled his thumbs nervously. “I…I think I should move out.” Silence. “I realized, thinking about it, it’s quite strange we are living together, though we’re divorced. It doesn’t seem right…” Athena drained her glass and got up. She walked to the kitchen. “So have you found a place to stay?” “Hmm? No, I’m not going to move out immediately. I just wanted to tell you about it first.” She turned on the tap and rinsed her wine glass. “You’re right, it doesn’t make sense for us to be living together…as a divorced couple. Just inform me ahead of time whenever you’ve fixed a date to move.” “S-sure.” That went rather smoother than he expected. She did not even argue or give any reaction, which was quite unusual of her. His phone rang in his pocket. “Hello? Oh, Dr. Baxter, how are you this evening?” He listened for a few moments. “Tomorrow’s OP? The patient’s blood vessels are too thin? Why are you just telling me this now?” His voice rose a notch, loud enough for Athena to hear from the kitchen. “Hey, that’s why I told you to practice beforehand on how to use the apparatus…no, don’t give me any bullshit from that philosopher guy you like quoting... NIETZSCHE or whatever his name is…you should spend more time learning how to use the required equipment than reading quotes about a dead guy. Reach out to Dr. Wu. He would be able to give you some pointers on how to use…” He looked up and Athena was standing over him. “Are you okay Athena?” Athena did not respond. She had a vacant, faraway stare in her eyes. It was the same look she had the night Weatherpunk brought her home. To his amazement, she started to strip, first shedding her yoga pants before pulling her sports bra off and tossing it aside.
