Totally agreed,I've wanted to sell my house in d village, but no reasonable offer yet.wat a regret am I in,only if I can turn d hand of d time.

You should not need feel like that.
My Dad has a place in ife he built over 20 years ago, It still serves us whenever we visit home. Though my grandfather has mansions there.
I can count the number of days I've spent inside that house in my lifetime to be less than 25days. But might be more useful in the future.

Assuming ur frm Nnewi bt lives in enugu city, since Enugu is the same igbo land as Nnewi, i think building a mansion for urself there is nt a bad idea even if u had only a bungalour in Nnewi.
I can only fault other places outside my teritory bt once its within,i cn even retire there if i like.

It all started during the Biafran War, when we igbos returned home but had no house at home as majority of us had only build houses in the cities where we lived before the war. Thereafter, we decided to build at home instead. Proudly igbo.

Demain_man: Most Igbo villages are under developed and they look like forest if you ever watch Nollywood movies. I really hate that look when i see them on those movies being an igbo myself.

My people, please build in the villages so as to bring these places up to the 21st century standard. Our generation unborn will thank us for it. while at it, proper maintenance culture on those properties are needed so that houses built can last a very long time. Regular painting, nice landscapping readily comes to mind.

For any Local Government Chairman/State Governor reading this, please embark on proper village/town planning so as to give our villages a modern organisation rather than allow the people to put up structures in an unorganised manner.

cementing everywhere and building highrise shouldn't be the way forward. We ought to strive for balance between nature and buildings....

black_beau: Because the image your people have of you is rated higher than what strangers think of you. @ least that's d Nigerian mentality. Secondly, building materials and land are way cheaper in the village

Not always true..

Land costs more in my town, that is if you are lucky to find one. Most of my folks are relocating to the neighbouring towns and beyond.A 50ft by 90ft piece of land was priced for N5m in 2011,the owner refused to sell..

Building materials are not cheaper either..chippings/granite gravels cost more in the main cities compared to mine same as reinforcement bars/rods cement, roofing materials etc.

I will put everything in my country home no matter how much i stay there in a yr.Thats where i relax, thats where i,ll retire, when im gone thats where i will be interred.

I can have properties all over the world but that one house i build in my home town will be my castle.

I am not reccommending high rise buildings or cementing everywhere. I will like to see nice buildings bungalow/story buildings in the villages blend with nature together with well planned road/paths layout graded at least to increase the beauty of the place and make it very welcoming to both natives and visitors!!

Its for a nice reason. The worth of a man appreciates the moment you discover the house he originates from(house in his hometown/village) is posh. However, its mostly found among the Igbos because of the civil war experience where their suppose fellow compariots tagged their legitimate, hard earned houses abandoned properties. Many till date are yet to be returned to the rightful owners. Do you expect the victims or anyone who knows these people personally to repeat thesame mistake. We are saying wise people should build POSH houses in their hometowns/villages first before er.ecting a house of its equivalent in towns/cities outside their regions atleast. There's no need hating.
FACT: At present, many Igbos have lost millions by underselling their magnificent houses located in the North East due to civil unrest there. Fashola is making many have a rethink with his demolitions without regard/appropriate compensation.
Once again, no more hating as home remains the best place to build mansions.

can be misplaced priority. heard of some living in a very bad area of NY while they have big mansion in their villages for the few moons christmas visit grin
why not enjoy a nice home everyday, instead of one in the village you hardly visit.

Please can you gracefully answer these questions for me sir;
1. What is the name of your village?
2. When last did you visit your village?
3. Do your dad or yourself have a small house where you can pass the night there?
4. Do you travel often for festivities to your village?
5. We do not have decent hotels in my town for me to lodge whenever I have reason to travel there. Do you please know of any real estate coy that provides adhoc/make-shift houses for hire in a matter of days?
6. Please can you remind me the true meaning of mismanagement and also confirm if it can also be applicable for an asset in the city?
7. Do you/or your dad have a house in the city or are you working towards completing one?

Why are you so bitter about how another person wants to spend his money? The same money some spend every year visiting foreign countries is what another used to build a house in one part of Nigeria and you turn around and call him a fool?
A colleague once told me how foolish I was in erecting a nice house in my place. But he was yet to complete his own in Lagos. I might even come back and build alongside with him there if I tarry in Lagos.

