I have noticed Churches or pastors in particular are very fond of asking the kind of job you do or 'where do you work', almost immediately you meet them as if it's such a crucial question to be admitted into their fold. Abi Is it so crucial?

This exchange I'm talking about usually happens when u newly met them in church or attend their program. And why it gets me each time is that, their body language and voice tone usually makes it seem they expect or hope you really work in a big deal place

Why is this so? Is it just a sincere question or something with ulterior motive, especially in a time like this when unemployment is so high in Nigeria.
Because of this expectation I usually don't tell them where I work cos from experience I realize they treat me better and rather pedestalize me which I don't think is necessary, compare to when I just give them some uninspiring answer.
What's the relationship between employment and salvation? Why is this question so crucial when they meet a new potential member that they are always so eager to ask you even to the point of digging further to get the minutest detail immediately you meet them? It sort of gets at me, kind of invasive for a first time meeting.

They want to know whether you are worth their time.

I'm not putting this here for ridicule, i just want alternative opinion or if possible for them to search their heart and be sure their motive is really not borne out of potential future gain, or an avenue to give preferential treatment, which the Lord forbids in his service

But is this biblical to judge people by job worth? Does this conform with Christ teaching of preaching the gospel and serving his Flock?

James 2:2-9 (KJV) For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

That's why I don't raise up my hand or stand up for that "first timer" stuff.
