Eaglets Resume Training

Golden Eaglets resume training at the Stade Municipal in Niamey on Sunday morning after an emphatic 3-1 win over Junior Chipolopolo of Zambia in the final Group A match in the 11th African Under-17 Champions currently going on in Niger.

With a semi final berth and a ticket to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Chile later this year secured, coach Emmanuel Amuneke has alerted his wards the importance of staying focussed.

"We have to thank God that he has helped us so far but we must continue to work hard until the journey is over," Coach Emmanuel Amuneke told the players.

"We have too more races to do; the semi final first and then we can begin to talk about the final but let us remain focused."

Sunday's training was light with plenty of fun and thrills. After loosening up; the players engaged in 'handball' and the whole exercise lasted about one hour.

"We want you to relax and sleep well in the days ahead. We thank God we have achieved "our main objective of coming here to qualify for the World Cup but the next game is the most important." Amuneke stated.

Eaglets battle South Africa in U17 semis

Nigeria's Golden Eaglets will tackle South Africa U17s on Wednesday for a place in the final of the CAF U17 Championship.

Nigeria, who top Group A will play South Africa, who finished runners-up in Group B, in the semifinal in Niamey on Wednesday after the South Africans beat Cameroon 3-1 in their last group match on Sunday.

The game, which was handled by Nigerian referee Ferdinard Udoh, Katlengo Mohammed scored the opener for South Africa in the third minute, before Nelson Maluleke doubled the lead in the 45th minute.

Cameroon came back into the game when Nguidjol Bayemi scored in the 50th minute to take the game to 2-1, but Nelson Maluleke scored his second of the evening in the 57th minute.

The second semifinal will see Guinea, runners-up in Group A with four points, take on Mali who ended as Group B winners following a 1-0 win over defending champions Cote d’Ivoire to end with seven points.

Amuneke Praises His U17 Players For WC Ticket

Golden Eaglets’ Head Coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has given thanks to God and commended his players for Nigeria’s ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals in Chile later in the year.

Speaking moments after Saturday’s convincing 3-1 defeat of Zambia, which ensured first-place finish for Nigeria in Group A, a semifinal berth and automatic ticket to Chile, Amuneke told Team Media Officer Morakinyo Abodunrin that his boys fought hard on the day.

Morakinyo: Can you describe your feelings tonight?

Amunike: I'm very happy and grateful to God. I'm grateful to the players because they fought so hard today. The condition of the pitch also enabled us to express ourselves much better but we are grateful to God that we have qualified for the semi final and also secured our ticket to the World Cup in Chile. We would enjoy the moment and focus on the next match but generally, I'm happy and grateful that we were able to achieve our objective.

Morakinyo: To whom are you dedicating this victory?

Amunike: How do I put this? This victory is for Nigerians especially those who believed in what we are doing from the first day. We played a very good side today (against Zambia) but we are grateful that the boys played to instructions, and they realized how important the match was. We continue to look ahead to our next game which is the semi-final and whichever team we are meeting; we have to look at those who have few knocks and see how we can have them back for our next game.

Morakinyo: Everybody has been talking about the quality of the three goals your boys scored against Zambia; what is your opinion about this?

Amunike: The first goal was beautiful; the second goal is what we call, in Spain, a spectacle; and you look at Victor's second goal which was also a spectacle.

Morakinyo: How will you ensure these boys don’t get carried away with this result?

We enjoyed the moment and the moment we got back to our hotel, it was finished. The boys themselves have realized what we have been telling them and they have realized that to achieve in life, you must be humble and disciplined. We will continue to talk to them because we are like fathers to them and we would continue to inspire them to build upon it. I don't really pay attention to one particular player but if everybody can function and we all can carry out our duties, every player is important to us.

Onyedinma Shower Praises On Eaglets Technical Crew

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board member and Nigeria Women's League (NWL) Chairman, Chief-Mrs. Dilichukwu Onyedinma has heap plaudits on the technical crew of the Golden Eaglets after watching them at close quarter at the on-going Niger 2015.

The NWL boss, Onyedinma praised the Emmanuel Amuneke led technical crew stating after the Golden Eaglets' impressive 3-1 victory over the Junior Chipolopolo of Zambia on Saturday that the technical crew deserves a huge pat on the back.

"I enjoyed myself, it was a fantastic match," Onyedinma said.