Please people should mind their business. Money is money, if you cannot insult the one that uses his own on parties, women,'janding', changing cars; then stop blaming the 'Aku lue unos'.
Thank you.

can you imagine? living in the ghetto in the city and having a mansion in the village - misplacement of priorities. i think africans especially nigerians are guilty of this because of their showmanship! they want to show villagers they have "arrived".

arrant nonsense!

i do not see the relevance of these questions to the topic of discussion. what has the name of my village gotta do with management or lack of management? how did most of you lots even complete secondary school education?

that you have completed your house means nothing - look at the intelligence of a graduate. is it about completion or who would get returns from his house if he decides to sell at anytime? you should take one or two courses in management!!! you have completed a house in the village - congratulations, you have done something similar to putting a man on the moon.

people should mind their business?
i can bet those are the exact words of the proponents of gay marriage. if we all mind our business the world would be chaotic. let's allow pröstitutes to roam freely then after all they use their bodies not yours. fathers who räpe their daughters should also be spared after all na him own pikin him räpe. now you see how your idea of live and let live sounds?

Abiriba people did well by building a village almost entirely full of modern houses and mansions. Whilst most rich Igbo people build big houses in their villages, the villages still represent the true Nigerian scenario where there is opulence amidst extreme poverty. Many of these houses(the ones built by those residing outside) remain empty most of the year.

Such houses are called country homes, most people get to that stage at some point in time, unless they have no roots that they know of.

the british did the same back in the day.

the major problem which i guess the op is having sleepless nights about, is the villages are sparsely populated, so why are people building houses there instead of in the cities.

POLICE CAP: I've observed that most persons prefer to build well furnished mansions in their villages which latter begins to look like an abandoned project because you only find people in them during festive periods. And the funny thing here is that most of these persons live in rented apartment in the city (where they spend most of their time)

In my own opinion, I would suggest they build just a simple house with simple furnishing in the village.... Then own even if its a hut to call their own in the city.

I stil wish for reasons why they do this.....
at the risk of sounding tribal, igbo people are the ones really into this practise of having a mansion at home and living in a rented apartment in town. Bini, esan, urhobo, Ijaw, itsekiri and igbo live mainly in edo/delta and I can say only the igbos does such. I've got so many friends who have filthy rich parents but only live in a rented apartment but the duplex at the village is something else, some even have a triplex-wonder if that word is correct. At the end of the day it is preference.

that's one thing that needs to be done in the villages- there's more opportunity for proper town planning, so this aspect should not be neglected.

A lot of people that are arguing here against building a good home in one's village tend to forget that those so called towns were once upon a time villages!

my case.
i work and earn a living in another mans land. retire and live a life i left in that mans land on my own land in my built mansion........ why ?.
1.old age they come, no need to pay huge amount of money transporting my dead body go home town again.
2. my children n grand and great grand children will not miss the city life whenever they come visiting.
3. its always a gain- gain situation.

these i learnt from my papa ......
word of wise for those still contemplating why should they build mansion in hometown.
ever wondered why big men are buried in their home town mansion?, its because tomorrow , you have a permanent resting place, thats sure and truely feels like HOME.

Please follow the link and see the picture of Finchingfield village in Essex not too far from where I live. If every village is developed in Nigeria, people will live there and not create problems for themselves.

Nice one, I also live in a village in Essex, it won ‘village of the year award’ a few years ago but has not been able to win one since then, so it is living on past glory.

@ Topic, it is typical, Nigerians and the culture of waste, instead of investment. The average Westerner starts with a one-bedroom apartment, moving up to a three or five-bedroom property as he partners up and has kids. When these kids move out/he gets older, he gradually downgrades, until he ends up in a retirement home.
As usual, you can trust with a Nigerian, it is all about excesses and quantity, instead of having a quality life.

Kanye’s rap take “white people get money don’t spend it, or maybe they get money buy a business, I rather buy 80 gold chains and go ignorant, I know Spike Lee gone kill me but let me finish. Blame it on the pigment …"
