Excellent! JAMB for instance has done alot of damage to people's dreams & aspirations. I'm quite sure a large percentage of JAMB candidates rely on 'cheats' & 'leaked answers'.. while those who struggled day & night studying end up with low & average scores.. What a joke! I heard there was a time a 40year old policeman scored the highest with a score above 320. As if that was not enough, they introduced another garbage called Post UTME... in other to make students spend 10years seeking admission into the university, while their counterparts with cash graduates in foreign & private unis before the age of 20. No wonder, Nigerian students especially those in the states, federal institutions and Nigerian lecturers see "education" as a do or die affair, almighty stress and all that funny imaginations. This is the same reason they call private unis 'glorified secondary schools' Admission ought not to be difficult the way we view it in Nigeria, unfortunately, Nigerian students have been brainwashed such that they enjoy and encourage the difficulty. 7 Likes |

genxris: I think scrapping UTME will make addmission into tertiary institutions to become more difficult for the poor because the rich and highly connected will be considered first in offering admission and the exam fees for different schools will not be the same. Imagine where an applicant decides to write admision test of upto 4schools. The admission racketeers will be smiling and rubbing their palms at this. |

Well, scrapping NECO is a good one. Neco has been turned to something else by the northerners. As for the UTME, I think the new system would bring about corrupt practices in the admission system of institutions unless of course JAMB lives up to its responsibility but all the same, this is a welcome development. |

In addition to scrapping JAMB. WAEC should be encouraged to conduct an aptitude test for admission, which schools can decide to accept or reject based on the standards maintained by WAEC. There should be no law behind it, just like SAT in US. Some schools and applicant will definitely find it difficult conducting and sitting for exams for each school. It is also wasteful for each school to be conducting its own test. Such schools and applicants will likely accept scores from bi-monthly aptitude tests from WAEC conducted at Special specific designated and computerised centres. In as much as univ. keep getting blanket Govt. funding, and are not answerable to students choices, this move will be incomplete, as their is no check on the schools. Kudos GEJ. Next step. Stop funding Universities directly. Let them be funded by student fees, Rather use their quarterly subventions as research grants with specific achievement targets, and secondly to guarantee student loans from commercial banks in a Federal system as found in US. Thirdly, ensure NUC controls the enrolment capacity of schools based on their available infrastructure. We should also consider ways of de-emphasizing Bachelors. Most of what people do in work places required a 2 years certificate not four years. Why spend and train for capacity you will not utilize. Imagine an engineer 5 years as a cashier,. A Chemist or Biologist chasing people for account. All they needed is a diploma in marketing not the study of of quantum physics and Mitosis. Lets use our resources judiciously. Train fewer Bachelors, but train them very well to be creative. 6 Likes |

I thought NECO was established by an Act of the National Assembly. I believe the FG lacks powers to actually scrap it. I expect a court case over this issue. |

Absolute rubbish. Nigerians should concentrate more on equipping our indegineous examination body. Most West African countries have opted out from WAEC & Nigeria generates the highest income for WAEC. My own opinion is that WAEC should conduct only SSCE external exams only. 1 Like |

This is NOT really about NECO or JAMB or even Educatn per se, it is about d IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CRITICAL ORONSAYE REPORT (finali) and a very significant move to FURTHER cut d Cost of Governance, much more effectively as has bn done by dis Govt since 2010/2011... This is a very, very IMPORTANT move in deed, which shld not be just reducd to persons seeking/getting Admissn or not (even though that is also important) 1 Like |

As for me, JAMB shouldn't be scraped instead measures should be taken to make the purchase of forms cheaper. If JAMB be scraped, then admissions to tertiary institutions will be a case of "who know who" and students will even go the extra mile to bribe officials for the test questions in their school of choice. As for NECO, it should have been scrapped a long time ago because its just a replica of WAEC though its easier, students don't pass it |

1. Is NECO relevant? I don't think NECO is relevant when it merely duplicates WAEC exams. So why ask poor students to pay for both WAEC and NECO exams whereas if u make an F say in English in WAEC and pass it in NECO, the universities would stil demand for a complete result from either of the two bodies and not a merger of the two. NECO results would still remain valid till from the date the law is passed scrapping it and only from then will it be ilegal to conduct NECO exam. 2. Scrapping of UME/ UTME is proper. Why should a student be made to study hard to write a pre qualifying exam with all the expenses involved. The proposed method is very simple. If a student finishes o'level, she or he should approach the nearest university and pick up the admission form for the sch's exams. Its very simple. People say corruption in schools would deprive the poor, and I reply, has JAMB UME stopped corruption in admission process? Does JAMB offer admission to anyone even if d person scores 100% ? If Universities now lack men and women of intelligence, learning and integrity who will insist on merit in admission process, why blame politicians for all our woes. University post ume actually has helped to screen out those who benefitted from Jamb and waec wonder centres and scored 320 and above. During my school days, my classmates that came in with record breaking results from JAMB became those that were either withdrawn or hit the bottom level performance or constantly on probation due to poor academic performance. 4 NAPEP- the scrapping is long over due. Who as benefitted from this organisation other than people that import KEKE NAPEP (Marua) tricycle which is used for commercial farming in India, now dominating our roads in the name of poverty alleviation ! 5 Public Complaint Commission cannot exist when Human Right Commission is functioning. 9 Likes |

In my judgement, this is good step. But however every solution naturally also brings it's portion of problem(s). This one may likely bring the challenge of the highest bidder corruption, exam malpractice, increased cost of writing exams due to may choices (the many choices is not bad, so a candidate must make his/her choices considering his/her pocket), also large army of admission-ready candidates. The govt has taken a good step must we Nigerians knowing the benefits must make it work out for us in the face of it's attendant grays. Nigeria must need to increase the number of degree awarding institutions to absorb the plethoria of admission seekers there would be. God bless Nigeria. |

I think scrapping Jamb is a good move. That way, your choice of Universities is not limited. You can apply to as many universities as you want, significantly increasing your chances of admission. On the flip side, putting admissions in the hands of the schools could prove counterproductive where the university system is corrupt. However, i can't imagine all the universities would have corrupt systems so you can apply to other schools Let's just see how this pans out... 1 Like |
