EPILOGUE

“Checkmate.” Harry smiled smugly.
He and Shane sat at a table in Shane’s living room with a chess board between them. Harry had just won the fifth game in a row.
“Five losses in a row, man.” He shook his head at Shane. “That’s a record.”
“Sounds like someone is losing his touch.” They glanced sideways to see Michelle smiling from up the stairs. She gave a small wave and walked off.
“Looks like I’ve got myself a fan.” Harry smiled towards her direction.
He frowned when he noticed the non responsive mood of Shane.
“Hey. What’s up with you?” Harry asked.
“Nothing really.” Shane replied. “Just the stuff that has happened within a year. Sorry, my mind gets hazy nowadays.”
“No it’s okay. I understand.” Harry nodded and he reflected on all that had happened.
After the incident that day, the two had put their differences apart for good this time. Fortunately and to Shane’s relief, Harry didn’t press charges. Harry understood the trauma Shane was going through. First the death of his girlfriend, then his brother and then finally, his best friend ironically by his own hands. It was two much for an ordinary person to bear. Harry commended the mental strength of Shane. Anyone else would have broken down.
Michelle had gone to see her father and to everyone’s relief, he had made a steady recovery. After a month, she came back to stay with Shane. Roxanne had made sure to keep in touch in Shane when she was off duty and even paid visits.
“Never thought there’ll be the day when I hate to see that thing.” Harry turned his gaze towards the window.
Shane followed his gaze and his eyes landed at the full moon. He quickly looked away as the memories rushed in.
“I’m finally glad we don’t have to stay in hiding on days like this anymore though.” Harry said.
“Are you sure about that?” Shane gave him a doubtful look.
“What do you mean?” Harry frowned lightly.
“I don’t know. I’m just….” Shane sighed tiredly and rubbed the back of his neck. “With all the weird things that we’ve heard and seen, I’ve come to learn that the unexpected always happen when we keep our guard down. You know that old geezer said the curse happens to the first born of every generation. Then remember that he had twins. I still feel the legend is missing something. Or rather hiding something.”
Harry paused as a thoughtful look crossed his face.
“I just keep wondering everyday.” Shane leaned back on his seat. His eyes narrowed as the next words came out of his lips:
“Is it really over?”

Upstairs, Michelle had just come out of the shower wrapped around her. She opened her closet and brought out a pink tank top and white jeans. Scrunching her nose up in disapproval, she tossed it back into the closet. Letting out a groan, she shut the closet. Tonight was supposed to be an outing with Harry and she couldn’t decide what to wear. Calling Shane to help out would be a waste and Roxanne was on duty.
Suddenly she felt woozy and a slight pain shot through her head. She clutched her head and spun around, holding the drawer for support. Just like that, the pain was gone.
“That was weird.” She mumbled, releasing her hold on her head.
She walked towards the mirror and stood in front of it. A gasp escaped her lips at what she saw.
Her reflection stared back at her.
With the familiar golden, deadly eyes.