"These boys are promising and I really thank God for their lives, they are committed and very prayerful. I want to use this opportunity to thank the coach and his crew because this is the hardest part of coaching since they are bringing up these boys from the grassroots," said Onyedinma.

Onyedinma said all things being equal; the coaching crew at this level deserves better remuneration for their diligence in nurturing young talents to stardom.

"If I have my way, the technical crew here would earn more than any other national teams because this is the most difficult aspect. All the players you people groomed to win the World Cup in 2013 in Abu Dhabi have been taken away. I want to really commend you for a job well done." Onyedinma concluded.

Amadu: Eaglets Must Win U17 Championship

General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Musa Amadu has reiterated that the expectation for Nigeria’s U17 boy’s football team is to win the ongoing CAF U17 championship in Niger.

The Golden Eaglets will face South Africa’s Amajimbos on Wednesday in one of the semifinal matches, and Amadu reckons the Eaglets must beat their South African counterparts to stand any chance of lifting the trophy again.

“The expectation is for them to qualify for the final and that means the South Africans must be beaten and that is none negotiable.

“The ultimate target of course is for them to win the competition but they have to beat South Africa first to get to the final,” Amadu told sl10.ng.

Nigeria has won the competition twice before, in 2001 and 2007, and finished as runners-up twice, in 1995 and 2013.

And Amadu believes after coming so close the last time, now is the time to make it three wins in the competition.

“We came quite close the last time in 2013, but lost in the final to Cote d’ Ivoire but I think we can win it this time and I’m sure the boys know that and hopefully, it will come to pass.”

Amuneke Motivated To Play Amajimbos

Nigerians are still struggling with the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series where Bafana Bafana forced the Super Eagles to a 2-2 draw and left the AFCON champions at that time not to participate in Africa's prime football tournament.

Ideally the semi-final clash between the Golden Eaglets and Amajimbos at the Africa U17Championship looks more like a revenge for the Nigerians who aren't concerned about the level, but want to get a win over the young South Africans.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday'ssemi-final clash against the Amajimbos of South Africa, Golden Eaglets Head Coach Emmanuel Amuneke admitted in an interview with the Team Media Officer (TMO), Morakinyo Abodunrin, that it would be a keen contest but insisted his boys would grind another win and qualify for a consecutive African U-17 Championship Final Match.

Excerpts....

At some point during the preparation for this championship, you predicted that Nigeria would most likely meet South Africa, are you happy now that you are both meeting in the semi-finals?

We are okay and first, we are grateful to God that we are privileged to be in the semi-final. If you remember we were to play them in a friendly match in Kaduna but unfortunately, it did not take place. Now we are going to play them in the semi final and we are optimistic.

We have worked very hard to reach this stage and we just have to remain focused; and in the field of play, we have to do our job. Let us see how it goes but our dream is to win the semi-final (against South Africa) and proceed to the final. Like I kept on saying, only God knows because our journey is not in any man's hand but in the hands of the Lord.

As human beings, we only have to do our job and leave the rest to God to pilot the journey.

Nigeria has not lost to South Africa in a competitive match, how are you going to keep this record at the U-17 level?

We are not trying to keep any record but what we would be trying to do is to win our game (on Wednesday). But we should not forget that the South Africans are good, to be among the last four teams at this competition and would be representing the African continent at the World Cup (in Chile).

If you look at their game, you will know that it is a well-structured team regardless of the fact that they might not be scoring a lot of goals. It's a team that is well disciplined, and they are patient about what they are playing and they stick to their ideas and concepts. So, it is left to us to come up with an idea and formula to play them so that they would know that we are a very good side too.

This is a total different scenario and we are not interested in saying we have not lost to them or we have lost to them before. What is most important for us is that God's willing tomorrow; we are able to secure our journey to the final.

The South Africans are here for the first time, are you impressed with what they have been able to do here?

Yes, we must give both their coaches and players credit. I was privileged to watch two of their games; they were leading Cote d'Ivoire but unfortunately, the game ended 2-2 and in the other game, they were losing and they fought back to finish at 2-2. So it shows the depth and strength of the team; it's a team that likes to play; look for solution and they have some quality players particularly their top striker who can shield the ball very well.

But we have to find a way to contain them and make sure that in the middle, we struggle the up balls with them. If we can play our own game, it would become much easier for us and t is our hope that our boys would be in the right frame of mind and be able to carry out the task.

Before the game against Zambia, you identified a particular player who could give the Golden Eaglets lot of worries and you provided an antidote for him; have you also identified players in the South African team that could give your boys lot of worries?

