I have been in this country for years and I can't say I'm a proud Nigerian, owing to the fact that nothing is working, but people abroad ironically love us due to some feat by our fellow compatriots in entertainment and sport
But my major reason for this is that Nigerians easily adjust to suffering without questioning their public servants whom they have elected to saddle the affairs of the state
Imagine the issue of fuel scarcity, naira crunch, manipulation of election result, snake and monkey swallowing money,ASUU strike, inconsistent power supply the list goes on and on
Well last last we go get SENSE

1.Fuel scarcity and power supply issues can be solved by deregulation and removal of subsides so that both sectors can earn enough profit to pay for needed imporvements...but since we are too poor to pay for power and petrol at market price, we pay for heavy subsides(which do a poor job of covering losses resulting from price controls) and take loans to cover the resulting deficit from the budget.

GSM is not subsidsied. As a result, they had the profit to pay for improvements and eventually crash prices (once upon a time a SIM card cost thousands of naira to get. Today it is N1000 or less. Some people even have more than 20 SIM cards.

2.The snake swallowing money and corruption result because we are an oil dependent economy, and because most of our income comes from sharing of oil money.

Simple solution is for states to tax every working adult 20% of their income...that way it incentivises people to take an interest in how government is run, and puts heat under government to do well. But any thing increased tax....we are poor...so we rely on oil money which tanks to price fluctuations....means we never earn enough for all of us...thus we have to take loans.

3.ASUU strike happens because the number of universites has expanded way beyond what government can cover. In the time of our forefathers, when there were about 5 universites, with student populations less than 5000 each...and when you did not need much money for equipment as we do now....government could afford cheap fees. Not now.

Again, the solution has been around...raise fees. But because we are poor....fees are kept too low to adequately fund universites...and they are severely underesourced.(As an example, a relative of mine went to a university in the USA where fees were 22000 dollars US per annum, compared to the less than 500 dollars in Nigeria. One machine that in Nigeria...there were less than two nationwide...they had three of that in their science faculty...and they are not the best university in the USA by the way)

ASUU members these days play on an international field, not local, ...also we need good quality graduates for our future as a people...or even for our own family future...and a well equiped uni is a necessity. That is why ASUU keeps going on strike...to get government to find money for the universities so that the VC's (most of whom were ASUU members before)...don't have to increase fees to get the money to pay for all that stuff.

4.We all talk about fighting corruption, but when it is our favorite;s turn...we get angry. As an example...I sincerely believe that both the current APC government and the PDP one that precceded it are corrupt and should be investigated and people should go to jail. That would get me hate from large swathes of the country.

Here in Nigeria when someone swallows money, we beg for forgieveness and so on. And that is how small corrupt people become big corrupt people.

5.Finally, this comment I am respnding to was probably written because APC won the elections. The truth is, APC lost, but won because the majority vote against APC was divided into three parties. This phenonenom is not restricted to Nigerian politics...in Kenya, the opposition lost two elections before they realized that unity was needed...and thus they won. In Cameroon Biya is in power because the opposition cannot form a formdiable and inspiring unity movement.

Here in Nigeria, Obi, Atiku and Kwankwaso and Wike were all ego centric people who divided their party PDP into three parties, and as a result...APC won capitalizing on their divisions.

There was no rigging. If you want rigging, check out the first and second republic elecitons. Rigging then makes today;s rigging look like kidnergarten moves. Infact, I will boldly say that there is and has never been any rigged election in Nigieria since 1999...ever since I discovered that people can blast PDP or APC and on election day vote for the same parties...I have stopped believeing in rigging.
