Is a welcome development, but there should be agency that put a real fight to waec to ensure total commitment in their functions, if not waec will monopolize everything , as such neco should be allowed to remain as alternative means btw which one is NAPEP!! undecided

Monopoly is not an issue here. WAEC is not a private but a government agency albeit with some independence. What is required is oversight from the ministry of education, not competition from another agency.

eldoradoxx: Are you saying that the Universities are not better placed to set a high quality and standard exams for prospective students wishing to join the school ? Like I wrote earlier, when Prof Chinedu Nebo initiated post ume exam then in UNN which later spread like wildfire little did he know he was about exposing the ills in JAMB UME. I was in university before the post ume was introduced. What I observed from my class had been said earlier. Classmates whom UME awarded huge marks to make them get admission easily (First List or Merit List) were same people who couldn't cope with academic works. In my class alone between 100 to 500 level more than 100 of them were withdrawn from the faculty. When post ume came, people with Jamb score of 300 and above mere scoring lower than people with 200 and below! Why? Your guess is as good as mine. There are many rural communities in Nigeria that both Waec and Jamb exams don't really take place. From the supervisors to invigilators, everybody is compromised. It is pay as. Want to cheat. So scrapping of Jamb is long over due.
why not make prof nebo the head of jamb so dat he can sanitise the system? my inlaw lost admission cos of post ume corruption. at least salim in 1999 solved the cheating problem. make the system work, then improve on it. most of the universities see post ume as a money making venture. this move wud only make it worse.

D answer to ur question isn't far fetch.this is an illustration, there was once a lion bank in ds country and when diamond bank acquired it,all their staff and their customers automatically became Diamond bank staff and customers. If u'r holding a Neco result and Waec is in charge of Neco with this new policy,It simply means u have WAEC result,to scrap an organization to be overseen by another doesn't make d scrapped org. Lost its value.so relax.

You can't conduct exams in over a 120 towns and cities, and in tens of thousands of exam centres in just a staurday and expect massive cheatings not to happen in many centres. Look, like I said earlier, real exams only take place mostly in the capital city, take a trip to any centre outside the city and u ll weep. people write jamb exams in their homes, some hire people to write it for them and with that same result they get admission to study medicine, law, pharmacy (until post ume came). That is why the quality of undergraduates plummeted over the years.

I'm totally against this development. Some countries that are not as big as Nigeria have up to 8 different external exam bodies. They should have added another body but not scrapped NECO. Stopping JAMB from conducting exam will also greatly affect admission based on merit thereby has potential of making admission difficult for children from poor home. Admission will now go to the highest bidders.

Your excuse is a lame one. WAEC also conduct exams in rural areas, infact have more rural centers than JAMB. And also, WAEC's Mathematics and English take place on Saturdays with more centres than JAMB. Scrapping is not the solution because I believe that parents will start asking for it to be brought back.

some of you keep saying highest bidders. I thought highest bidders are the ones sending their children to Covenant, Babcock, Igbinedion, Ghana and the USA. Which highest bidders are you talking about again?

The right thing is for universities to conduct their exams themselves.

goldfish80: This effectively makes Neco certificate worthless. I pity Neco cert holders

Scrapping Utme is long overdue,Universities should conduct their various intake exams. Its simply cruel to kids getting to take two major exams to gain admission into tertiary institutions(when you add wace and Neco, makes it four). Welcome development!!!
That's not what it said NECO certs are still valid cos its only goin to be part of WAEC now

scrapping d utme is a gud development whch wil allow a good student in a good institution of his/choice. Bt d neco might b a disaster cuz passing through only waec will nt b easy for some ppl. It will realy improve d standard of education

genxris: I think scrapping UTME will make addmission into tertiary institutions to become more difficult for the poor because the rich and highly connected will be considered first in offering admission and the exam fees for different schools will not be the same. Imagine where an applicant decides to write admision test of upto 4schools.
I shld think that the FG wld make provision to control the cost of these examinations by the various schs. However, nepotism & favouritism may become more prevalent, giving rise to half-baked-graduated-children-of-the-rich-&-elite.
This development has it pro's & con's, but in my opinion the con's out-weighs the Pro's. It makes entering into tertiary institutions easier if u know ur way.
What this country needs is ά total over-haul... Starting frm cutting down the take home of government officers, and these money used to build industries and provide employment. What's is the need of graduating abt 50k yearly nd Ω̴̷̷̴̩̩̩̥̐͠☺ new jobs are been created?

[b]As a graduate of Elect/Eletct. Engineering, an Enterprenuer and a CEO of one of the Organisations Accredited by JAMB for Online UTME registration since it started, I talk authoritatively in support of this plan to scrap JAMB from the following facts:

1.) JAMB does not have enough personnels to undertake the task of conducting Exam for the huge no of candidates
ii.) JAMB does not have adequate facilities to undertake the task of conducting Exam for the huge no of candidates
iii.)It is impossible for JAMB to do a thorough supervision of Exams conducted at too many locations.
iv.) JAMB still hires corrupt Individuals (teachers, letcurers, etc) to conduct exams on its behalf
v.) (iv) above leads to malpractices that is almost becoming the norm in UTME
vi) Candidates do no longer read as they only make sure they go to Exam centres with enough money to give to supervisors
vii) As many as the number of Exam centres so is the no of standards or conditions under which students write exams.

JAMB-UTME is not just in any way effective and can never be effective in conducting credible exams for all nigerian students

The only way out is to scrap UTME and allow the Universities conduct their Entrance Examinations under a SINGLE supervisory agency or body such as JAMB.

I am very sure that when this is done, it will now be a matter of EGO for a Tertiary Institution to allow her Entrance Exam Questions leak. The particular school where instance(s) of leackage(s) is/are found should be brought to book by JAMB and other relevant agencies.

Benefits of scraping UTME

i.) Examinations will definitely be better monitored since exams takes place right there on the schools campuses
ii.) Examinations will definitely be better coordinated since each school will use their own staff to supervise
iii.) Schools can also choose whether to use Essay + Objectives OR the normal OBJ questions for their exams
iv.) Schools can now generate legitimate money from selling Entrance forms
v.) Candidates will be forced to be more serious with their studies
vi) Admission will be easier as a candidate can now write as many Entrance Exams as possible
vii.) Admissions will then be more "BY MERIT"
viii.) When the standard of Entrance Exams and Coordination are raised it will definitely tell on students attitudes in Secondary schools.
ix.) Also as an academician, most lecturers I know would ensure strict compliance in Exam halls during Entance Exams.
x.) This will ensure that the very serious students gain admission which will eventually produce BETTER QUALITY OF GRADUATES FROM OUR TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS.