They have about four or five players that are very good in that team; apart from the striker (Loph Willy Gohore) that can protect the ball very well; their strength is in the midfield with the captain (Nelson Malueke); No.5 (Athenkosi Dlala) who is very defensive but generally, they like to circulate the ball in the midfield. Against Zambia, we identified some players and our boys were able to listen and carried out our instructions. Likewise tomorrow(against South Africa); we would plan and play as a team.

What is the joker for South Africa?

My joker is for us to win (laughter)..

One of your key defenders, Lukman Halilu, has been ruled out of this encounter, is it going to have a reflection on the game and are you going to miss him?

Yes, if we have our way, we would have loved to have all our players' available going into this match. But we must be ready for all the inconveniences that the game brings. This is one of those inconveniences when one of our key players is not going to play the next game. Hopefully, we would find the solution and find other players who can also do the same job.

Have you gotten a replacement for him (Halilu)?

For the moment, we are evaluating and observing all the players; and after our last training today (Tuesday) we would look at the team deeply and be able to come out with a plan against South Africa.

This game is just hours away, what is your prediction?

I don't like to predict but I'm optimistic; or make noise about any game but I'm optimistic that we are going to win .But for us to win, we have to work very hard because hard work is the key to success. We have worked and pushed ourselves; we have gotten angry with ourselves and we would continue to inspire ourselves. Hopefully, God will lead us to what he has planned already planned for us

Amajimbos Humbles Golden Eaglets

A first half strike from Eric Mayo ensured that the Amajimbos of South Africa edged the Golden Eaglets 1-0 in the semi finals of the 11th African U17 Championship in Niamey.

Both sides went straight to the match with attacking intentions.

The Amajimbos of South Africa went straight away into attack and forced a save from goalkeeper Akpan Udoh in the first minute.

Nigeria launched an attack of theirs too. All action Suleiman Abdullahi hit a fierce shot in.

It was an end to stuff from the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria.

In the 11th minute, Victor Osimhen had a glorious chance for Nigeria. He was through on goal but was too slow to bury the ball at the back of the net.

Five minutes later, Osimhen again was the man behind the sweet move of Nigeria. His shot was saved by Mondli Mpoto.

Okonkwo beat the South African defence for pace but he met a mountain in Mpoto.

South Africa then silenced the Golden Eaglets four minutes before the half hour mark.

Mayo scored a well placed shot for the Amajimbos.

In the final five minutes of the first half, Kelechi Nwakali and Osimhen weren't able to beat Mpoto with their effort.

The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the Amajimbos.

After the break, Nigeria applied more urgency but Mpoto again denied them with his sharp reflex.

Mkatshana dribbled his way past the Nigerian defence. His weak effort couldn't beat the goalkeeper.

The confident South African side grew in confidence as the game went on.

With the Golden Eaglets needing inspiration, head coach of the team, Emmanuel Amunike decided to introduce the silky Christian Charles to add bite to the blunt attack.

Thirteen minutes to the end of the match in Niamey, Chukwueze Samuel who was through on goal missed a sitter.

Chukwueze had another chance to equalize. He decided to hit his shot against a South African defender after beating three players.

Golden Eaglets had a final opportunity to grab the leveller.

The hardworking Osimhen's bicycle kick was saved by Mpoto.

Mali and Guinea will meet in the other semi-final on Thursday.

Here is how they line-up:

Nigeria XI: A.Udoh, A. Saddam, A.Usman, M.Paul A. Bamidele, K. Nwakali, U. Anietie, S.Abdullahi, S.Chukwuze,O.Orji, V.Osimhen

NFF Heaps Praise On Eaglets

The Nigeria Football Federation have commended the U-17 National Team, Golden Eaglets, for earning a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals taking place in Chile later in the year.

NFF President, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, declared on Wednesday that semi final defeat to South Africa at the African U-17 Championship in Niger Republic has not diminished the value of the Eaglets’ accomplishment.

“Certainly, every Nigerian yearned for the Eaglets to win the African championship trophy in Niger after the boys reached the semi finals. They lost by a lone goal but we cannot accuse the players of lack of effort.

“The present NFF administration has continued to harp on the fact that it is not only concerned with winning trophies. We want to win trophies but more than that, we want to build a sustainable football culture.”

Pinnick assured that the boys will not be treated like outcasts following the failure to reach the Championship final.

