In my own opinion, I would suggest they build just a simple house with simple furnishing in the village.... Then own even if its a hut to call their own in the city.

Some people spend their time equally in the city and villa not just during the festive session so it makes sense to make it as comfy as possible.

For some folks, their country home becomes their permanent home after retirement.

Your country home stands and serves not just you but for generations to come unlike the city which can be demolished by over zealous govt laws or officials.

This practice is common among the igbo tribe. And i think that is one of the reorientation of the civil war. Cos after the war, most of their houses built in the north were confisticated and never returned to them. Besides, many of them are mobile moving from one location to the other for business transaction.
In yorubaland, there is this saying 'ile ni abo isinmi oko' (after the day farmwork, home is the resting place). They believe that after spending their youthful and productive age in another man's land, the next thing is to go back home and retire to enjoy what they have acquired.
Seems many hausas aren't really interested in life outside their territory except some that come with trailer to the southern sabos. Though they are many in lagos.

There are some people that leave their houses in Lagos everyday for office by 4am and do not get back home till about 10pm. So, using this your logic, it means that since they spend most of their time in the office, they should buy a big bed and be sleeping in the office and then sleep on a small bed at home.

Anyway, nobody that visits the village will want to go there and go and lodge in a hotel or sleep in his grand father's mud house with his family while enjoying a duplex in the city. East or West, home is the best.

most people do d same but i tink what my dad did was the best. he first built a manageable house in d place where he lives b4 he built his mansion at d village. if by tomoro he decides to build a better one where he lives now,no probs because he already has a good one at home where he will retire at old age

I agree totally.Yeah! You may be right(that the idea is as a result of the civil war experience),we had to learn the hard way.Nevertheless,is an idea that i would like to continue because,we tend to develop other regions and neglect home.If it continues like this,it can only get better.

I would say it's because charity begins at home. After you've lived outside your village for many years and have acquired wealth, for you to have respect in that village, you need to show prove of your many years of living outside by putting up a good structure that would be called your own.

it's almost a lack of common sense......
why build such an expensive house in the village where the properties won't appreciate as much as the ones built in the cities. the funniest thing is these people spend an equivalent of 20 days in those houses in one calendar year - such a waste of money and illogical reasoning.

I think the village is where u feel safe as ur legitimate habitation so u need to be comfortable in ur home n with nature as the case may be.

Secondly some ppl do it for show off like 'am doing well dude, deal with it'.

The cost of building in d village is cheaper.A man who has 28million naira can only go as far as getting a plot of land nd mayb start the foundation in Lagos,but with dat same amount,1can.
