Hardly. Most kids in Nigeria nowadays, mine included, express themselves freely.
Times have changed, most children go to private schools that are based on British/European or American standards, and they are taught using methods not very different from how children abroad are taught.

Plus, kids living in Nigeria are way more exposed these days. Thanks to DSTV that is priced as low as N3,000, kids have access to Disney, Cbeebies, and all these other foreign kiddie TV programs, the average lower-middle class kid in urban Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja, PH and some other urban state capitals) speaks British or American-accented English gleaned from watching TV, probably is unable to speak his or her local language, plays regularly with computers and tablets, goes to the movies, and so on. Not much different than an average lower-middle class kid anywhere in the West.

My son had to go to school in the US for a short period while his mother was there, a couple of years ago. He was generally adjudged to be the most outspoken and talkative kid in his class. I found that amusing, because Americans are talkative by nature.

As per the topic, it's about the parent's standards and how they choose to raise their kids. I know lots of badly-brought-up kids who have never left the shores of Naija, and I know lots of children with excellent manners that have never set foot on the African continent.

it depends on how they are trained.....
yes, they are encouraged to express themselves but it doesn't mean they would slap their parents or say rude things. it's what the parents allow them to say or watch. i have seen unruly kids in nigeria and i have seen polite ones abroad. it's what it is. parents should train their kids very well in a way that would make them proud of their children.

Having said that, that respect thing is very sentimental, while a girl trained in Nigeria knows how to do eye service and win the heart of the In-Laws, the UK one can be genuine and might not be great in kneeling down, reasons: maybe the only people she kneels down to are parents and there’s no uncle, aunty etc around compare to Nigeria where you have loads of them. The UK one will have to be told your aunty is coming next week remember to kneel when you see Her.

UK/USA etc trained Nigerian children are out-spoken, they will challenge you if you bullshit them, you can’t get away with the “respect your elders” when elder is doing something wrong.

There are 16 year olds UK children that already work and pay rents, mind you they are not poor, its not like when the parents are poor and you are forced to sell bananas on the street. I mean they have a sense of I need to work and make a living. I also know loads of well trained how to kneel down over 30 years old lazy Nigerians that still asks for constant hand outs from Daddy and Mummy.

In conclusion, UK trained children(I mean trained not leaving your children to be wayward) and Nigerian trained children (I mean trained again) are the same unless you get intimidated with their outspokenness and obviously prefer the ones that you can step on like a piece of rag.

Billyonaire: It can be vice-versa. Kids learn by induction. The immediate environment of the kid determines how he well kids turn out.

If I have my way, I prefer raising them here at home, but my Oga at the top says when the time comes, it must be Britain cos of what ever reasons, and I do not want to say one thing and she says another. Believe me, I fear the grammar that those kids will be speaking to me when they come on holiday. That alone, will be 'naughtier'.
