Nelit: Scrapping neco/utme is not the way forward,we need more tertiary institutions in this country! A lot of students pass waec/neco/utme and even the so-called post- utme yet they are unable to gain admission just because the number of students seeking admission is much more higher than the available institutions.
Just wondering if our government have problem with providing tertiary institutions just as much as we have secondary schools...

More tertiary institutions in which country!!! Bros abeg now. We have over 100 Universities, excluding the polytheniques, Colleges of Education and all the other ones. All our schools are struggling and you are talking about more schools? What is the essence of having more tertiary institutions with no facilities, adequate staff or even adequate space? That is the least of our problems in the Educational sector.

The problem with admissions is not inadeqaute schools, the problem is CORRUPTION, nepotism and Tribalism. I remember a friend of mine (may she RIP) applied to ABU Zaria two consecutive years to study medicine. she made more than the ABU cut off in JAMB and also passed post UME on both occassions with more than average scores. ABU didn't admit here because;

- She was not from Kaduna State or the catchment area. For those who don't know, ABU as good as it is (it is my alma mata by the way) will admit limitless numbers of students (in most cases on merit) from the catchment area in a department but will only admit one student each per state (from non-catchment areas after all the post UME bruhaha) in the same department. So now on the two occasions my friend applied, though her scores were far above the average/pass mark, she wasn't the highest from her state (as a non-catchment state).

This whole catchment area, non catchment area thing is not clearly spelt out unless you are told by reliable sources how these admission processes work. So you come to a class an you see for instance: 15 students from Kaduna state, 10 from Katsina, 5 from Benue, 7 from Kano, 8 from Sokoto etc and then you see I from Abia, 1 from Cross River, 1 from Ebonyi, 1 from Rivers etc.

It is a very tricky situation. So the least of our problems is the amount of tertiary institutions we have.

Uchesis:
Exactly my point.
WAEC shud not be d only means of obtaining O'level results. For example, i have a frnd in 2006 who couldnt pass WAEC but his NECO was gud enough 4 admission. Now 2day he is a B.sc holder, all thanks 2 NECO. So hw can u say dat his degree is invalid?

It dosen't make sense. NECO holders cant be asked 2 go back and write WAEC. Its rubbish
Already awarded degrees will never become invalid. WAEC will be taking over NECO, they will now be conducting two exams per year instead of one.
Re: FG Scraps NECO, NAPEP, Cancels UTME & Others by Delejumi(m): 7:11pm On Apr 03, 2013
Wow so fast, I myself have it in mind that if I become Nigeria president today, NECO will not exist again. This is good move not perfect one. It will be perfect if they cancel NECO.

Kai! yawa don gas ooo!

NECO Registrar na my Chairman! How I go feed when this happens?

Please God let this scrapping be GEJ's decision.
That way I will know that it will be reversed thereafter as in FIFA vs. GEJ, MAULAG vs. GEJ

Billyonaire: A recent survey done by me, indicates that most of the illiterates on Nairaland are products of NECO. When WAEC was the only examination council, great graduates with lexical prowess were offspring of the laudable WAEC. With NECO came 'sorting' and over-bloated admission statistics!

These days, everyone wants to 'pass through' university, and needless to say, the university will pass through them. In the end, these half-educated nematodes flood Nairaland, blaming GEJ for joblessness, joblessness not because there are no jobs, but because they are not qualified for such jobs. These days, Banks are forced to hire 'English & Literary Studies' graduates to work as accountants, because no one was patient enough to re-write WAEC, cos a cheaper alternative called NECO is round. GEJ has come to set things right. He, indeed is our ONLY political Messiah! Glory to Nigeria!!, Glory to GEJ!!!.....FRESH AIR!!!!

