Good morning all,

I will make this short and brief. I have work in a school for 10years now. I started working there with a salary of 8k up till 20k. I now have a wife with 2kids. The salary was not taking care of us again. And I was left in taking loan. But in any academic session ie 1st, 2nd, 3rd term, apart from my salary I do see up to 100k or more base on tips and other deals.

I resigned February and I got a new job of 45k. Now my former job is calling me to come back, that I will be given 30k.. maybe when more pupils come my salary will be increase..

Former job
* I go by 7.30 and close by 3.30 and have time with my family
* Trekable from my house, I don't pay t.p.
* I enjoyed public holidays and mid term break
* I don't go on Saturday, still have time with my family
* Tips and pension available

New job
* I go by 7:30 and close by lastest 7:30 or 8 no time for my family
* I pay 400 to and fro
* I work on Saturdays no time for my family
* No tips anywhere.. just your salary and you will be subcharge for any wrong posting.

I have 1 week to decide... Please help coz I am confused.

I think you should go back, but put your eyes outside. 400 to and fro in a week is #2,400 in a month that's basically 10k with more workloads. Though the school was very inconsiderate to allow you stay in same salary for that long, hence why you need to start looking at other options.

A family man should be earning way more than that.

Negotiate with your old employer to increase your salary more than the 30k they are offering, trust me they will add to it.

Meanwhile, while on it keep your eyes open for a better offer outside.

go back to your former job.

you make almost 100k outside your salary, that's a nice one.
try to cement your side hustle cause they might also be looking for your replacement

Take the offer from the former one. And please, put some of the time you have with your family into good use; getting a side hustle. It could be a class/home tutorial.

OP look for a third choice, but if you can’t find ,go with the one that gives you family time, a lot of workers can give anything to be with their family.

You see that second job, you will be working salary you no see, tp don collect am, family time you no get, imagine working 12 hours. No ever consider the second one unless you want to turn your wife to a nagging wife if she is not the understanding type. Anyway OP na you hold knife and yam do as you please.

If the transportation cost is to be factored, the longer working hours, and the extra work days involved. I do not think 15k extra is worth it.

N40k salary for a family man?
I feel very sorry for your situation even if that isn't your fault.
Your former Job affords you the time to do other things if you are industrious. Do not spend it with family at home. Go out there and do other things.
Examples are buying eggs from farmers to resell, small scale farming or part time Uber. Just look around you and tap into the opportunities around to fill a large part of your life and that of your family. An average family in Nigeria now cannot live well with 200k Salary.

When I go through receipts I pile up in my car compartment. I realise how much things have become pricey. Weekly shopping for the basic needs for a family of 4 now cost as high as 25-30k minus luxury. And we have people earning as low as 15k. Pathetic!

God help us in this country.
Our leaders, present and past are cruel.

OP, do not settle for less please. You deserve more.
Go back to the first job and have an extra means of income no matter how difficult it is. Learn a skill if you can't improve your qualification, it is better to die trying than to never try at all.
I pray for you and many others in this same place.

Cheers!

On face value, the old job looks best. You may also put alternative ways of securing additional funds in the forefront of your return.

Just go back to your previous job, you can ask them for salary review after 6months and stay do your side hustle and take good care of your family.

@ podium , I will be very honest with you.

Is your wife working ? Please stop whining yourself with that type of salary , how do you survive on 30k monthly nitori oloun ? You even said you make extra 100k per term (3 months ) , which puts your monthly income at 63k. Please think of a way to stand on your own. It’s either you learn lucrative skills or start a business no matter how small or add more certificates and find a good job .

You said you have two kids , they’ll soon be in secondary schools , how will u be able to pay school fee and give them good life? When youself go enjoy your life? I know you’re trying, but i enjoin you to channel your energy to something more productive and profitable. As a family man with bills to pay , please forget about passion!
Please my brother. Think think think !!!

If you are a teacher, I guess it is time to look for Pp to augment your present salary, start from your neighborhood, organise lessons and you self improve on your I.T or softskills. Put that free time on self development etc. Your former job is better to achieve this.

Wonder why people always focus too much on salary.
A former colleague of mine in the banking industry made the same mistake OP is about to make.

This my colleague happens to be an engineer. Got a job in the bank I was working as a young graduates back then with salary of your N84k, but also got another offer with a government agency with salary of N42k he opted for the banking job and gave his government job offer to his best friend in school (an engineer likewise).
First 2 to 3 years he was doing banking big boy over his friend, by the 4th year till date (15yrs later) the difference is now clear, the guy in the government agency is now a super big man.

Never, I repeat never! Pick a job based on salary alone.
You want to leave a job that gives you N100k extra because the salary is small, but the salary of the new place and total any other income is not upto the extra N100k you get in you former place.

Oga, you don't need advice, you need to join NSPPD 😁