“The NFF will send a jet to pick the players after the third place match on Sunday. The technical crew remains intact and the NFF will give support to them to plug the necessary holes in the team so that we will have a squad capable of doing the nation proud in Chile.”

The NFF President also noted that Cup holders Cote d’Ivoire were eliminated in the group phase of the championship in Niger.

The purpose of this tournament is to discover talents and give them exposure. Usually, only a few players from u17 would make it at full international level. A world class player at u17 might not reach the top. Freddy adu, sanni Emmanuel, etc. In Nigeria 99, Gabri was one of spain's best players but he was not as successful as Xavi and casillas. Ezeh might have a better career than Iheanacho. There are many uncertainties at youth level

Neymar and coutinho were in Nigeria, now they are superstars.

It is vital that manu's team do well at u20, otherwise many might disappear.

Amuneke Admits Amajimbos Superiority

After the champions of the FIFA U17 World Cup, Nigeria lost by a lone goal in the semi-final of the Africa U17 Championship to South Africa's U17, coaches of both sides have reacted according to result.

Nigerian coach, Emmanuel Amuneke. A former African footballer of the year is left astonished to see his wards to concede a cheap goal and not convert the numerous chances on target that came their way. He however admitted that the Amajimbos were a solid side.

"I don’t understand why we couldn’t score even one from the chances we created. Unfortunately we conceded a cheap goal and tried to equalize but that is how football can be at times, “said Amuneke after the match

"We lost as a team, to a South African side which is solid tactically and disciplined and we shouldn’t take that away from them, their coach and players. Maybe this defeat is a wake-up call for us to go back and regroup and look back our performance here and be ready for Chile," Amuneke concluded

South Africa coach, Molefi Petrus Ntseki was full of praises to God for the result his boys pulled against the world champions, Nigeria.

"Glory to God the Almighty for what we have done as we can only do so because of his blessings. We had so much respect for Nigeria because we saw them against Zambia and came into this match well prepared and ready to compete. I think the boys came in stronger, tactically focused and disciplined,"Ntseki stated.

"Yes, we beat the world champions but they are still good enough to go and try and defend their championship in Chile. Now it is time to celebrate our win and watch Mali and Guinea and be ready for the final," said Ntseki.

Mali to face South Africa in U17 final showdown

Mali secured their spot in the final of the U17 African Championship Niger 2015 with a 2-1 win over Guinea in Niamey on Thursday.

It is the second time Mali reach this stage of the continental tournament, having enjoyed a runners-up finish in the 1997 edition, but they are yet to lift the trophy.

The Eaglets had the better start to this semi-final at the General Seyni Kountché Stadium, creating the first chance of the game after 5 minutes of play to be denied by Guinea’s keeper Moussa Camara.

On the back foot right from kick-off, the Syli were then saved by the crossbar 5 minutes later while Camara made another crucial clearance in the 15th minute off a Mamadou Sangaré powerful strike.

However, Malian striker Seydou Koita put his side ahead in the 24th minute before coming very close from a brace in the dying minutes of the first half.

The Eaglets kept the pressure on their opponents after the break, and it took another good save from Moussa Camara in front of Aly Malle in the 46th minute to keep the Guineans in the game.

And the Syli even grabbed the equaliser in the 50th minute against the run of play, when Aboubacar Touré found the back of the net of Alou Traoré from a corner kick.

But it only took two more minutes to the Malians to double their tally, thanks to a superb free-kick from Aly Malle that left Moussa Camara totally speechless.

Mali will battle South Africa in the final on the same ground on Sunday (kick-off at 20h00 CAT), while Guinea will fight against Nigeria for a third-place finish from 17h00 CAT the same day.

All four sides will represent Africa at the U17 FIFA World Cup Chili 2015.

Obuh: To Much Pressure Didn’t Help Eaglets

Former Golden Eaglets coach, John Obuh believes ‘too much pressure’ may have played a role in Nigeria’s failure to get to the final of the 2015 Africa U17 championship after losing 1-0 to South Africa in the semi-final.

Obuh, who led Nigeria to a runners-up spot at the 2009 FIFA U17 World Cup says there is always intense pressure on Nigerian age-grade teams, and says such pressure may have been the down fall of the present U17 squad.

“I can’t blame them for not getting to the final,” Obuh told sl10.ng. “It’s always difficult because everybody expects you to just go there and win the tournament.