You must be d citadel of foolishness. It is pple lyk u dat retard our economy because u despise indigenous products. How many west african countries are stil conducting waec? NECO belongs 2 nigerians, just like our tertiary institutions. If u couldnt pass NECO during ur time, den dont wash ur dirty linens by posting rubbish here. So stop being a dumb_ass just lyk ur uncle GEJ.

gunuvi: GEJ is working. This is a welcome development.

what welcome development you are talking about, if person failed weac he must wait next year. but if he pass neco no need, there is advantage if one get 3 credits in weac and 2 credits in neco thats all, this is not a welcome development at all.

goldfish80: This effectively makes Neco certificate worthless. I pity Neco cert holders

Scrapping Utme is long overdue,Universities should conduct their various intake exams. Its simply cruel to kids getting to take two major exams to gain admission into tertiary institutions(when you add wace and Neco, makes it four). Welcome development!!!
So, u didd not read from the above that Waec will absorb her members and facilities?

I also hope the state governments can borrow a leaf by allowing pupils to take entrance exams to d secondary school of their choice. I do hope the Lagos State Govt show an example in this direction.

Let us try to forsee some challenges that the scraping of UTME will definitely bring. Many universities especially federal universities have to deal with large number of candidates when conducting their post-UTME exams. With the scraping of the UTME exam ( which obviously helps to reduce the number of persons that would have sat for the post-UTME ), universities may soon find themselves dealing with a mammoth crowd when it's time to conduct their entrance exams.
Re: FG Scraps NECO, NAPEP, Cancels UTME & Others by chiwuike20: 9:32pm On Apr 03, 2013
D multiplicity of choices of school 4 admission will cost a lot of waste, both material and human. Take 4 example, in a multiplicity system whr 20,000 thousand candidates chose law as their course of study and d outcome of d exam was relatively high due 2 d competition therein, seeing only 90 people admitted wit d ave score of 300. Out of dis 90 students, 80 succeeded in gain admission in other universities due 2 their brilliance. Wch eventually, only 30 resolved to remain with d sch. What will happen to d 50 slots remaining? Will jamb see to it dat candidates wit score a little lower than d ave cut-off mark get admitted? Or will d power of such action lie with d university? If d latter is true, it means dat d politicizing of admission into our tertiary institution will reach its cresendo, seeing d less privileged deprived of ever having an opportunity to acquire a sound education.

Nigeria is a country where policies are made first, before deep thought is been given to it later. inconsistencies in policy making has been the life style of our politicians,....too many questions are yet to be answered in this cases of NECO AND UTME,cert holder, .
1. what happens to Neco cert holder?
2. don't be surprised to see innocent students beeign rusticated for parading NECO,
3. UTME has not been experimented for upto 2 years, now it,s gona be scrapped..
4. Is this not a golden opportunity for university Dons to convert federal schools to private firm...
well, lets wait and see how it unfolds.

Another undercover neo liberal policy straight from the heartless department of misery in the university of world bank and IMF. People wonder why the yorubas instinctively hate obasanjo and yar adua. Now let me explain the implications to Nigerian who are foolish as usual.
This is the privatisation of education if you cannot see beyond your nose or if you think with your anus.
Giving the universities the power to determine who passed and who did not is the same thing as giving them the power to determine school fees. Let me explain further. These exams will be set in such a way that only a few people would pass . The rest(which is most) who have to pay their way through.in order words, your entry and continue stay in a top university would be determined by the size of your wallet .The barrier will be so high that you will even give up at the application stage. The children of the working class and poor are not invited.the fact that the government has been trying to jerk up tuition for a long time is another proof
UCAS is a clearing house for universities in the UK.however ,entrance into the top universities e.g Oxford and Cambridge is dominated by the children of the rich from a few secondary school .year in ,year out.this domination is not due to scholarship but in most cases, because they are the children of the rich and wealthy.
This is the antithesis of what chief obafemi awolowo fought against through out his life.heartless and socially useless leaders.

To me, this step is like putting a round peg in a square hole. D scrapping of NECO nd UTME will further inflict hardship on children of the average. Admission wil not b based on merit but on d "size of your wallet." Anyway let's keep our fingers crossed nd see as events unfold.

actually, it seems jamb started in the seventies, before then universities conducted their own admissions, much like its done overseas.

however, given the huge number of students seeking admission these days, this will likely turn out very tricky.
