A few weeks ago, there was a post where a banker quit his 70K job to go start a car wash and then began starving because the carwash paid him N500 daily (N15K monthly).

Ever since, we've been pondering what he could have done differently. So we put pen to paper to write down people who started businesses about a decade ago. Only one person out of 25 is still running his business. everyone has either packed up and run back to a job or japaed. Even several of the motivational speakers in the past like a popular pastor and fela durotoye have left the space.

In this conversation below about that banker's story, everyday folks, bankers, architects and veteran businessmen debunk several ideas about following your passion. They explain what you need to put in place before quitting your job to start that business, , how you should manage the expectations of family members about your success, why you need to have support systems in place and how to start out.

It's definitely worth watching.

So, have you ever regretted following your passion? Let's hear

Who could ever regret following their passion?
Following your passion first and foremost is fulfilling, then getting paid for it is like extra.
The truth is most Nigerian youths don't know (haven't discovered) what their true passion is.

Two passions I followed that ruined my life. But I recovered.

(1) The lady I loved so much that messed me up.
(Lesson: Follow peace of mind over feelings). Sometimes we are offered two or more good options, but we may tend to follow the exciting one amongst the good options. Excitement is not a proof of being in the right thing, but time and peace of mind proves it.

(2) A false man of god I met.
I wasted money, time and my life in this man's church. Though I recovered things after I left.

(Lesson: Never be carried away by prophecy, fire, ginger etc. Do not allow people lay hands on you anyhow, be careful when saying "god of so so so man of god". You may be calling his diety instead of God Almighty.

Passion?
Is there anything like passion today?
Everybody's passion is money abeg. Passion ko passion ni

Remove money from the equation and see if everybody's passion is not to sleep, eat and have fun.

I quit my job when I realised that I could work from home and over the internet. Admittedly, it has been a journey full of ups and downs. But then, life is full of ups and downs itself.

However, there are things you had better not expose yourself to. If you get exposed to getting paid in foreign currency, you will find it extremely difficult to return to a job that pays in local currency because what you make from one project can sustain you for 3 months in Nigeria.

So, no, I have no regrets.

Indeed

@OP

Everyone needs to do their own homework.

Just blindly following ANY advice - no matter how well-intentioned - may not pan out well...

Recently I left my job which i was paid over 150k MONTHLY just to sit at home and study and practice a skill that i know eventually it will pay off my whole one year salary in 2-3 months.

It was never easy at the begining i must Tell you. My elder brother taught i was stupid, my collagues at work mocked me but honestly this few weeks i just feel so much satisfied cos i literally have the knowledge that can sustain me for the next 50yrs.

I always tell my self this. ITS BETTER TO WEAR ONE SHIRT AND ONE TROUSER AND CARRY INFORMATION WORTH MILLIONS IN YOUR HEAD.. ITS VERY STUPID TO LOOK EXPENSIVE ON THE OUTSIDE AND NOTHING EXPENSIVE INSIDE YOUR HEAD.

I FEEL SO FUFILLED THIS FEW WEEKS AFTER I RESIGNED FROM WORK OF 150K MONTHLY TO SETTLE DOWN AND STUDY FOR THE PASSION THAT BURNS INSIDE OF ME...

I could remember telling my closest family members and pastors about my plans and Everyone of them were all just advising me to keep it safe.. come and see how humans are , none were like
"wow this passion you have, that you want to rezign from your CURRENT job how much do you need fora start-up so that i can support you" .. this alone self will tell you that starting from the bottom is hard cos its rare to see people who will literally key into your passion, you just have to take your own balls by the hand and have faith in what you do

I GAVE MY SELF TIME, AT LEAST BEFORE DECEMBER THERE WILL BE A DIFFERENCE.

Following your passion becomes dangerous when you don't create a structured plan.

And if you are so scared to take those bold steps, at the later part of your years here on earth you will be left with regrets upon regrets.

Remember, we only die once , so make sure you live this life to the fullest, dare to take those bold decision's that you know will take you to that desire and dream life you wish to enjoy.

Follow your passion, start building and before u know it the results at the end outweigh all the labour and SACRICICES.

But very importantly, plan and follow the plan. If it fails, replan and follow the plan

The only people who regretted following their passion are the ones who got enticed and derailed by material things or wealth..
Following your passion doesn't necessarily means you will succeed in what you do, but you will be okay if you don't, as far as it keeps making you happy.
But present day nigeria economy can never make you follow your passion, cos you can't be happy while being poor.