“Nobody is looking at other aspects of the game at this level, all they are concerned about is that you just go there and win.

“The U17 is not necessarily a must win, but to develop these players and expose them to international football.

“But when you put them under too much pressure and it gets to them and sometimes it affects them,” Obuh said.

The former Flying Eagles coach adds that the present U17 team is good, but advises that they should be fortified before the World Cup.

“I think they are have some good players and I think they are a good team, but they need to reinforce and fortify before the World Cup.”

Eaglets Set To Be Overhauled For World Cup

The bulk of the present Golden Eaglets team that qualified Nigeria to the Chile 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup, may miss out on making the World Cup, sl10.ng have gathered.

Nigeria lost 0-1 to the Amajimbos of South Africa in the semifinal, meaning they will not be making it a third win at the CAF U17 championship. And even though the Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that the team’s coaches will remain, it seems a large chunk of the players won’t.

Sources at the Glass House have informed sl10.ng that the technical department/committee of the NFF have recommended for ‘new and better’ players to be scouted before the World Cup.

The Nigerian U17’s have shown glimpses of brilliance, but looks a bit short of the quality of the class of 2013, which the NFF, it is understood, wants to use as a benchmark.

And as a result, they may instruct the coaches to conduct a ‘mini-screening’ exercise before the World Cup in Chile.

“The NFF are okay with the fact that the team qualified for the World Cup, which we feel is more important, but there are concerns that the best players may not have been chosen for the tournament,” a source at the Glass House squealed.

“The coaches will remain for sure, but we want them to scout for new and better players before the World Cup. We would encourage them to conduct a mini-screening exercise so better players can be chosen.

“Everybody appreciates what the last U17 did and that is the benchmark we want to set for ourselves,” the highly placed source informed.

Guinea Beat Eaglets To Win Bronze

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria finished fourth at the 2015 AYC after losing 3-1 to the Syli Babes of Guinea in a 3rd/4th place playoff match at the Stade Général S. K.

Goals from Aboubacar Toure and Abdoulaye Keita in the space of five minutes gave the Syli Babes a 2-1 lead over the Golden Eaglets at half-time.

The game was off to a predictably fast start, with both sides looking to win the third place match at the Stade Général S. K.

After a couple of tame efforts, however, Eaglets had the lead twenty eight minutes into the game, when Victor Osimhen bundled in a superb team effort.

Nigeria should have increased their lead not long after, when Abdullahi Suleiman was given far too much room and his header was saved by goalkeeper Moussa Camara.

Immediately after Suleiman forced the goalkeeper to the save, Nigeria looked distinctly second-best, struggling to craft any moves and surrendering possession to Guinea as soon as they did get the ball.

Guinea did find their equaliser. Aboubacar netted an absolute beauty into the far corner and over Akpan Udoh, stunning the Nigerian fans into silence.

Just as Guinea's goal appeared to deflate Nigeria, the Syli Babes were in the lead Keita's fantastic effort ends with an amazing goal.

Nigeria were probably looking the more likely team to level as half-time drew closer, but the Guineans held on.

After the break, Abdullahi wasn't effective with his set-pieces as Eaglets struggled to create any clear-cut chances.

With thirty-one minutes left to play Guinea made another breakthrough as Keita powered in his second goal of the day.

Guinea were almost making it 4-1, but it took the bravery of Udoh to deny Alseny Soumah from scoring.

The clueless Nigerian side lacked the energy to take the game to their opponents and couldn't shrug off the disappointments of crashing out to South Africa in the semi final on Wednesday.

Eaglets Starting XI: Akpan Udoh, Lazarus John, Abbass Usman, Abdullahi Suleiman, Orji Okwonkwo, Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Nwakali, Maxwell Paul, Uko Anietie, Zakari Lukman, Chukwueze Samuel

I agree

With our population and passion for football, we can get outstanding players for each position with proper scouting.

I can count just a few outstanding players in Amunike's team or is it his tactics?

If they played super six, they would have been thoroughly exposed.

Friendly matches against tougher oppositions is needed for this team to grow. It would be easier to point out their weaknesses if they play tougher sides. This will also help the team grow.

The thing with u17 is that the coach must also be a scout. A good coach might not be a good scout. Manu Garba is a good scout, we can see it even from the additions to the u20 team, Nwobodo, omego etc.

Many countries do not change their u17 coaches for years. That is to ensure that the talents keep getting discovered. Spain, Mexico
